It's kid food I say, right up there with baloney sandwiches, and pork and beans. I always look at my honey funny when he makes a pb&j. What are some foods you ate as a kid, but can't bring yourself to eating them now?

So far this year, from the "pickins" from our yard, we have made 30 pints of apple sauce, 9 jars of grape jelly, 15 jars of strawberry jam, 6 jars of crabapple jelly (crabapples are just now ripe, so there is more of that to come), 9 jars of hawthorn jelly (ditto like the crabapples), and 9 jars of apple jelly. I plan on using LOTS of peanut butter this year. ;)

Millions of adults eat bologna sandwiches. In fact my favorite kind of bologna sandwich is a fried bologna sandwich. I eat that at least twice a week for lunch.

Had fried bologna, toasted wheat bread, and eggs with salsa for breakfast yesterday.
I prefer my bologna fried.
Had Bock-wurst, pork and beans, with fried onions and taters for supper last night.
I like pork and beans.
I will eat regular bologna sandwiches if we are out of cotto salami, but they have to have lots of ketchup or mustard.

The problem as I recall with Oreos was there was too much wafer to the icing. This required losing at least one of the wafers.
The food I can vaguely remember that I would not touch today was dipping butter in sugar. However, I may have just been ahead of my time. I understand the new food at the Texas State Fair this year is to be deep fried butter.
As to PBJ, I hope that, when I have my last meal (God willing many years from now) that it will be a PBJ.

I'm not a huge PB fan - never was - but I do have the occasional PB&J sandwich.
We had pork and beans with hotdogs and cornbread for dinner the other night. It was my favorite meal in school and I usually had the cafeteria all to myself whenever it was served for lunch.
Bologna is still a favorite. Either as a sandwich with cheese, mustard and mayo - or a fried bologna sandwich - quarter each slice and eat on a saltine - or made as fried bologna gravy (similar to chip beef gravy), over biscuits.
I can't eat the cereal's I liked as a kid - Captain Crunch and Trix - as they're too sweet now but I still love most everything else!

Yes I do often make a pb&j sandwiches. Along with peanut butter on bagels, preserves like strawberrie and blackberrie are two of my faverates.
Very filling high in protien very filling and easy as it comes for a quick lunch. A nice firm potatoe bread is a must with good perserves to have a pefect sandwich, one must have the PB consistant. Jelly is really good but I find the perserves are just a little more tasty....I really like the homemade blackberrie preserves I make, along with everyone eles.
I cant face baloney so there is no doubt about seeing your point here in at least one direction.
I may have grown up...but the lure of a good old fashioned PB&J sandwich is still close to very close my heart.

What is bock-wurst?
Bockwurst Sausage
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk296/bigoldfartdude/bockwurst.jpg
A type of sausage traditionally made from ground veal and pork (usually more veal than pork), with milk and eggs added, that may be seasoned with chives and parsley. The mixture is finely ground and packed into a thin sheep's casing. German in origin, this sausage is pale in color before being cooked and becomes tan colored after being cooked. Indicative of its light coloring when made fresh, bockwurst is also known as Weisswurst, translated to mean white sausage. Although sold as a partially cooked or smoked sausage, it is typically sold raw or fresh, so it is important that it be thoroughly cooked or smoked before it is eaten. To prepare, heat the sausage in water that is boiling lightly until it is thoroughly cooked, which is typically 10 or 15 minutes. In addition to boiling, it can be fried or grilled, cooking it on all sides until golden brown. If fried or grilled, slit the casing in several locations to allow the casing to expand as it cooks without breaking apart.
To store, keep the fresh sausage refrigerated and use within several days as it is highly perishable and will spoil easily. It is a sausage that goes well with cabbage, sauerkraut, fried potatoes, dark heavy breads, seasoned mustard, and beer.

I eat peanut butter (but read the ingredients and make sure it is 100% peanuts and not filled-in with hydrogenated fat/oils).
Sunflower butter, almond butter, sesame seed butter...all kinds of butter (with 100% of the nut/seed/legume).
They are very good for you!
I love peanut butter with bananas. I slice the banana up into little disks, slather peanut butter on Cape Cod Rounds crackers, and then put the banana slices on top.
Jelly and jams and peanut butter (or other butters), I like too. My favorite jam is blueberry. My favorite jelly is grape. My least favorite is marmalade--I just don't like that...oh, and quince...

