Okay, i'm looking for a DVD recorder, like those huge ones you have in your entertainment center, but very compact that can burn live video to the Disc as its being captured with the camera. Using one of those cameras that uses mini discs is out of the question.

I found a recorder from Sony but it didn't work how we wanted it to. You had to record the video while watching their tiny screen, not the 12" flat screen I have mounted in a case.

Here is the one that didn't work:

Sony recorder LINK (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SML2BQ/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0000AINEO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0E8Y57W96W3HE0S4EGQE)

Believe it or not, even as I work towards a degree in computer science, i'm the biggest newbie when it comes to home electronics.

Anyone know of anything similar?

I'm trying to figure out your overall goal here.

There are camcorders that record directly to dvd and can output to a tv/monitor while they're doing it. (Routinely done with camera cranes)

It sounds like you already have a camera though, but want to see the video on a larger screen while recording. Any off the shelf dvr or dvd recorder (they come in various sizes) should be able to handle this (assuming your camera does have a video out). If you're doing this for editing purposes though, a capture card in a computer might serve you better.

All that being said, it sounds like you might want to put this device in the case with the lcd. At 12", your options are fairly limited. I believe Liteon had one of the smallest dvd recorders in the DD-A100GX, but it has been discontinued.

Another option (although expensive) might be to build a computer based around a mini-itx motherboard (very small), here's a guide: http://www.crn.com/white-box/200000477;jsessionid=1ZEDBRVBZIQU3QE1GHPCKH4ATMY32 JVN

Thanks for the advice. You sort of hit the nail on the head. I'm just looking for a standard old dvd recorder that is pretty small (8 inches wide at most, I think).
