Govt warns Toyota owners about stuck accelerators
By KEN THOMAS (AP) – 51 minutes ago
WASHINGTON — The government is warning owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles about safety problems tied to removable floor mats.
They say the mats could interfere with the vehicle's accelerator and cause a crash.
The Transportation Department says owners should take out the floor mats on the driver's side and not replace them. A large vehicle recall is expected later Tuesday.

Don't most cars have removable floor mats?
What is significant about these mats that make a recall necessary.
The mat in my car has a hole and a hook to keep it in place. It does not move.
More info would be helpful.

In a separate report we believe to be unrelated, there have been reports of the accelerator on deficit spending by the federal government getting stuck. The US is reportedly anticipating the resulting crash.
evidently obamas finger is stuck on the print button causing wide spread spending .Health care officials will try and release his finger as soon as obamacare passes and all money has been printed and redistributed .

I heard a recording of a 911 call where an idiot was driving one of the recalled piece of craps when the accelerator stuck. The moron wasnt smart enuff to put it in neutral or shut off the ignition, so while he was picking up speed he calls for help. IIRC he had 4 people with him and was crying to the person at 911, "OMG we are headed for an intersection and theres somebody coming". That was the last thing heard, IIRC everyone onboard was killed, some people are not smart enuff to be allowed to drive.

Chevrolets have an emergency brake. And regular brakes, and you put the transmission in neutral or reverse and wreck the car.

Its not just the Prius but most of the Toyota line and some Lexus as well.
Not everyone wants to drive a truck so what's the problem? No one forced anyone to buy a Prius, Camary or Lexus just as they did not force you to buy a Chevy truck. Ever look at the recall history of GM over the last 10 years or so? I've been driving Nissan's and Toyota's for 20 years and only recall till now was for a Nissan computer upgrade.
I have a Camary that will be in the recall. The problem is with the mats IF you don't keep it clipped in place nearest the seat.

Do american cars have this additional safety feature of holding the mat in place?

Since when has a floor mat been a design flaw? I had the same problem in my Mercury. Removed the mat, no problem. This could happen in any car, truck or SUV. Trying to make this the fault of Obama and foreign car makers is laughable.

Well it is the fault of the manufacturer.
That's why there's a recall under our safety rules. Apparently persons have already been hurt.
That obama pushed the clunkers program that resulted in a bunch of these cars being purchased by the easily fooled makes it obama's fault as this was his program.

See SFC's link in post #1 of this thread. Also just google on something like "Toyota recalls due to unintended acceleration" for additional links.
In this particular Lexus and Toyota event, Toyota is referring to sliding or loose floor mats being too close to the accelerator which could result in the floor mat pushing against the accelerator and causing unintended acceleration. (Specifically, they are referring to floor mats being put over the top of the original floor mats, on the driver's side.)
But floor mats or not, accelerators do "stick" from time to time. It would seem the best action to take would be to shift from drive into the neutral position. This would not shut off the engine but it would allow the driver to brake, pull over, and stop.
The Toyota manual says if you are driving along and must stop the engine, turn the ignition key to ACC (accessories), and this will shut off the engine.
In response to query, one local dealer said to NOT try to shut off the engine by turning the ignition switch to ACC. Another mechanic said it will damage the transmission and probably cause a serious accident if you put the shift lever into the neutral position while driving at a normal speed or higher. So no one has a definite answer. If it ever happens to me while driving along, I'm gonna to shift to neutral and hope it works.
Okay, comments are invited from all you macho, expert shade-tree mechanics. And no trying-to-be cute responses, please.
Thanks
Of course, the most simple thing to do would be to just buy vehicles with manual transmissions.

That's pretty laughable.
If Obama had been the automotive engineer who had designed these floor mats, I might see your point.
I did not know that Japanese cars were more susceptible than American cars to this phenomenon. I guess when I had that issue with my Merc it was because it was secretly a Japanese car.

I have built many race cars and street rods of various types from the ground up just to qualify.
You can go to neutral at any speed and it wont hurt an auto trans. But you can damage one by towing the car in neural for long distances, especially if the engine isnt running to keep oil pumping thru the trans, pump, and converter.
In my drag cars that have auto transmissions I have had to click into neutral at the finish line at 140+ mph. because of other mechanical problems and there has never been any trans problems from it.

Gee, I've had my Corolla for almost 13 years now. It's got the original floor mat. The little thing that held it in place broke years ago. I've never had an issue.
Hmm... could this possibly be politically motivated? It seems that Toyota sold more vehicles under the misnamed "cash for clunkers" program than any other manufacturer.

You're kidding right? Buy Chevrolet over Toyota? Heck, I'm not even the biggest Toyota fan (more of a Nissan, Bimmer fan) but you couldn't give me a Chevy over a Toyota.
The only Chevy cars I'd consider is a Corvette, which is not a bad car considering how unrefined they are compared to a 911 or a Fairlady Z. They have great engines, even if the transmissions aren't very good. The Cobalt SS, as ugly as it is, is a great little performance car. And the new Camaros are sexy. As were the older Camaros. Camaro was always a good car.
But give me a 1994 Mark IV Supra with some engine mods over any Camaro or Corvette any day. Saw a good drag race between a Mark IV Supra and a heavily modified 1998 Camaro LS1 Z28. The Camaro never stood a chance.

