View Full Version : Thumbs Down To Gretchen Carlson On Fox News

This is a pet peeve type rant.
Hero Sgt. Jared Monti was killed during a gunfight against the Taliban in Afghanistan in June 2006.
This morning Gretchen has been reporting that President Obama is going to be "handing out" the Medal of Honor to Sgt. Jared Monti's family.
Gretchen my dear, love or hate for the President aside, our President's do not "hand out" Medals of Honor.
Tiara's and bouquets of roses may be "handed out" when one wins a silly beauty contest.
Medals of Honor are "awarded" and then "presented" by our Presidents to America's ultimate heroes.
All too often the Medals are presented posthumously, to family members, because the recipients have sacrificed their lives in the deeds earning this great honor.
Such is the case with recipient Sgt. Jared Monti.
Show some respect Gretchen.

Not a fan of Gretchen myself.
I did not see it, did she say "hand out" on purpose? Or did she just say misspeak?

simply that "a pet peeve", if you think she met any malice, or disrespect you should have your head examined.

She said it multiple times, I don't think she was firing for effect, she was just sloppily disrespectful.

I have long thought I should have my head examined, but they don't think I should.
No not with malice, done with sloppiness or laziness, perhaps, but none the less grating to hear it put that way.

or just plain ole ignorance, it happens sometimes. The people on F&F are a buch of boobs, they can be entertaining, but they know nothing about the military. I would have expected nothing more out of them to be honest with you. Gretchen is on there more for bitching about social issues and reporting news, I wouldnt take anything she says with any deeper meaning.

If Lou is former military I guess I can relate to his feelings. I grew up military and married into it. They will always have 'pet peeves' that most of us will never 'get' or understand. There are certain programs that if I watch around hubby(the ones where they are in uniform or holding a weapon, or saluting etc) all i will hear is his negative commentary such as...''that's not how it's done'', ''we don't do that'', that's not how you salute, etc etc. He probably would have been peeved to at Greta. Me? I woulda just chalked it up as another civvie who wasn't taught the proper wording/phrases. It's not their fault.

Can they just cancel F&F and let Megyn Kelly and Bill Hemmer's show run for the entire morning? :D

My take on this: I'm biased, I like Fox News Channel. I don't think they're as right wing as the libs accuse them of but, I definitely think they're more conservative than any other network. The support/respect they show all branches of service is second to none. With that in mind, I don't think it's too much to ask for them to do just a tiny bit of research and get something like this right.
The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award that can possibly be given to a soldier, sailor, airman or marine. The respect it deserves is indescribable. To use such "common" terminology in describing the presentation of this award does both the award and Fox News a grave disservice.

More Megyn Kelly is always a good idea.
Bill Hemmer does nothing for me, but he is a fair talking head.
I miss E.D. Hill off Fox & Friends.

Doubly so when it is awarded posthumously.
I think she was going off teleprompters so it likely was copy written by another but she could (and should) have corrected it.

Eh, maybe. I'm not too up on journalistic responsibilities but, I have a feeling that the on air "talent" is nothing but a bunch of pretty faces and empty heads. (Some prettier and more empty than others.) It's the folks that put the words on that teleprompter that I'd hold more responsible.
That's not to say that if I were the talking head in question I'd blindly go on air and read whatever they threw at me. I'd like to think I have enough integrity and personal responsibility to do a little of my own research, thus protecting myself. Didn't any of them learn a lesson from Mr. Rather?

We all know that as far as Fox and CNN are concerned looks and image of a person is more important than any ability.
Not that I am complaining because the females on Fox wear much shorter skirts than their female counterparts over on CNN - Call me shallow but nothing like a nice piece of eye candy while they are discussing the latest tragedy.

Both are peopled with some very good talent.
Morning news magazine type variety shows at the various networks are not geared for the type of audience desires that one might find in a Sunday afternoon news program audience.
Not that I am complaining because the females on Fox wear much shorter skirts than their female counterparts over on CNN - Call me shallow but nothing like a nice piece of eye candy while they are discussing the latest tragedy.
I think many people like easy flowing, attractive, friendly, fun, non intimidating wake up programs such as Fox & Friends.
Nice gams certainly helps hold the male audience, no doubt about that.

It's alright Lou, if I wrote to them there'd be people in dark sunglasses (it's never sunny in Manchester;)) at my door and I'd never be seen again....:))....
No, I just think emailing TV Networks with complaints is doomed to failure, but emailing praise? Totally different response......
By the way, the dark sunglasses remark was just a joke........

I expect that is was misspeaking out of ignorance... exactly like when people say that the Constitution "gives" us rights.

I'll second that... I particularly enjoy the aggressiveness the hormones of pregnancy have produced in her already feisty personality. I thought she was going to pop Lis Wiehl on the nose when Lis went all "liberal" on her the other night on O'Rielly. ;)

It's not the Congressional Medal of Honor, just the Medal of Honor.
Since the Civil War, 40% of Medals awarded have been posthumous. This statistic is low because during the Civil War, they were given out much more freely than today. All Medals awarded for actions since Vietnam have been posthumous.
Fox dropped the ball here. I don't think it was a matter of disrespect, but it certainly wasn't the proper respect for the Medal.
Those who have been awarded the Medal of Honor are always saluted first--even by general officers. It is not simply "handed out."

I made a similar mistake when I started a thread about the ceremony on the AAW forum. http://forums.hannity.com/showthread.php?t=1650421 I meant no disrespect. It was the President who actually handed the medal to his parents, but your right the proper language would be that the President presented the award. Not serving in the military for any length of time, I am admittedly not as informed as I should be.

What ****es me off is the numbnuts who say he "won" the medal. NO dip****, he earned the medal by taking actions to save others which cost him his life. It was not a contest in which he came in first place.

Also while on this topic I remember hearing a story as a child of a soldier during WWII who refused to ever fire his rifle, he was a hero though and was awarded the medal of honer. http://history.amedd.army.mil/moh/dossd.htm

I haven't served, tried to enlist in San Diego in 1985 but was refused because I had clubbed feet.
I have known career service members and non career service members all my life as far back as I can remember.
I had several great uncles serve in WWII, in both theaters , an uncle who did two tours in Vietnam, and my biological father was a tank crewman in Korea, and not too long ago a grandson that had lived with us for many years who did a tour in Iraq, all joined the military voluntarily, so I have a good respect for those who serve with honor.

I also have great respect for them. Maybe I don't always choose the right words when describing an event, but that doesn't change the fact that I have a great deal of respect for them.
I also tried to enlist, but never made it through recruit training because of an eye infection.
