My cousin is in Germany right now, living on base while her husband is deployed in Afganistan. She got a call from one of the officers there on base to say he's coming to see her but not to be alarmed.
He gets there and tells her that there was a rather fierce firefight that her husbands unit was involved in when they were attacked, but that they have confirmed that he is ok. He went on to update her as much as he could or what not and then left.
I just thought it was really cool that they will come to the spouse or parent or whomever and give updates like that and especially nice that he called her ahead of time so that she wouldn't have that 30 seconds of tread from the time he pulled up to the time he got to the door with whatever news.
