Lawmakers: Get ACORN Out Of Georgia

ATLANTA -- Citing a pattern of indictments, convictions, and widespread accusations of corruption, several Georgia lawmakers say it's time to rid the state of the group known as ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations and Reform Now.

Gov. Sonny Perdue issued an order on Thursday blocking state agencies from doing business with the organization. The lawmakers say local governments and community groups should do the same.

"The fact of the matter is whether you're Republican, Democrat, Liberal or Conservative," said Majority Leader Chip Rogers, "you should be absolutely disgusted by the activities of this organization; you should disavow them and step away."

In the aftermath of a videotape, purportedly showing an ACORN worker trying to help a couple posing as pimp and hooker get over on the system, outrage is growing against ACORN.

"Their past history is bad enough but the recent allegations and the recent evidence that we have seen on the videotape falls in the category of reprehensible," said Rogers. "This organization obviously has its tentacles far beyond just trying to mess with elections clearly they're involved in other activities that have no place in Georgia."

So far the lawmakers say they've only identified about 100-thousand dollars in funds going to ACORN through the state, all of it federal money in a program that will end in two weeks.

"We're calling today for the governor's office and state agencies to work to identify contracts with ACORN and its affiliates and freeze spending immediately on these contracts," said Rep. Ed Setzler (R-District 35) "until it can be ascertained the use and integrity of the dollars being used in these contracts."

ACORN's only office in Atlanta has since closed.
The organization's web site says it has taken steps to renew the public's confidence, but many believe it's too little too late.
