Fox News goes HD only starting today; letterboxing will be used for SD coverage of FNC. They are one of the first major channels to go HD-only.

I'm not too interested in the screen ratio, but will it be in 1080p? 720 wouldn't even be too bad..

I thought it was just going widescreen. Looks fine on my crappy old Sanyo.

Well I wouldn't call widescreen HD, and the article does say it will downconvert and display in letterboxing for 4:3 TVs. You wouldn't be downconverting the ratio, as it will still be 16:9, so they must be downconverting from like 720 or 1080 down to 480 I would guess. Unfortunately the article doesn't suggest what they will be broadcasting in, just that it's widescreen and HD.

So why are there now large black bands above and below the picture on my HD plasma?

The set is set to 16:9, so is the satellite receiver.

^ I dunno. There are black bands on my non-HD, but I didn't notice any on my HD.

I get this every now and then on mine as well, mainly in movies. I've always questioned why they would be filming in a wider-screen than 16:9.

I hope they have an option to revert.
