We spend inordinate amounts of time debating and protesting. That's good! It's what sets the United States apart from so much of the world. However, sometimes when we argue the relative merits of this proposal or that legislation we play right into the enemies hands. No, not the Democrats or the Republicans. I'm talking about those that seek to steal our liberty and to control our lives.
Who are these people? Well many reside on the radical left, while others on the extreme right. There isn't much difference between trying to stop me from smoking a cigar and attempting to prevent me from watching a a certain movie. Both infringe upon my rights and are perpetrated by people that can't deal with others not living the way they choose to. Still, those attempts are easily seen and deflected. We face far more insidious attacks on our liberty by those who aren't satisfied with simply forcing their lifestyle on you and me.
We've seen them before throughout history. Yes, Lenin, Hitler, Mao and many, many more. They didn't want to save you from yourself or some evil influence; they wanted absolute control of your life. They started small with a populist message, promising some kind of utopia. They preyed upon the weak-minded and the disenchanted, playing on people's fears. In the end it was always the same, subjugation, servitude and slavery to the State.
"Why does this matter now?", you may ask. Do you really think this health care debate is about health care? Cap and Trade about the environment? Taxing the rich about generating revenue? These are means to and end, ways to slowly seduce you and I into believing that the Government can and should take care of everything. Ways to strike fear in our hearts and feel malice toward our countrymen. Ways to divide and conquer. Ways to steal our freedom and liberty and replace it with chains and shackles.
It is about control. Control over your money, your lifestyle, your property and your very life! A system where the State owns you, makes your decisions, tells you how to live and, all to often, when to die. Our Founding Fathers left such a place, England, and came here for freedom. Some for freedom of religion, others freedom of expression, others just plain old freedom from tyranny. The created this great nation of free men where each of us is responsible for our own life, liberty and pursuit of happiness and then they warned us to be ever vigilant.
They knew that freedom was fragile and must be defended. They knew others like King George would attempt to steal it away. But here we are on the precipice, looking at a Federal Government out of control. It ignores the Constitution that created it. It disregards the people that elected it. It is seeking control!
Thankfully, we still have the Constitution. We can use it against them. In 2010 we can vote and change our government. The Founding Fathers knew a little revolution now and then was essential and gave us a way to change our government without bloodshed. We just have to have the intestinal fortitude to do so and then demand that the new government take its proper role. I doesn't matter what party you are registered with if you are a patriot. Vote for a candidate that supports the ideals of liberty, personal responsibility and limited government. Unless we do this, we may one day wake up to find that our opportunity is gone and the State is in control.
