Just out of curiosity, what was Polanski facing for his crime at the time, before and after the judge reversed course and nullified the plea bargain?

They guy should do jail time for what he did.

The girl was 13 years old. That's the end of the discussion for me. There is no way that a 40-something guy can defend touching a kid like that. I can't think of any excuse that holds water. I don't care if it was "rape-rape" or not, it's WRONG and the creep should fry for it.
I'm not a feminist. Unlike feminists, I actually respect women. Taking advantage of a woman ticks me off, and taking advantage of a little girl totally FROSTS me.
Whoopi missed the entire point. It doesn't really matter that Mr. Polanski made the rape as pleasant as he possibly could. Nor does it matter that the child got a civil lawsuit settlement. The fact remains that the creep committed rape and child molestation. That doesn't go away with a glass of champagne and a checkbook.
The crime is plain, and so is the punishment. This creep is going to spend the rest of his life in prison if there's any justice in this world.

Let's face it, plea bargains happen. What he DID was rape a 13 year old in 3 ways. If you haven't read the transcript of the grand jury of this child, do so.

The plea deal was for 90 days in a mental hospital, not sure what the judge was considering giving him after the plea deal was negated.

Actually, many think that this was a 'pretty rape', but it wasn't. What 13 yr doesn't or won't feel pain at being sodomized? She also said no. Several have defended him b/c he's a good director, and the victim wants to move on. He also only plead guilty to having sex w/ a minor and not rape. It's my understanding that the law and terminology was different then....not that it matters.

A 13 year old does not have the capacity or life experience to fully understand what she is getting into or the repercussions of having sex at that age or the damage it can do to one's mind, spiritualality, future relationships, self-esteem, etc. Thankfully, this girl didn't pregnant by this monster.
From Whoopi's own words, she was brought up in the ghetto and was drug addicted herself for many years (we are talking hard drugs here, folks, - heroin, LSD, etc.) I give little credence to what her perception of what "normal" is. Even with all the millions she has made - she has never quite gotten out of that "ghetto" thinking. She must find herself in a weird position - she puts on this pretense of being "cool, just like my ghetto friends", yet lives in a mansion and makes millions a year. She probably isn't quite accepted by anyone or fits into either group.
From the time she started on The View, I have always thought she seemed very out of place. The other hosts actually have class (something she lacks). I find her very overbearing, and thought it was only a matter of time, before she took over that show - and by doing so - ruining it.
Whoopi should be extremely grateful for the unbelievable fortune in her life and should leave opinions of what acts are appropriate for children to be involved in - to trained psychologists, one's religious beliefs, and children's parents. Her comments were outrageous and uninformed. I hope no 13 year child out there who watched this outrage, took her comments seriously.

I heard a few blurbs yesterday on this topic..and didn't fully understand the issue..so I ignored it. Seems to be what everyone in Hollywierd is doing as well. My excuse is house chores...what's Hollywoods?
From what I understand, Roman Polanski took a 13 year old, gave her drugs (Quaaludes if I understood correctly..how very 80's of Roman ) and alcohol, and 'raped' her by sodomy in his hot tub. Now if that's not rape...or rape rape..then what in the hell is? I mean really? What is Whoopies definition of rape? Roman didn't give her a few good punches during the act? I mean what is Whoopie thinking? This was a girl of 13 for Gods sake! Still a baby!
What really steamed my vegies was that Roman only got 40 days! 40 damn days! Gee, guess sodomizing a child just isn't what it used to be? Makes me wanna spew! This ass hat is running from 40 days? Makes you wonder just how puffed up this little man really is to think he can get away with whatever he wants when he wants....and with people like Whoppie and Debra Winger..who can blame him for thinking that way?
Any last little speck of respect I had for Whoopie just flew out the window. I think those that have made ridiculous statements in support of Roman are going to find a bit more then distaste at the harsh flash back of public opinion. Get the popcorn ready..gonna be some serious back peddling in Hollywierd here very soon.

The "ass-hat" fled because he was afraid of 40 days of sodomy... without the benefit of quaaludes. And that is exactly what he should get today... with additional days added to the original sentence for each day of his self imposes exile.
Maybe he could make a movie about it...

