I was doing a little reading last night, catching up on some stuff i've been absent from for a long time. I read that there was a change a while ago when the USMC was looking for a 1500m sniper rifle. The Army simply decided to use a .50 caliber for long range sniping, but nothing hinted that the Marines were using anything other than the .308 even though they were looking. The article was regarding the .338 Lapua round, but again, no definitive remarks about the USMC switching out to that.
A long time ago, I remember reading about the .338, but the special forces (Army) was testing the .300 winmag. It apparently didn't meet the penetration requirements and that's kind of where I left off. I heard rumors that they were testing the .30/06 again too, but again, I didn't hear much after that.
Was there a shift to a new round?
