This is the third day I've seen articles about a "pumpkin shortage" this year.

All I can say is, Ohio is drowning in pumpkins.

I've seen them in the store since last month and a lot of them aren't even sold yet. Bins of pumpkins at Walmart, Sams Club, Kroger, Marcs. And that doesn't include the church yard and boyscouts sales I've seen. No one is even buying yet. They don't buy until closer to trick or treat.

If Washington DC needs pumpkins, come to Ohio. We have plenty.

Lots-o-jack-o-lanterns to be found up here in wisconsin too. Of course when they are charging 3 bucks for a 9 inch diameter one, and more for bigger ones, you don't tend to sell as many.

Useless trivia: Former guitarist for the band, Faith No More, Jim Martin is the record holder for having grown the 235th largest pumpkin ever, at 1,064 lbs.

Pumpkin shortage thread in WP...

Was this pumpkin shortage inherited from the previous administration?

Is there emergency Pumpkin Recovery Act legislation winding its way through Congress?

Is the President apologizing to European nations for America's prior Pumpkin arrogance?

That's a biggie.

I don't even want to think about the size of the pumpkin that would be grown if Congress was in charge of Pumpkins...

I don't know what the farmers around here (Spokane/eastern WA) are saying but any pumpkins left out in the fields last week are likely toast with several days of 16- 20 degree weather. I looked at a local fruit stand today and the pumpkins sitting outside were looking like they had melted.

I haven't noticed there being less pumpkins this year. I've noticed them being about $2.00 more than last year though. I am waiting to see if the price comes down before halloween to decide whether to get one or not.

I got one at Sam's Club (and it's huge) and I paid eight dollars for it.

I didn't think that was overpriced because it was so big.

Then I went to Marcs (which is our locally, Ohio owned, supermarket). Same size pumpkins, $2.99.

I was so ****ed. I got thoroughly ripped off by Sams Club.

A lot of the pumpkins I've seen at Wal-Mart and the local groceries had their price go up about $2.00 from last year. A lot of them are also bigger than I'd like to use for my pumpkin carving as well, so I may/may not be carving pumpkins this year....not like I have time anyway really. Since my actual cleaning and carving takes about 2 hours.

Big, good carving pumpkins at Acme Supermarkets in NE Ohio for $2.99.

A little early to start carving but that's pretty cheap.

I carve mine the day of Trick or Treat, hence why I usually take off work that day. We don't hav an Acme around here (Ada/Lima/Findlay/Kenton) area, and I'm not willing to drive miles and miles to save a few bucks. I just know what the prices are around where I live at.

Pumpkin shortage? Where? Nor Cal has um by the boat loads! Safeway has six huge stands filled to the brim with um. Sam's and Costo? Tons...literally. All about the same price though...4 to 8 dollars depending on weight.

So um...whose got a pumpkin shortage supposedly? did I miss a story about it or something?

Pumpkin boat loads?

Funny you should mention that... :))

Nothing is certain in giant pumpkin racing.

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk296/bigoldfartdude/Pumpkinboat1.jpg

At the third annual Giant Pumpkin Regatta held on Oct. 4 as part of this year’s CSD Giant Pumpkin Festival of Elk Grove, there were several last-minute substitutions, late entries and a close finish.

The five entrants took giant pumpkins from the previous day’s weigh-off and hollowed them out into boats. They then set off in a race across Elk Grove Regional Park’s lake with a $500 prize in sight.

Roger Cook, last year’s champion, sank at the halfway point when his 547-pound pumpkin pitched forward, wallowing in a flood of murky lake water.

Galt resident Frank Loduca arrived too late to carve his pumpkin, and decided to swim the length of the race, pushing his pumpkin along in front of him. Click LINK (http://www.egcitizen.com/articles/2009/10/06/news/doc4acbd685724ac926424016.txt)

Video is of Elk Grove California Giant Pumpkin & Harvest Festival 2007.

The Cosumnes Community Services District, has a new Festival tradition as participants paddle their way across the lake in boats made from giant pumpkins.

It is a video of people in America doing what they do best, being unabashedly silly in the most outlandish of ways.

I know the farmers here in Upstate New York were hit pretty hard by heavy rains right before harvest and a lot of pumpkins rotted in the fields.

That said, there seem to be plenty around.

I wonder what they would do and say if you tried to return the pumpkin or try to get a price match on it. You should try it and then post the clerks reaction.

Speaking of pumpkin celebrations those of you from Ohio probably know how huget he Circleville pumpkin festival is, well a few years ago a buddy of mine from college had a sister in the running for "Pumpkin Queen". She was first runner up sadly....but that's the only interesting pumpkin story I can think of right now.
