I want to know where was security. Don't they hire security for these events? Ugh!

As many as a dozen people may have witnessed the brutal gang rape and beating of a 15-year-old girl after her homecoming dance — and the attack may have been caught on cell phone video, police said.

Two suspects were in custody late Monday, but police said as many as five other men attacked the girl over a two-hour period Friday night outside Richmond High School.

"She was raped, beaten, robbed and dehumanized by several suspects who were obviously OK enough with it to behave that way in each other's presence," Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan said. "What makes it even more disturbing is the presence of others. People came by, saw what was happening and failed to report it."

The victim remained hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Manuel Ortega, 19, was arrested at the scene and was being held on $800,000 bail for investigation of rape and robbery. He is not a student at the school. Richmond police Sgt. David Harris said he did not know if Ortega had an attorney.

A 15-year-old student also was booked late Monday on one count of sexual assault, Gagan said.

Police are appalled by the horrific nature of the attack.

“I remember thinking that it's like something out of a Hollywood movie,” said Gagan. “It's so extremely vicious and absolutely unnecessary.”

The victim left the high school homecoming dance about 9:30 p.m. Friday and was heading to meet her father for a ride home when a classmate she knows invited her to join a group drinking in the courtyard.

Shortly afterwards, police said, the 15-year-old girl was robbed, beaten and gang-raped for more than two hours. Police theorize the attack was not only watched by up to 12 others but may have been videotaped with cell phone cameras, according to KTVU.com.

The victim had consumed a large amount of alcohol by the time the assault began, police said. Officers came to the scene after getting a call about a possible attack on the high school's campus. They found the teen semi-conscious near a picnic table.

Marin Trujillo, a spokesman for the West Contra Costa Unified School District, said there were four police officers and three school administrators monitoring the dance, but the assault happened away from the gym

This is terrible and heartbreaking and I for one would like for every single person at the scene to be charged as an accessory. Just horrible.

Put them in jail and spread the word as to how they got there. Shouldn't be a problem.

Sadly there are not enough security or police to be everywhere there is crime happening.

There is something essentially wrong with the characters of those who would do this and equally wrong with the character of anyone that would witness this without doing something to help if nothing else to seek help.

Scum...

How does a mind twist so to willfully be so inhumane?

Thank goodness for the caller.

Apparently no one called police until word of the ongoing rape spread to a house party in the city's North and East neighborhood, where an appalled partygoer felt obligated to phone in the rumor.

Officers broke it up, and found Advertisement the victim semiconscious and obviously hurt. Paramedics flew her to a regional trauma center in critical condition; she is expected to survive.

Manuel Ortega 19, arrested.

During Friday's Richmond High School gang rape that now, according to new reports, lasted somewhere around two hours, only two suspects have been arrested so far. Manuel Ortega, 19, was arrested at the scene. He is being held on $800,000 bail at a Contra Costa County jail.

According to CBS 5 sources, "two campus security guards who would have typically patrolled the area where the attack occurred were sent home as of 9 p.m. on dance night because the school district didn't want to incur overtime."

Put them in jail and spread the word as to how they got there. Shouldn't be a problem.Max penalty for forcible rape is 8 years prison. Add on enhancemetns for serious or great bodily injury, possible conspiracy, and the years can add up. Some of the suspects might have prior strikes which doubles their punishment or makes them eligible for life.

So I guess if a hetero man beats up, robs and rapes a gay man it's not a hate crime because being a gay man is an element of the offense of same gender rape..

I got it now....

The guys who participated in the gang rape should be locked up for life. Anyone who could do this once will most likely do it again. Our laws are way to easy on crimes llike this.

The ones who watched it, some of whom set out texts and photos of the incident, should be prosecuted too. They helped the rapists carry out this cime. What kind of animals stand around and watch some woman beat and raped almost to death?

Yeah, let's not 'incur overtime' during a homecoming dance?

Drinking on campus and a two hour gang rape and no one noticed?

Dear God. :(

Further lunge into barbarity and social degeneracy.

Anyone remember that phrase, 'social degeneracy'?

It was once a useful phrase but now considered quaint and perhaps judgemental.

We need to be more judgemental else the animals run down the weak.

