Saw it with my wife and son this afternoon. Has to be the worst movie I've ever seen in a theater. Although it's billed as a movie adaptation of a children's book, there really is no childhood left in the rotting corpse that is this film.
It's more of an dark marriage of kafkaesque and freudian angst unleashed under the title of a well known and loved children's book that leaves you wondering what the heck kind of childhood the director "Spike Jonze" (aka Adam Spiegel) actually had.
Perhaps he's spent too much time looking into its mirror to actually write something worthy of watching. I spent $18 on tickets, I wouldn't have wasted an hour and a half on it if someone had paid me $18.

I wasn't much of a fan of the book. So I'm not planning to see the movie.

Just from watching the trailer I could tell it was going to suck.

really? I really liked the trailer and have been waiting for this for months. ALot of buzz around it though has seemed like people will love it or hate it. No shortage of speculators that said it had a high probability of suck factor due to the fact that the book is really short. I'll still see it but I'll wait for the dvd I guess.

I disagree. We saw it Saturday. My wife and I liked it. The kids didn't. The thing is, it's not a kids movie, its a movie for adults. I thought it was a great adaptation, because the book, too, was very melancholy. The soundtrack was awesome.

My wife and I agree, but the kids didn't like it.
It was never a happy book, so the movie fits.

Gotta be honest...ever since I saw that they were making a movie based on this book I have wondered how they were going to make a 20 page book into a 2 hour plus movie.....

As long as we're being honest, some of the creatures looked like they had
spray painted old Barney the Dinosaur costumes and added some potatoes
for facial features.

Yeah, really. I don't mind the the book. I read it to my DD almost every night. It was among her favorites along with Goodnight Moon and 10 Wishing Stars. Watching the trailer did nothing for me and didn't seem like it would appeal to me. I think it's one of those movies some people are going to like and others will hate.
YMMV
