View Full Version : South Carolina Mayor Rules On Police Foot Chases

Mayor Peek has said "Officers will no longer be allowed to chase anyone on foot, let them go". That's weird! I just heard this Mayor interviewed on CNN, so I don't have all the information on the city & such. Can you imagine how many thieves will now move there to get free movement?

Apparently! I've chased many thieves & other criminals in my time, I've never heard of that.

"You got you a story, thank God! You are so sweet! You got you a story on a woman in Wellford! Hallelujah! I'm so proud of you," she told the reporter Friday, clapping.

Peake said she issued the order after the town had to pay workers compensation for an officer out of work several days for chasing a "guy who had some crack on him _ a piece of crack on him."

"There was no crime, no such thing as a crime," Peake said. "If he was breaking into somebody's house, to me that would be a crime, or if he was stealing something. ... I wish they would get whoever's selling it. Then that would be worth chasing somebody down for."

I heard the audio while i was in the car but can't seem to find it, you should hear her lol

Hilarious. A private individual is legally allowed to chase a perpetrator on foot for the rightful repossession of personal property, but I guess an officer of the law won't be, for any reason. LOL

Maybe now when Cops say "Stop or I'll Shoot" now they'll actually open fire. Shot criminals are pretty easy to find.

How are you to enforce the law and catch the bad guys if you're reduced to basically a public service aid with a gun?

I got injured tackling a subject last month and had to go on workmans comp for a few weeks when my shoulder separated and dislocated.

My Mayor didn't release a memo about not being allowed to Tackle people though.

It's a high risk job they want us to do and then we get chastised for getting injured? That mayor probably shouldn't seek re-election.

This dumb liberal ought to take her own advice when it comes to her re-election... DON'T RUN!!

There once was a Mayor named Sallie,
Who ordered the cops to all dally.
she's stopped all the chases,
so it's off to the races,
lets start up the fast felony rally!

I think a physical fitness program for the officers (and driving lessons) would be in order, not banning chases.

Is this even legal for her to do?

She cannot make the law, she's just a mayor.

Law enforcement is tasked to the Executive Branch so her office is in charge of city law enforcement as a Mayor. Some cities are set up differently with an elected Chief of Police but it doesn't appear to be the case here.

No, she can't legally. There are State Laws & there are City Ordinances, all which are enacted by the "Legislature or City Council". However, check out the Mayor of SF. He's declared SF a "sanctuary city". He will not arrest any criminals, who are wanted by the law, or illegals & he gets away with it.

Actually, being that she's the mayor (part of the executive branch of government), she is ostensible in charge of the city's police force (also the executive branch of government), and therefore can instruct the police to carry out their duties however she likes (in reasonable fashion).

Here is my $ .02

Just as state governments cannot interfere with the discharge of federal laws in the same fashion local municipal/county governments cannot interfere with the discharge of state laws. While it is true that the Mayor has directional control of the police force there is sort of a gray area in that local law enforcement officers are sworn to uphold the Constitution and state laws. As someone implied earlier mayors do have reasonable control over police forces in general but if an mayoral order such as this one cripples the law enforcement from reasonably upholding state laws and the Constitution than the Mayor is stepping out of jurisdiction. From what I understand the County Sheriff the town is in is basically appealing to state level authorities in reference to this matter. I don't know how it works in South Carolina but maybe the county sheriff and local DA should go in front of a judge and ask the judge to overturn this Mayors mandate because it basically is inconsistent with the ability of the officers to uphold state laws. I imagine their are state laws that mandate police forces for certain size towns that are incorporated.

That is because the federal government for some reason will not crack down on sanctuary cities. But rest assured that if the feds wanted to they could stop these sanctuary city practices.

She's probably tight with Cynthia McKenney & Maxine Waters. There isn't a productive brain cell between all three.

Officers are hurting themselves in foot chases. My guess is that a physical fitness program would reduce injuries (which is the reason the mayor said that chases have been banned). Also, several of the officers were injured in car accidents, hence the need for better driver training.

Maybe the mayor owns the local gun store and this is her way to increase
sales of weapons for personal protection.

They get what they deserve.

Last time I checked NFL players were in great shape, well except some of the fat lineman. Yet they get hurt all the time making tackles. Do you think a footchase is like flag football where you touch the guy and he gives up. No you tackle them, sometimes taser, and you go crashing to the ground with them. And sometimes you get hurt. An out of shape cop is actually much less likely to get hurt simply because they won't catch the guy in the first place.

If this is a "weak mayor" system then the council, not the mayor, has control, and can override her.

I'd think an out of shape cop would have more guys run. The whole perp mentality is based on opportunity and if they think they have an opportunity to outrun Officer Rotundo then they're gonna make a break for it.

That kind of ruins the deterrent effect of police presence if the cops are unfit for duty, I'd say.

WhiteHatBobby should quit giving into stereotypes based on TV perceptions.

By in large cops are in better shape than your average citizen. Oh for sure there are out of shape ones, there are at any given time 1,000,000 cops nationwide so naturally you'll always be able to find some, but overall they are in good shape.
