Really not trying to stir any pots here

Breast Cancer Awareness Month generates a lot of publicity. NFL players are wearing pink shoes and wrist bands. Pink banners hang from the goal posts. Even baseball players used pink bats. Pink ribbons are everywhere.

But

Why isn't Prostate Cancer Awareness Month afforded any publicity (apparently it was September). Did the LPGA do anything?

Are men
Embarrassed?
Uninformed?
Apathetic?
Unorganized?

I think far more people understand breasts and their purpose (back off guys) and the effects of cancer. I doubt many understand the same for the prostate which indicates to me that PC needs far more awareness than BC. Is it just not a 'sexy' to be aware of 'that thing in a man's nether regions"?

Just some thoughts (as my BIL was just diagnosed with PC). Is it even possible to get men organized enough to pursue this? Honestly, do you even KNOW what a prostate does?

Apathetic and somewhat annoyed by all the pink crap at the football games.

Let's just stick with women on this one and save the political correctness angle for later. Is breast cancer any more important or frightening a disease that cervical or ovarian cancer?

I think I'm plenty aware of it, thanks.

I actually think he has a point and I've never really thought of it that way before. Op you should re-title this thread. Most ppl probably won't click on it since it reads like a 'reminder'.

Women have always been better at getting things started such as support groups. I guarantee all this ''awareness' was birthed out of some type of support group. I also think more women are lost to bc than men lost to pc. Both are equally sad. Maybe some men can get together and create their own 'awareness' month.

Personally, as a woman, I cannot stand all the PINK stuff everywhere.

Breast cancer isn't exclusive to women, and to think, a man might have a lump and has to feel PINK by asking his doctor about it.

As for prostate cancer, more is advertised about ED than prostate cancer.

But all this is changing, isn't it?

According to what Rush was talking about yesterday, early detection of cancer is being redefined as being more harmful than helpful...that some cancers might, actually, go away by themselves.

All the early screening tests are being looked at as wasteful.

As Rush said, this might be a coincidence, but it is great timing for the new cheap version of Healthcare that is rolling out to take care of all of us who may want to have a lump checked or a problem checked. Nope. Can't do early cancer screening--it's now been redefined as not needed.

I really think all of this needs to stop. You have people who have cancers like pancreatic, glioblastoma's and ovarian cancer, these have much higher mortality rates, so how do family members feel that their loved ones cancers are basically ignored? where are the teal, gray and purple shoes and bats representing those cancers?

Totally agree with the OP on this one. Prostate cancer is just as serious as Breast Cancer, bus is not exploited like the other.

The main diff is that men can greatly reduce our risks of prostate cancer by doing certain things ;)

How 'bout we just dispense with the awareness month pretense in all cases, as PC run amok?

This guy is doing more than pink ribbons and bracelets.

In all seriousness, a close friend of my wife and I went through it. She beat it, but only after a double mastectomy. It's not a laughing matter. Awareness...well, that's a personal choice. There are very deadly cancers out there that attack regardless of gender and they're all pretty devastating. I don't like singling out issues like this. Maybe it could be simply "cancer awareness month".

What about Virgo, Scorpio, Libra, and Capricorn?

All Cancer Awareness Month WOULD be a lot better although I think a lot would oppose not having a specific Breast Cancer Month.

Not only does my BIL have prostate cancer, my mother was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer so my cancer awareness has certainly gone up.

There is a gal at work who smokes and I want to just smack her. To her, and I'm sure many smokers, cancer is just a disease, and "everyone has to die sometime" attitude reigns. But it is so devastating and heart wrenching that a month of driving it home may do some good. Let them hear about final months testimonials on what cancer really is.

I am sorry to hear about your mom and BIL, it has to be a tough time in your family right now. I would encourage them to only hang with positive people. Many are unaware of not only the power of prayer but the power of having a positive attitude. It can be detrimental to the healing process. I will say a prayer for them. You stay strong.

I was at the oncologist with my mother today and there were pink ribbons, relay for life, raffle baskets and special tee shirts for the staff. If I'd been there last month, I doubt there was anything for prostate cancer and when I go next month there will be anything for any other type.

Guys - lets sing together

Apathy Apathy, that's our cry
A-P-A - ahh **** it

I, too, think all the pink is way overdone. Even where I work the office is festooned with pink ribbons, pink this and pink that and everybody (except me) ordered pink T-shirts to wear on the next 2 Fridays. It's just too much.

And yes, ALL cancers should be mentioned, not just breast cancer.

Unless Google is lying to me, September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Theories on why there aren't baby blue wristbands and shoes not related to Chargers' throwback unis?

-- All the guys are watching football anyway. There's no new audience to mine by highlighting their middle-aged health issues.

-- A blunt-skulled PR guy pitched this to the NFL: "Men like boobs. Breast cancer is a threat to boobs. Therefore, breast cancer awareness will motivate men to tell their wives/girlfriends how to protect their boobs from cancer."

-- Another PR man's pitch to the NFL was cut short when he started out saying: "I see a commercial with Steeler's Head Coach Mike Tomlin leaning over a table at the doctor's office, legs straddled. Then, a doctor dressed in a white hat and a black and white striped shirt standing behind him snaps a latex glove onto his hand. The voiceover says, 'Get your prostate checked, because NFL coaches shouldn't be the only ones who take it in the --'"