Nut butters are really good for you. "Good fats". As long as they're in moderation and aren't loaded with extra fat. I don't eat it often, but it's only because it's off my personal radar screen. Out of sight, out of mind.
What I ate and don't, now?
Bologna sandwiches: White bread, mayo, bologna with sweet pickles. YUM! Hadn't eaten it for many years, but jonesed for it during one pregnancy. I had to really put a bridle on it or it would have spun out of control. Again, morning sickness. IT was hard being nauseaus for that long and then to discover the twisted truth that things like fried donuts and bologna didn't upset my stomach. Even with that, I had to stay away. Not a great building block to make a baby.
Ice cream, root beer floats...
Pork and beans, camping food. I would eat if I were camping, though! LOL
Kid desserts like Twinkies, HoHos, DingDongs....But a couple of years ago, I was bummed out and broke down and bought a box of Twinkies for the heck of it. Something really bad happpened....
I found out that they were still GOOD! Ate the whole box, eventually. LOL
I did try a kid food that I LOVED back then...those apple pie things that are on some stands near the cashier in a grocery store. I adored them back then. Tried to eat one and it was gross. That was probably a good thing!
I used to also eat sweet cereals dry, as a snack. Capt'n Crunch, that sort of thing. That stuff is still good! But since I would like to not weigh 400 pounds and to retain my teeth, I don't buy it.

I eat two pb&j sandwiches almost every day for lunch.
Skippy all natural peanut butter slathered about a quarter inch thick on oatnut bread and I consider the strawberry preserves I use to be more strawberry filling than spread. A big huge blob of s. preserves and you've got to hold the edges of the bread together when you eat the sandwich to prevent all that "filling" from squishing out. Washed down with a diet coke.
MMMMMM MMMMMMMM MMMMMMM.

I still occasionally will have a glass of ice cold milk and a PB&J sandwich, and I'm in my 50's. If it tasted good when I was a kid, why wouldn't it still taste good now?
Oh.... and as for the baloney sandwiches.... I make one kick ass fried baloney sandwich. It's a staple during football season.

PB&J! My favorite. Jiff is the best hold the nuts. Orange marmalade goes real well with it.

I still do PB and apples for a snack. My mom taught me a trick about sliced apples that you can cover them with lemon juice and they won't turn brown, dunno why, must have something to do with the citric acid but sliced apple with peanut butter is the BOMB.
Things I really don't eat anymore that I did when I was a kid:
Honey roasted peanuts: They make my mouth feel funny now, like numb and they ruin my sense of taste for hours. Used to love 'em as a kid.
Popsicles: Loved 'em as a kid, cause major brain freeze now. Not sure why I could bite them and munch em when I was younger but now the cold goes right to the base of my eyeballs. May have something to do with adult teeth vs. kid teeth.
Grilled cheese sandwiches. Used to love 'em. Now... just EEEWWW. Slimy tasteless things.

I am under the impression that the immunity to p,b& j in the combination with white bread decreases as one grows older until one reaches 21 when the immunity disappears completely after which it becomes fatal.
I may be wrong but I have no desire to test that belief.

Never had salami either. Side effect of keeping kosher (I don't now, but did for a long time). There is kosher bologna, but I've never had it.
I've never had Kosher bologna. When I think of the issue, I think "Oscar Myer". LOL I should try it. But I have to drive to get to a Kosher deli here, and once there, I'm leaning towards the pastami on rye.
Never had salami? Oh my...there is bad salami and then there is great salami. Gallo presliced...with Triscuits. Or a sandwich on a hard roll, kosher dill pickles on the side. Yum!
Terrible weakness for it. I can't get it here, it's only sold in like 7 western states (result of a lawsuit over the name, I found this out trying to order it from the manufacturer). My mom sends it to me once in awhile as a treat. It's a good thing that she does it rarely too, else I'd weigh 300 pounds.
Bad salami is like boring summer sausage. There are those that love that sort of thing, I find it bland and uninteresting.

I'm sure that you've eaten 'parts' many times in your life.
My parents were raised on farms. They made their own sausage.
Btw, if you think about it, there isn't a part of an animal that wasn't in a, let's say, cootie place. Either with regards to the part itself, or the processing.
There is a serious reason why you pay attention to cooking temperatures with meat.

Btw, there is such a thing called 'bad grilled cheese'. Being too heavy handed with the butter and cheese, not grilling it correctly so that it's greasy and soggy. Blech!
However, light hand with the butter, just the right amount of cheese. Toasted to perfection. Heaven!

Grilled cheese done with extra sharp cheddar a light layer of horse radish sauce on one side and a very light layer of MW on the other with cracked black pepper. The bread should be either sour dough or roasted garlic. Then on the outside you lightly spread REAL butter on then sprinkle with a bit of garlic powder and coarse salt. Grill to a perfect golden brown then stuff it down your gullet with tomato soup made with milk garlic a dash of red pepper. In the bowl of soup you layer crispy Chinese noodles shredded cheddar then ladle on the soup.
That is how you have tomato soup and grilled cheese. ;)

I like mine with just the right mix of buffalo and goat cheese. I used to love just plain cheese, but no more cow products for me unless they are said to be "good to go" by a guru. That means that the cows have to be free range, milked only a few times a year, and treated like the beautiful creatures they are (at least brought into the barn in the winter and let them live out their lives fully).