Yeah, young women get gang raped all the time in our country as it is apparently a practice for a great number of gangs to allow women in only after submitting themselves to a gang rape.

But fantasizing about shark tanks will really change things real quick.

Gang Rape Victim Is Church-Going Honor Student

The victim of last weekend's brutal gang rape at her homecoming dance was a devout Christian who attended church three times a week and whose friends say had been looking forward to the homecoming dance for weeks.

Kami Baker, one of the victim's close friends, said the girl came to the dance Saturday evening clad in a sparkling purple gown, diamond necklace and matching silver shoes.

"She was perfectly sober at the dance," said Baker, who saw the victim just 15 minutes before she left the dance. "She was bubbly, and kept saying how happy she was to be at the dance."

Baker,a junior at Richmond High, lambasted school officials for doing little to break up a large group of men lingering near the gym where the dance was being held.

"I looked outside of the gym and I saw 12 to 15 guys, sitting there, with no [school] IDs," Baker angrily told a school meeting, according to CNN. "The officers, not only did they not check the IDs of those students or men sitting outside of our campus, but the security officers who are employed here did no checking either."

Five people have been arrested and so far. Four of the five suspects in police custody were charged by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office and if convicted, could spend the rest of their lives in prison.

Manuel Ortega, a 19-year-old former Richmond High School student, is charged with robbery, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, rape in concert [gang rape] and rape with violence, according to Gagan. The DA's office is likely to ask for a life sentence of Ortega, whose bail has been set at $1.2 million.

Three other suspects charged in connection to the attack are juveniles, ages 15, 16 and 17, but are to be charged as adults, and the DA's office will seek life sentences for the trio, Gagan said.

Given the number and nature of the way witnesses watched the rape take place, experts said, prosecutors may have a wider window than normal to charge onlookers as accessories to the crime.

"If you were on the scene and encouraging — or urging the suspect – you can be held responsible... Recording a crime is different from just watching it. Recording it can be a form of urging if the suspect feels like he's expected to perform."

Personally, I would like for the information about all of the families of the perps to be dug up, and made public. I would like the filth that permeates these families made public. Endlessly shame the families of these perps in the newspapers. Drag out all of their filth for the world to see.

So what if she was a devout christian? It makes her no more a victim nor any less a victim. It doesn't make the crime against her any better or worse. And there is nothing to say that the crime was committed because of her religion.

I've never liked hate crime laws because it implies that some victims are more important than others.

As to dragging the families into this - what lunatic thinking is that. You've got no proof that the families are culpable. Bad kids do sometimes happen to good families.

I'm also sadly not shocked to see that some are trying already to turn this into an illegal immigrant issue (without any kind of evidence to say it is one) as if a white person has never committed a rape before.

Then, they'll be no "dirt" to "dig up" for those "good" families....

Only the dirt on the "bad" families .... that produce Christian Hating Rapists... :)

There you go again trying to imply that this was because she was christian. That is a completely and utterly irrelevant issue. This would be a horrible crime if the girl was the school slut who smoked meth. The victim's background doesn't make the attackers any more or any less animals and any more or any less deserving of a harsh punishment.

Agreed, but we should learn more before passing judgement. After all, there was a time when everyone knew that Kitty Genovese's murder was witnessed by dozens who did nothing to help. On closer examination, it appears to not be true.

One just wonders if we've heard the whole story here.

I for one would like to know what the father did when he arrived to pick her up and she wasn't there? Wouldn't most parents go inside to ask about her? I also don't see how a 15 yro girl would willingly go off w/ a group of boys/men...especially thug looking males!

She probably knew some of the boys. And "thug looking" is an eye of the beholder type thing. Lastly it wouldn't shock me in the slightest to find out she was going out to drink alcohol or smoke weed with them. Every victim suddenly becomes a little angel according to the family but in reality you often find that their own actions contributed to the dangerous situation they end up in. Don't mistake my words, she didn't deserve to be raped and those that raped her are animals but odds are that had she made better choices that night the rape wouldn't have happened.

The victim's "better choices" that could have been made will hardly be under the microscope, as will be the better choices the school officials and security officers at the dance could have made.

I want to know ALL about the Family background of of teen gang rapists.

Yeah, I'd like to know.

But, do any "news" organizations have the will to do that.... ??
