Inside the Apocalyptic Soviet Doomsday Machine.
By Nicholas Thompson 09.21.09
"The Perimeter system is very, very nice,' he says. 'We remove unique responsibility from high politicians and the military.' He looks around again."
"Yarynich is talking about Russia's doomsday machine. That's right, an actual doomsday device—a real, functioning version of the ultimate weapon, always presumed to exist only as a fantasy of apocalypse-obsessed science fiction writers and paranoid über-hawks. The thing that historian Lewis Mumford called "the central symbol of this scientifically organized nightmare of mass extermination." Turns out Yarynich, a 30-year veteran of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces and Soviet General Staff, helped build one."

President: Then you mean it is possible for them to have built such a thing?

Strangelove: Mr. President, the technology required is easily within the means of even the smallest nuclear power. It requires only the will to do so.

President: But, how is it possible for this thing to be triggered automatically, and at the same time impossible to untrigger?

Strangelove: Mr. President, it is not only possible, it is essential. That is the whole idea of this machine, you know. Deterrence is the art of producing in the mind of the enemy... the fear to attack. And so, because of the automated and irrevocable decision making process which rules out human meddling, the doomsday machine is terrifying. It's simple to understand. And completely credible, and convincing.

Turgidson: Gee, I wish we had one of them doomsday machines.

Strangelove: Yes, but the... whole point of the doomsday machine... is lost... if you keep it a secret! Why didn't you tell the world, eh?

Mine too.

Mandrake: Now look, Colonel... Bat Guano, if that really is your name, may I tell you that I have a very, very good idea, I think, I hope, I pray, what the recall code is. It's some sort of recurrent theme he kept repeating. It's a variation on Peace on Earth or Purity of Essence. E O P. O P E. It's one of those!

His lying mouth is his device. It's what pimps use, and he's the master PIMP.

You notice he whistles when he speaks. Funny as hell, probably the gaps in his teeth.

Yes, most sane people do miss him, especially when you look at the current Republican bench.

In a bizarre case of life imitating art, the Soviets in real life also chose not to reveal its existence. The reasons why are explained in the 3rd page of the article.

No, Wired produces quite excellent articles on IT topics and technology in general.
You're thinking of the alternative meaning of "wired".

I miss that 2 trillion he added to the already 1 trillion National debt. Very Conservative.

Reagan was a borrow and spend lib.
