I noticed that this is one of the gizmos this software makes possible:

What is reputation?
Reputation is a way of rating users depending on the quality of their posts. If the administrators have enabled reputation, then the reputation icon will be visible in posts.

Reputation may be positive http://forums.hannity.com/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif , negative http://forums.hannity.com/images/reputation/reputation_neg.gif or neutral http://forums.hannity.com/images/reputation/reputation_balance.gif. Negative reputation may only be given if the administrator has enabled this. Neutral reputation is only given when the person giving reputation does not meet the criteria set by the administrator to affect someone else's reputation.

How do I give reputation?
To give reputation, click on the reputation icon in the relevant post. This will reveal a form to complete with the reputation type and the reason for giving the reputation. If negative reputation is disabled then it will not be displayed in this form. You may not give reputation for the same post twice.

How do I know what reputation I have received?
You can view the reputation that you have received in your User CP (http://forums.hannity.com/usercp.php) (User Control Panel) where it is displayed at the bottom of the User CP page. Here you will see the latest reputation that you have received and whether this is positive, negative or neutral. Your total reputation will be shown as series of reputation indicators in your posts and profile. The more positive your reputation, the more positive icons will be shown. The more negative your reputation the more negative icons will be shown....

I didn't see this function working at the moment. Just curious - was this a conscious decision not to enable this? Because my deep-seeded narcissm requires lots of positive reinforcement from all of the right people, and lots of negative reinforcement from all of the right people as well.

Would there be any chance of turning on this feature? I know this has potential for ganging up on people, but in forums like Washington Politics at least, it goes hard enough both ways that the thicker skin would prevail.

Plus, it would give those of us who are at work ample chance to register our approval or disapproval without wasting break time and company time on composing a response. Plus, it would give new users more than raw post count to sort out the wise men from the fools on both sides.

I enjoy your signature picture.

Does that count?

I am sure it would be used by posters to harass other posters and that is why it is disabled.

*sniffle* It helps. Every little bit helps.

Yeah, I think that would be a problem in the making.

Yeah, we weren't mature enough to handle the rating feature for threads, I doubt they'll trust us with the rep feature.

When we beta tested this board, we saw it being a nuisance which would soon turn into a weapon of partisanship and a pain for moderators.

This board breaks all the rules, talking about politics and religion and such so the feature will stay disabled because this board isn't like the boards it was designed for.

On programming boards it works reasonably well because the goal is to help people with projects. The more people you help the more rep you get, but those boards sometimes have general forums where the same issues that get discussed here are discussed. That dilutes the situation, because it is then all the problems that were just mentioned rear their ugly heads.

As a function restricted to use by moderators only perhaps.

General membership would have a tendency to use it as a weapon and thus the function would be therefore useless, meaningless. We do our best to keep the membership focused on ISSUES rather that each other. The function would only serve to defeat that focus.

Yeah, I guess I wasn't realizing how different this board is from what the function was probably intended for, like tech help boards and other some such.

Anyway, thanks mods for answering.

I post at a religious board where only positive reps can be given.
It works really great, and is useful when you don't have time to make a post, but want to let a member know you appreciate a great post.

I wish we had it here, as I find myself very often wanting to give someone a rep.:) I have seen others post a "+1" which is basically the same thing, so I guess I need to try doing that.
