There are two bills sitting on the desk of the Governor of California. These bills have received a staggeringly low level of publicity considering the fact that they are designed to create back-door registration and unconstitutionally limit our ability to exercise our Second Amendment rights.

AB962, sponsored by Assembly Member Kevin De Leon would make it a crime to transfer more than 50 rounds of ammunition per month, unless you are a DOJ licensed handgun ammunition vendor. You would not even be able to hand your brother a box of your own rounds at the shooting range because this applies to even your family and friends. This bill also requires you to submit your fingerprints before making a purchase. Your prints will be kept in the dealer's recoreds and must be available for inspection by the Department of Justice. Beyond the transparent attack on the Second Amendment, this legislation also attacks the firearm industry at an economic level as it requires all ammunition transactions to be done "face-to-face". This effectively eliminates internet and mail-order ammunition sales. In addition, all "licensed" dealers will now be required to ensure that inventory is not accessible to customers, creating the need to spend unnecessary dollars on basic to major modifications to their storefronts and storage locations. Even our own Olympic shooting team as well as all other educational and club-related teams will feel the effect of this unconstitutional scheme when it's time to pay for their practice rounds. Those of us who rely on the internet or mail-order prices for our re-loading materials, will be dead in the water. There are countless teams, clubs, businesses, and associated livelihoods that will be lost at the stroke of a single misguided pen.

SB585 would prohibit the sale of firearms AND ammunition on the property or inside the buildings that make up the Cow Palace in Daly City, California. This bill is nothing more than just another a stepping-stone in the path to banning gun shows on all publicly-owned property in California.

As free American citizens, as well as members of the California community, it is our responsibility to be engaged and involved in our government...yet, as soon as "We The People" cast our vote for our "representatives", our voices become unnecessary background noise. I have never written to a politician...until now. Below is the text of a letter that I recently sent to Governor Arnold Schwarznegger. I have yet to receive any type of response. I fear that his inaction will be that response.

Governor Schwarzenegger,

My mother was born in Steyr Austria and she came to the United States when she was 5 years old. I was blessed to be born a free American citizen, because my grandparents were passionate, resourceful and fortunate enough to make it to FREEDOM. I believe that as an immigrant yourself, you truly understand freedom and why this country is the ONLY place on this planet that is still blessed with a freedom-based Constitution.

I have long been a fan and eventually became a political supporter of yours because I believed that it was your goal to provide actual representation based upon the wishes of Californians.

NOW is the time to prove to California, that you are not just another politician. NOW is the time for you to prove to AMERICA, through your example, that our representatives in government should not merely follow the dictates from above, (be they direct or implied) but should act in the actual wishes and best interests of the people to whom they are responsible. Notice I said responsible to...not responsible for.

One of the rights that was singled out to be guaranteed by our Constitution, is the right to keep and bear arms. Keep (Own) and bear (Carry) arms. There are countless laws on the books that are in place to control the unlawful possession and use of those arms. These laws are rarely enforced and all to often the charges attached to those laws are plea-bargained down to various lower charges or removed as part of a deal that ultimately leads to the offender ending up back on the streets to re-commit the same or worse offenses. The overwhelming majority of gun owners are law abiding, God fearing people who are statistically less likely to be involved in ANY type of crime.

Violent crime IS NOT caused by guns. Violent crime is perpetrated by violent people who possess and utilize handguns in a manner that is outside the existing and weakly enforced laws. Limiting or even removing access to handguns will not reduce violent crime…It simply WILL NOT. It will, however, ONLY impact those gun owners who already follow the law and do not commit the violent crimes that government seems intent upon reducing. History demonstrates that violent crime will likely increase due to emboldened criminals who are confident in the fact that their victims wil not have a viable way to protect themselves.

Is there any logic in being forced to sell your Harley because your neighbor got a ticket in his Hummer? Not only was it not the fault of the Hummer…it was not YOUR fault that your neighbor chose to break the existing law against speeding. Does it make any sense at all, to punish the law-abiding citizens in attempt to control the behavior of those who will always continue to break the same laws? At the very least, the law-abiding citizen should be allowed to exercise his natural, Constitutionally guaranteed, individual right to protect himself and his family from that other citizen who refuses to respect the law.

That being said...I urge you to be an example. Be a true representative of "We the People". I urge you to consider the freedom with which you were blessed when you came to the United States. I strongly urge you to VETO AB 962 and SB 585.

You stand at the cross-roads Governor. To your left is a road that leads to a California...an America..that no longer resembles that which our framers and founders provided for us. The road to the right leads directly to a state and nation that is truly of, by and for THE PEOPLE. How will you be remembered Governor? I am hopeful that you will decide to let FREEDOM be your legacy.

Sincerely,

A concerned, law-abiding, California gun owning, free American citizen
