View Full Version : Palin speech draws full house

Former Governor Palin appears to have been well received. Worst criticism I found in the article is that the speech bordered on boring to one gentleman.

Palin spoke to a full house in the main ballroom of Hong Kong’s Grand Hyatt hotel shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time.

Reporters were kept out by tight security at the investor forum organized by CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets.

Go Sarah.

More at link. I do find it hysterical that Palin gets criticized for potentially making money on a speaking engagement.

*cough* can anyone in the press say Clinton or Gore or Bush?

Who has done that?

Sarah Palin worries the Left and the women haters. She is genuine, loves her country and her family, and she wants to secure America's future, not destroy it. Palin, Huckabee, Pawlenty, Romney and Pence will be drawing big crowds in the future, because people are fed up with the Lies, Deceit, and disregard for Human rights by the Left!!!!! John Kyl is correct...These proposals and bills, are a TOTAL ASSAULT ON LIBERTY!!!!

Why in the heck don't these crazy Democrats talk to the Republicans who have some totally workable plans for Healthcare!!!

She had every right to speak from her own American perspective, about freedoms and liberties. Those are important principles on which our country was founded and I am proud of our noble heritage.

She didn't get clobbered by little Katie. Way to fall for tricky editing. Again, after being savaged by rumors and a malicious press, it's makes plenty of sense for this private citizen to screen questions ahead of time. Otherwise she might be asked a lot of stupid personal questions about her family.

Great Article in Market Watch.

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Sarah Palin, former U.S. Republican vice-presidential nominee, addressed a packed ballroom of mostly high-flying fund managers at a five-star hotel in Hong Kong Wednesday -- on issues ranging from the Alaskan fishing industry to the financial crisis to Sino-U.S. relations.

The trip was the first to Asia by Palin, and her first major appearance since stepping down as governor of Alaska in July. The address was made to an audience of fund managers and other financial professionals. Reporters were barred from attending.

"I'm going to call it like I see it and I will share with you candidly a view right from Main Street, Main Street U.S.A.,'' Palin was cited as saying by the Associated Press, which said it had seen a video recording of part of the speech.

"And how perhaps my view of Main Street ... how that affects you and your business," Palin's speech reportedly continued.

Palin was reportedly paid a sum in the low six figures to appear at the five-day conference organized by Hong Kong-based brokerage, CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets.

Previously the conference has attracted Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Alan Greenspan via satellite.

Palin also reportedly said the world financial crisis was the result of government excesses and called for deregulation and tax cuts for U.S. businesses.

"We got into this mess because of government interference in the first place," The Wall Street Journal reported Palin as saying, citing a recording of the speech.

On the foreign policy front, Palin spoke of the importance of the global fight against terrorism and of finding ways to engage China as a global power.

She added that China "rightfully makes a lot of people nervous," the report said.

Media reports described the speech as wide-ranging, touching on issues from the rising U.S. budget deficit, the debate over proposed health-care reforms, the U.S. military's involvement in Afghanistan and China's role in global affairs.

In a description of her own political philosophy, Palin said she embraced "common-sense conservatism" and that the free market philosophies of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher were guides for how to get out of the current downturn.

"Liberalism holds that there is no human problem that government can't fix if only the right people are put in charge," The Journal reported Palin as saying.

Without referring to President Barack Obama by name, Palin indicated that his promise for change during the election hadn't materialized.

She added that his campaign policies were "utopian sounding" and that many Americans were asking whether bigger government was the change they were looking for.

In other comments related to the financial crisis, Palin said the Federal Reserve's low-interest-rate policy laid the groundwork for the global meltdown. She added that she opposed appointing the Fed as chief overseer of U.S. financial system risk.

She acknowledged the rise of India and China but said there was no need to envision Asia as dominated by any single country.

"I see a China that is stable and peaceful and prosperous," she said.

She also called for greater political openness in China.

"Many believed that with China liberalizing its economy, greater political freedom would follow, but that hasn't happened," The Journal reported Palin as saying. "The more open [China] is, the less we'll be concerned about the military buildup and its intentions."

Here are some excellent quotes about Palin's speech:

"It was almost more of a speech promoting investment in Alaska," he said, declining to be named. "As fund managers we want to hear about the United States as a whole, not just about Alaska. And she criticised Obama a lot but offered no solutions."

So - she failed to address the nation as a whole and she offered criticism, but no solutions. Par for her prior performances.

Two US delegates left early, with one saying "it was awful, we couldn't stand it any longer".

Ouch! Seems that she fails to connect...again!

"It was fairly right-wing populist stuff,' one US delegate said.

That's funny! More faux-populism from a right-wing hack!

And then to take only pre-screened questions is just hilarious! So much for the luminary of the right-wingers.

Huh? The only answers we've seen is the footage that was presented and in that footage she:

a) struggled to name a single Supreme Court decision that she was intereseted in

b) claimed that because she could "see Russia from Alaska" that she had some sort of foreign policy experience

c) could not name a single paper or journal or magazine that she read, instead saying "oh, you know, all of them! <wink>"

What a sad interview that was and it's clear that she has learned her lesson: don't open your mouth in an unscripted moment for embarrassment is sure to follow.

Again, she purposely chose not to name specific papers, and rightfully so, since many had been publishing personal rumors about her. She had already written at least one op-ed piece that had been published by a major east newspaper, so it wasn't like she didn't know the names of any publications.

You know full well that when the media is present all public speakers... particularly prominent and/or controversial speakers... must guard what the say or the media will take it out of context and distort it. She was speaking to international investors... they wanted to know what she thought, with complete frankness. And saying the Feds have made the recession worse is not Country bashing... that is a cold hard fact.

BTW... All the other speakers also spoke on the condition of media anonominity. All of them wanted the freedom to speak frankly, which is exactly what their client was paying for.

Even the NYT gave a fair appraisal of her speech. They mentioned she had a reputation for not being bright, but acknowledged she is bright.

LOL! Have you ever seen Obama take anything other than softballs? Mr. 57 states (with one more to go) cannot speak without a teleprompter. Did you hear the last speech he gave without one? I'm not sure if they are still up, but there were sites at the time that posted the uncut transcripts side-by-side with the edited transcript of the Gibson interview. There were instances where ABC not only edited out Palin's answer to a question entirely, they edited out Gibson's following question making it look like her answer to the second question was given to the first question. That, by the way, was a five hour interview; ABC showed about 45-50 minutes of it.

There were instances where ABC not only edited out Palin's answer to a question entirely, they edited out Gibson's following question making it look like her answer to the second question was given to the first question. That, by the way, was a five hour interview; ABC showed about 45-50 minutes of it.

I don't know if they are up either but I remember the side-by-sides. That is what I read. It was appalling at the editing. I would have liked to see the unedited video but ABC/NBC dared not show it. I also remember with Couric questions that were asked and they specifically edited out the answers because they made Sarah look reasonable instead of the far right nut job they wanted to paint her to be.

I never saw the transcripts of the Couric interview, but I believe it was about 3 hrs long. After the first edited showing (again, of only perhaps 45-50 minutes) all they did was show those two 15 second clips of her spacing out on the Supreme Court and newspaper questions. And when it comes right down to it, Palin's inability, when put on the spot, to come up with a specific answer to either of those pop questions was meaningless. I might buy into the Supreme Court question somewhat because they were discussing Roe v. Wade at the time, but who the hell cares which newspapers anyone reads. What kind of a stupid question was that anyway?

That is the condition for speaking at the UN General Assembly... ya gotta bash America or they boo ya off the podium. ;)
