Aside from iTunes.

I used to use FrostWire but I'm looking to see if there's a better site that has less viruses someone might recommend. A site that's preferably cost-effective to a homeless person.

Amazon. DRM-Free and great deals. They even offer free "sampler" albums. The problem is finding a sampler that caters to your taste in music, but they have samplers for almost every genre of music.

Amazon. And stay away from WalMart.

Most of my stuff comes from Amazon and I-Tunes. I sometimes peruse the "free" sites if I'm looking for something that's no longer in print or for legal bootlegs.

Which has always raised the question - can you really "steal" something that's no longer available for legitimate purchase.

I didn't even know Amazon offered free downloads.

I'll have to give that a try!

Also, if you've got favorite bands, pay attention to their websites as they will often offer free downloads of individual songs from time to time - particularly new releases.

It's for selective offerings only. Mostly its a record-label sampler. I'm pretty sure that their search engine allows you to look up free samplers separate from the rest.

i have a number of sites that i get bootlegs from... nto sure i can mention them here.......

official releases, i will go to a music store like best buy to try and buy, if they dont have, i will order it, but i like to have the CD instead of a download......

but i prefer live music, cant stand most studio releases by groups since most are over produced.......

so i will buy the cd to support the group, but i ususally dont even open the cd, i look for live bootlegs of the songs........

hmm well i "try out" certain music sometimes by downloading it through a particular site
I don't want to actually give out the name..
Let's just say it's a body of water where pirates enjoy hanging out :)

If it's something i really like i usually support the artist and get it through Itunes.

I have heard that people download MP3's from USENET newsgroups often.

I have had several problems with iTunes DRM. They've now started lifting the DRM, but every 6 months (without fail), one of my older songs will refuse to play because my computer is not "authorized" and I have to burn another "computer authorization" license to play the rest of my tracks (and my ipod is subsequently formatted because iTunes believes it is syncing with another computer and that I am a pirate). I've called apple support many times to clear this up, and the best they can do is remove some of my previous computer authorizations (which, by the way, are from the same computer).

I avoid the hassle now by getting my mp3's from Amazon!

What if it wasn't made available for purchase? I mean, I've wanted to get some songs from NFL Primetime on my ipod, but I couldnt find them on itunes.

Never had a problem with the DRM, plus when you have an iphone, and your laptop is a Mac, it makes things easier.

That's the thing. If you are fully Apple committed, it works.
For the rest of the computing public, iStuff is toxic.

My wife and daughter are more the music people than I am, however they have used iTunes on a couple of different Windows machines for a couple of years now and we've never really had an issue.

I think this is what they do...

Most of the songs are imports from our CD archive, but they will periodically buy songs also.

However what they do is assign all new downloads to a "To Burn" playlist and when they get enough songs they will burn them to a CD in MP3 format stripping out the DRM. Then re-import the songs into iTunes for management purposes.

If you download enough from them, they start sending you email ads telling you what they have for free for you based on your download history.

I get about five tv shows a month free.

Ya, that's DRM.

Manufacturers of digital content (music, books, movies, etc...) have an inherent right to protect their intellectual property to ensure they receive just compensation for it's distribution. On the other hand their is something known as "fair use" which says you as the purchaser of material have the right to make a "backup" copy of the material for personal use. So through DRM manufacturers try to stop you from making copies for mass distribution (or sale). That's why with the iTunes music downloads they have only a limited number of devices a song can be transfered to. You can have a copy on your desktop, iPod, and laptop - but it is illegal for you to make 10,000 copies to distribute to your friends.

Currently, if you purchase a DRM embedded song from iTunes and burn it to CD as an MP3 file the DRM information is stripped.

Doesn't it also strip if you make a standard CD disk (cda format)?

Oh, okay, thanks.:) I own about 45 years worth of CD's, cassettes, 8-tracks, and albums, and am not too interested in any new stuff, except I do have a great fondness for artists that are "unknowns". That was the great thing about the old Napster years ago; you could get some great music from people who didn't even have a label, just independent people with no ties to any company. I wish there was a way to connect with the independents again.:(

I'm sure they are out there. I just don't know how to search for them. It's all I can do to find old radio shows for download (at least the OTR shows that can still be understood). Just go to Google, and try different combinations, and you might be lucky enough to stumble on something.

I think so, but I think my wife said she can record at a higher sampling rate (better recording) with MP3's.

But really I'm not sure on that point.

Buy all music through ebay (saving at least $1 is worth it). New and unopened... Then I usually download the album using "certain websites". That's only with music I like. If I just want to try something I use one of those "certain" sites" and if I like, I buy the album over ebay.

Sounds strange but I love collecting all kinds of unopened things. A certain game I wanted went for $200 completely new and unopened, didn't have the money so I couldn't bid :( but it's a rare game to begin with so even opened it goes for about $75. And! it's only around 15 years old.

Go buy a new Buell motorcycle in the crate and stash it. You are certain to have a good investment.
