I befriended an older lady last week, and we exchanged numbers. I doubt she does the text thing, but I've been putting off calling her(to see how she's doing) b/c I'm afraid I may interupt her in the middle of something. Maybe I've just become too dependent on texts and email?!

Okay, if you don't have any problem talking with the elderly lady and the apprehension is all a worry about disturbing her then don't let that stop you.
If I had a nickel for every time my elderly mother has lamented that "no one calls her" I could have chartered a Bus and bused people to the 9-12 rally.
I don't know what this ladies situation is but my mother has an ever shrinking list of people or family she can interact with and it bothers her and any outside interference in the form of communication is a Godsend for her.
(I don't count as outside communication, I am too close, and I am not female so lack a very important perspective)
Just my thoughts.

I still talk on the phone. Email and texting is less personable. You can't hear the vocal inflections that give the spoken word such power and emotion.

Nor as many people calling!! = emailing including looking for job... they emaill me for interview.
Not a chit chat person per say. I have a job when I find one a professional on the phone many of hours!! I study bike walk spend time out doors.
Our grown sons call us older son's wife expecting twins so he calls weekly or he has a question.
When the phone lights up and it's older son or any son, phone is picked up. Twins will be soon next month. grand daughter small not quite 2.

I talk to my kids on the phone several times a week, and occasionally for business, but I've never been a fan of the phone, rarely pick up my cell phone except to recharge it. Love e-mail - love being able to get my communication done between when I get the first cup of coffee and when the dogs get their early walk.

Same here. I'm not a fan of the phone, I used to be though. I usually get called when I'm in the middle of something or when i don't feel like talking, so i just assume it's that way w/ everyone else.

I've never really liked the phone even as a teenager but I do understand the need to call the elderly woman. Even if it's for a few minutes, it will mean the world to her I'm sure. To be honest, if she's like some of the older folks I know, if she's in the middle of something, she WILL let you know. LOL

Absolutely have always used the phone, and it's my primary contact with the universe. I use it all of the time at home. Cell phone, only when I absolutely need to, have never texted anything in my life. Email only for a specific purpose (see this article, see this picture).
My friends and family are all in different states. I don't get to see them very often. Ergo, our most frequent personal contact is by phone.
In the context of an older woman, call her whenever, just not too early or too late because you never know what sort of sleeping habits that they have. Other than that, rock on.

I use text, email, Facebook and Twitter a lot, but nothing beats actual face time.
I can't read someone's body language and reactions if I can't see them.

My whole day is spent sitting in front of email at work...so I rarely email on a personal level, except through Facebook.
I text alot because some things just don't need to be said voice to voice. Me and my brother text throughout the day....mostly things like "Did you hear Patrick Swayze died?" or "Can you believe that catch that Granderson just made?". That kind of stuff is fine in text form.
I do talk on the phone. Not as much as I probably could, probably because if I am calling for a reason, I don't have alot of time to chic chat....and calling on the phone always leads to chit chat.