Statute of limitations would apply if he'd never been convicted, but he was. (Or more correctly, he copped to it.) All he is now is a fugitive from justice, and that never goes away.

HE should be shot like a rabid mongrel dog for the good of humanity.Technically Ms. Goldberg is correct since the rape charges were dismissed in exchange for Polanski's plea to unlawful sex with a minor (statutory rape).
That being said the PLEA does not change the facts (whatever they are).

Debra Winger says "The whole art world suffers" because of arrests like this.
What a stupid thing to say. What is making the "art world" suffer is Hollyweird's defense of this baby-raping bastard. You've got directors, actors and actresses throwing their reputations in the toilet supporting this gross criminal misconduct and THAT is what makes the "art world" ugly.
Any other biz would fire the creep. Seriously. Fill out a job application and mention that you're wanted in California for raping a 13-year-old kid and see if anybody hires ya.
In an opinion piece in London's the Independent, Weinstein Co. co-founder Harvey Weinstein, who is circulating the pro-Polanski petition, wrote: "Whatever you think about the so-called crime, Polanski has served his time. A deal was made with the judge, and the deal is not being honored. . . . This is the government of the United States not giving its word and recanting on a deal, and it is the government acting irresponsibly and criminally."
Served his time? 40 DAYS for RAPING A BABY GIRL?
If any judge made that deal, that judge was a liberal weenie who shouldn't be on the bench. Malfeasance in office negates any "deal" and such a dishonorable "deal" should never be kept. This kind of thing is EXACTLY why the public overwhelmingly supports mandatory sentencing and taking power out of the hands of spineless weak-kneed liberal judges who won't punish criminal behavior because it feels good to be a nice guy.
What hurts the "art world" is associating with scum baby rapists and ruining reputations by throwing in with the kind of creep who would do such a thing.

Exactly! Couldn't agree more Gene....
I have a question: I understand this crime, this horrific episode of rape happened many years ago. I also understand that Roman pleaded out to a deal..and then didn't keep his word; running to Europe instead of paying his due's to society. My only question is this...why now? Why after so many years are the courts finally making Roman pay for his torrid little gross fest with a 13 year old? What happened or changed that they are finally holding his feet to the fire?
thanks in advance to anyone who can enlighten me on this....

M'Kay...got that..he ran to Europe....in 1978.....soooo...why is it that the authorities have waited until 2009 to go after him? It's not like Roman was hiding...it's not like he was untraceable...not like he was trying to avoid capture. So why? Why now? I don't get it.
Side note..I read the transcript of his victim about the offense. A deal that would include either probation up to 16 months in jail seems very very light to me. You read the transcripts and have to wonder why Roman isn't up for mandatory minimums of 10 years or more!?
What gives?

The way I read it is he found a loophole in that France doesn't include child molestation in their extradition treaty with the USA. As long as he was in France he was effectively untouchable, but he wasn't so lucky with Switzerland and it was well-publicized that he'd be travelling to get an award.

Thank you Gene....I didn't understand what or why it took 30 some odd years to capture a fugitive of this caliber. Hiding in France obviously protected him from having to face the music here in the USA...nice, real nice. Isn't France supposed to be one of our allies? (read sarcastic tone here)
One would think that skipping the country would count for something as far as jail time...maybe it's not the time I'd want him or expect him to spend behind bars for raping this girl...but at least he's serving time.
One more stupid question....why is it taking so long to drag his sorry butt back here? He's in Switzerland...neutral territory....shouldn't take much to bag and tag him and put him on a plane back to USA. So whats the hold up now? What twisted legal wranglings are happening that it's slowing the extradition now?
side note....I would have hired me a damn bounty hunter myself to bring his sorry butt back here had he done this to one of my daughters ...but hey, that's just me. :shhh:

She can be nuttier than a fruitcake, foul mouthed, and over the top some (most?) of the time...but way deep down there's still the Wichita girl who grew up with some strong moral convictions that breaks out and speaks her mind.
As for the pictures...she should just take the same attitude with the press...she's doing far more harm with the gaining/losing/gaining/losing than if she just found a happy medium and stayed there. But the press can't help themselves...she let them down by gaining weight and not being "perfect" in their eyes. How dare she be human?!?!?!?
