By total coincidence (I am a member of Netflix) I happened to get "The Towering Inferno" in the mail on Friday, 9/11.

In the commentary on the DVD, the film historian mentioned that part of the inspiration for Irwin Allen to make this film (besides the two books, "The Tower" and "The Glass Inferno.") was the fact that the World Trade Center was under construction (at that time). The film came out in 1974.

In fact, there is a heavy emphasis on fire safety in the film, and how those constructing these buildings don't consider that safety enough in making these buildings.

Ironic when you consider that they had weakened the safety code for buildings in NY, and they no longer required a concrete box around the steel girders. They instead sprayed fire retardent material on the steel. Most of which was immediately brushed off when the planes hit, leaving the steel naked to the fire.

Although the building does not fall in "The Towering Inferno" the film with all it's flaws seems somehow prophetic. I guess Irwin Allen didn't just make successful cheesy disaster movies, he could see a problem in the making.

Let's remember the final line by Steve McQueen:

You know we were pretty lucky tonight, body count's less then 200. You know, one of these days, you're gonna kill ten-thousand in one of these firetraps, and I'm gonna keep eating smoke and carrying out bodies until someone asks us... how to build them.

That's really creepy.

I remember all of those disaster movies. Watching that particular one again would be difficult to do. Who would have thought that something from the cheesy 70's movies could be sort of prophetic.

The movie China Syndrome release date March 16 1979
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078966/

The Three Mile Island accident began at 4:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 29, 1979.

Watched a special on this the other night on a program called 10 Movies That Shaped History.

In the program they claimed that before these two events there were collectively 1000 nuclear power plants being planned, being approved, or under construction in America but that today there are less than 100.

Yes. I always enjoyed that particular movie, although, I was not a fan of the other disaster films like "The Poseidon Adventure." However, I always enjoyed the Towering Inferno. It's ironic, I got the film in my netflix queue on that particular day.

After hearing the commentary for the film, the last line by McQueen definitely struck me as a prophetic warning.

Well to be fair, I doubt the WTC could of collapsed from a generator fire. Two jumbo jets slammed into it first.

In what would have been a "normal" fire situation in either of the towers I do not believe there would have been but a very small loss of life if any.

A jumbo jet intentionally flown into the tower compared to an equipment fire is not a fair comparison.
