Was Obma's victory more of America's embrace of liberalism or was it more of a repudiation of Bush and his policies? Sadly for liberals, it appears that the latter is the case as Obama's eroding poll numbers indicate. Obama, assuming that he somehow embodied the zeigeist of a nation ready to move forward, embarked on his quest to reshape America into his version of a liberal utopia, one that he felt confident in as he had the nation's backing or so he thought. Surely with control of both the Senate and the House, democrats would have been expected to be able to pass their health care reform with relative ease if the nation had suddenly shifted to the left. The nation-wide opposition to democrat-led health care reform shows that this mandate to govern from the left never really existed at all.

The truth is America was simply tired of Bush. Perhaps the daily excoriation Bush received in the media made this inevitable but regardless, Bush ended his term with very low approval ratings. Obama was simply in the right place at the right time. He was a fresh face, the perfect candidate for a country ready for change. That he had little practical experience and wavered on his political beliefs mattered little to America at the time. Now that they have seen Obama under the glare of the bright lights for several months now, Americans are no longer sure he is capable of leading this nation. From his questionable cabinet appointments to his Apology World Tour, it is natural to wonder if Obama really has America's best interests at heart. When America elected Obama, little did they know that they would be in for the liberal mainstays of industry takeovers, deficit spending and bigger government. They just wanted to be rid of Bush.

While it is true that liberals will be in power for a couple more years, I would not be surprised to see many liberal incumbents lose their seats in 2010 if they continue on with their policy of altering the free market system. I think Americans are waking up to the fact that capitalism, not liberalism, is what made America the great country that it is. If anything, we can thank Obama and his self aggrandizing behavior for making all of this possible.