That's like saying a stock Mustang GT dusted an Audi R8 with no major mods.
I've seen Mustang GTs that could dust R8s, but they had blowers, shaved pistons, and every other modification known to mankind. Course, these were drag cars pumping about 800 horses to the rear wheels, so they'd pretty much embarrass an Enzo Ferrari in a drag.
You're comparing, at the most, 400 horsepower, 415 lbs of torque, to about 500 horsepower, 550 lbs of torque in a truck that isn't that much heavier than the Chevy with a superior transmission.
Of course, if the idiot didn't know what he was doing and was peeling tires through the first two gears, which is very easy to do in those trucks, heck very easy to do with an RWD vehicle with that much torque, then yes, you could have beat him.

If you honestly think a Colorado/Canyon is even in the same class as a Frontier, you've lost it.
The only redeeming factor about those trucks is the 5.3L V8 you can order in the extended cab models. But that defeats the purpose of a mid-size truck. A V8 in a small truck is STUPID. And GM was idiotic to make it, just like Dodge is stupid to still sell that crap 4.7L in the Dakota.
In a full-size truck, well, I don't plan on ever owning a full size truck. No point to it. A Frontier or a Tacoma will tow 7000 plus pounds, more than the average guy will ever need. If I need to tow something extremely heavy, think a horse trailer (doubtful since I hate horses), then why in the hell would I buy a 1/2 ton pickup with a gas burner?
If I'm doing heavy towing, it's a diesel or nothing at all. And since the GM diesels suck, I'm stuck with the Dodge and the Ford. Cummins is amazing, but I am not a Dodge fan. The Powerstrokes are finicky, but they are better than the Duramax.
Where the GM trucks excel is in their ability to do everything good with no major set backs. They're not the nicest truck (that'd go to the Ram), nor can they tow the most (F-150 is king, although it's gonna strain hard cause of it's pathetic engines) but it does everything right.
Too bad GM puts all of their guys on the Silverados and neglects their mid-size trucks to the point of embarrassment.

Too bad GM puts all of their guys on the Silverados and neglects their mid-size trucks to the point of embarrassment.
I do not waste my attention on ladies' trucks.

Of course you're dusting off Fords. Jeez, a Toyota with the 4.6L can dust a F-150 with the 5.4L. Fords are painfully slow. Heck, I can dust a F-150 with my Frontier. Not hard at all.
driving backwards, towing 2 prius?

Toyota ... the next Audi.
actually if you did any research you would know Audi makes very good car.
The A5 is actually a better car than BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, and a Jag in its class.
But why bother with facts?
Thats like syaing toyota overall makes worse cars than Chevy, ford, and dodge....
In fact they dont.

So everything without a Bow-tie is a lady's truck?
That's like saying every sports car that is not a 997 911 GT3 is crap. Which is not true. Just because the 911 GT3 is the best sports car ever made doesn't mean every other sports car is crap.
Trucks have different uses. If I tow 5000 pounds once or twice a month, then buying a full-size truck is STUPID.

That isn't what I wrote.
Not even close.
I wrote very plainly that trucks classed below full size according to JD Power size classifications are for ladies. That would include all manufacturers.
I rarely tow anyhting at all, and I wouldn't be caught driving a girl's truck.
Sorry.

You're opinion. Just so you know, the Americas are the only places where full-size trucks sell in a sizable number.
Girl's truck my ass.
And once again, show me a Chevrolet as good as a Mark IV Supra.

I don't think I can align my exhaust with your fireplace
Your Chevy would be in flames before you even made it to my state.
That's why over a million were recalled.

Since when has a floor mat been a design flaw? I had the same problem in my Mercury. Removed the mat, no problem. This could happen in any car, truck or SUV. Trying to make this the fault of Obama and foreign car makers is laughable.
To a small mind, it's a large problem, especially when multiplied by an intense hatred of Obama and them there "furrin" cars.

This was a veteran CHP (California Highway Patrol) officer driving a borrowed Lexus. I am familiar with the overpass where this took place, and it is a sharp turn on a very busy freeway that merges onto another congested freeway. He called while traveling at 70mph plus with no way to stop the car safely on the sharp curve to let them know that he was out of control so they could clear the road and/or respond immediately. He died along with his wife and daughter in the fiery crash that happened moments later. I was actually impressed that he had the mindset to think in terms of safety and response in that situation. Your post could be viewed as pretty offensive in light of the facts.

Fact is there were several safe ways to stop the car and a long time to calm down and do it if he were in a panic since he had time enuff to call someone and chit chat. The sharp curve has nothing to do with not stopping the car, it would be safer to stop for a sharp curve than to go thru it at full throttle. The smart thing is to stop the car instead of calling for help to let them know he was gonna crash.
I have had the throttle stick on probably 3 or 4 different vehicles over the years (One from a broken motor mount that made the motor torque to one side pulling the throttle linkage) and I instantly shut the engine off and put the trans in neutral at the same time just in case for some strange reason killing the ignition didnt work. The thought of calling someone to let them know I was just about to wreck never occurred to me, shutting the engine off just seems like a safer option, besides its against the law to use a cell phone while driving.
