What is the protocal? I'm not aware of it either.

The protocol is using ones common sense to not abuse the "Breaking News" lead in by making it part of a joke or using it in other manners that tends to diminish the importance of the lead in.

Think "Crying Wolf".

Further... there was nothing of 'Breaking' import about your thread.

Lastly; we reserve "Breaking" , "Breaking News", etc titles on the boards for items of extreme and urgent import... like a terror attack, major earthquake, etc. That provides us (and members) a means to alert our membership of such significant events.
