read the comments to the Times-Picayuen article above. most of the posters are locals and you can see even they are not too happy.
I attend UNO (which is an offshoot of LSU from way back when) and to those not from here, UNO is on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain, not in the city itself. part of the lakeview area which was heavily devasted b/c one the Corp's Flood Canal's (London ave.) broke TWICE. no, this is not the same canal that broke in lower 9. I'll say this much, though I am glad for the attention that UNO is getting, at least he's attending REAL Louisiana/New Orleans school (sorry Tuh-Lane is not a "local" school; only 10% of their students from here), I wish he'd use a different building. Let me explain,...
Of the possible buildings he could have used, the UNO Lakefront arena holds well over 10,000, the performing arts center where plays are done would easily hold a few thousand or more. but no, he does it in our student gym?! granted fema prob paid for the basketball court floor just installed finally post-Katrina, but the gym is packed every day AND its in one of the busiest parking lots on the campus and parking here can be attrocious, esp in the mornings. (his telempromter is set for 1:15pm). roughly 1,500 hand picked (democrats/supporters Im sure) are set to attend. the gym's size? not sure, but it has a 1/10 mile running track circling it above if that helps and 3 side-by-side b-ball courts underneath. it will be a madhouse here for his highness's visit. thanks Obama. Im grateful for the attention to UNO, but wish it were not here on the main campus. again, i also he'd visit otehr places here, but the comments to the NOLA.com article echo me quite well.
PS, info on UNO's fitness center, etc with a few pics...