I'm red/green too, and I have the same problem with green/brown. In fact, there's a house a few doors down from my parents that for years I insisted was brown despite everyone else telling me it was green. I do tend to stay away from green/brown in my clothing decisions as a result of this...
Comically enough...I play flag football during the fall/winter, and for a little while our line of scrimmage marker was a red bean bag. I'm red/green too, and I have the same problem with green/brown. In fact, there's a house a few doors down from my parents that for years I insisted was brown despite everyone else telling me it was green. I do tend to stay away from green/brown in my clothing decisions as a result of this...
Good idea to stay away from green and brown. It can really be a problem for you red/greenies. ;)
My poor grandfather had a great sense of humor. He used his color blindness to play jokes on my grandmother and tease her. He often purposely bought things in horrific shades of green just to see her reaction. What a guy he was---miss him dearly.
I'd love to have him pull up in a neon/puke green car right about now. Only problem is he'd be 110 years old if he were still alive. Somehow I don't think he'd still be driving. ;)
Comically enough...I play flag football during the fall/winter, and for a little while our line of scrimmage marker was a red bean bag. First time we used it, on the first play, I was about five yards offside...someone said "can't you see the marker?", and I looked around for a second and said "what marker?"
Damned beanbag just disappeared into the grass!! :))
What color did you convince them to change it to?

One kids food I'm never going to eat again is the infamous Lunch Lady Jello Spiked With Peas.
Lunch Lady, I may have been just a kid but I'm not stupid and Jello is transparent so I can see perfectly well that there are peas in there.
Peas are not on the list of acceptable dessert food. I think it's somewhere in the Geneva Convention that you can't serve peas for dessert. Oranges and bananas are okay but vegetables in the dessert cross a line that should never be crossed.
Except for Pumpkin Pie. And then only with a pile of whipped cream.

LOVE PB&J. Except when the peanut butter is crunchy. That really ruins it for me.
The jelly is the gamekiller for me. If it soaks into the bread and hardens it up into a weapon of mouth destruction, then it's going to cause some real suffering.
It's bad enough that peanut butter sticks to the roof of the mouth, but with jelly soaking into the bread and turning it into shards of flour glass glued to the roof of the mouth it's a potentially painful experience.
That is why, if I eat PB&J, I eat it JELLY SIDE DOWN. Most people go the opposite way and eat the Peanut Butter side down, because the peanut butter side has been pretty much waterproofed and that bread wouldn't be soaked in a Hurricane, but the Jelly side is the soggy end. Still, it needs to be on the bottom because the roof of the mouth is delicate and the peanut butter can either shield the threat or stick it there.
The nuclear option to this problem is to go beyond the jelly: use jam instead.

Nothing worse than the peanut butter at the top of the mouth that's why I will NEVER, EVER have PB&J without milk. Water isn't good enough. It has to be milk or I just skip the sandwich altogether. I've lost many perfectly good PB&J sandwiches that way. But I've created many happy homeless bums.

All you need is a bit of curry Ketchup and a brotchen....
My German Grandmother would have probably batted me out of my chair for putting any kind of ketchup on any kind of Wurst.....LOL. German mustard or nothing. And you better eat your kraut and potato's.
I still eat PB&J and Bologna sandwiches. But it has to be thick sliced stick bologna not the the pre packaged oscar meyer kind.

I have a friend in Germany who hooks me up with these HUGE bottles a couple times a year. I have to admit I hoard those from The Husband and The Daughter...they get the brand I posted

Things I ate as a kid that I don't eat now.
Not many.
I don't eat white bread
I don't drink milk.
Odd things I eat-
Sardines on toast with a fried egg on top.
Buttermilk with cornbread crumbled up in it. (not odd where I live- odd to yankees)
Scrambled egg sandwiches with potato chips on it.

For you Bologna lovers, try this.
Get about a 4 inch thick hunk of Bologna. You don't want it sliced, just a solid hunk.
Score the Bologna with a sharp knife in a criss-cross fashion about 1 inch apart.
Slather it with Ketchup then squirt it generously with yellow mustard.
Now the messy part. Press brown sugar into the messy mixture . You have to press it in to the scores.
Wrap very tightly in aluminum foil and bake at 350 for 30min. Open the foil to expose the Bologna then broil for a just few minutes to carmelize the sugars. Just a few minutes it can burn pretty easy.
Place a cookie sheet underneath it to prevent the oozing Ketchup/mustard/brown sugar from dripping in the oven.
Slice and enjoy as is or make into a sandwich.

When I was a kid my Parents would buy very large jars of PB and usually grape Jelly (I have 9 siblings; one gone to PB&J heaven). I would smooth the PB on 5 slices of bread then pile on the jelly with a table spoon and squish um with the other 5 slices of white wonder bread. Great stuff! At least back then. I still on occasion do this but only with 2 slices of whole wheat. There's way to much fat in PB for my system to handle now. I heard there are much reduced fat PB's on the market now. I'll have to check it out. And you're right jimjames...it does make ya feel like a kid again somehow. Perhaps it's the memories.
Be well all and don't clog your arteries closed with all that fat!
