He's both. I feel bad for Beyonce being put in that position, but she handled it with grace and class by bringing Taylor back to the stage later in the evening. As far as Kanye, his racist stripes once again were on display for all to see... just like after Katrina when he proclaimed that "Bush hates black people" even though white people were displaced by Katrina also.
