With the release of Windows7 just a month or so off. What seems to be the take on whether it will be better or worse than WinXP or Vista? I have a friend that is a Microsoft Beta tester and he seems to really like the Window7 and feels that it run better and with less RAM hogging than Vista does. Any thoughts?

I've used it briefly at work. We have MSDN licensing. Its not bad....definitely better then Vista.

I'll wait until Service Pack 1 comes out before buying it though... :)

It's definitely better than Windows Vista. Some UI improvements with the start menu, the performance is not nearly as bad (ie, my hard disk doesn't constantly churn like it did with Windows Vista). Most applications from Vista also run on Windows 7 just fine.

Basically, Windows 7 is probably what Vista should have been when it was released.

Are the drivers that are compatible with Vista compatible with Windows7. That was such a pain with Vista at the beginning.

Generally speaking, if the drivers work in Vista they will work in Win 7.

I happen to be running XP, Vista 64 bit, and Win 7 64 bit on this system. The only reason I even have XP on here is because I'm a beta tester for HyperOS, which is the software that allowes me to use multiple MS Operating Systems. If it wasn't for that I would not have XP on here. Vista, and Win 7 are both SO much better. I'm using Win 7 RC 1 as my primary system OS, and I like it even better than I like Vista

One thing Vista does better than Win 7 is SUPERFETCH. WIn 7 isn't as 'agressive' in pre-loading applications as Vista. I think MS scaled that back because of so many people just didn't understand what Superfetch is, how it works. ALl they say was that just after booting that their HDD showed a lot of activity, and that if they looked at their memory usage it seemed that Vista was 'hogging' all of their memory. 'doing it's thing', whichis pre-loading as many of the applications that you use frequently into memory so that they are available when you want to use them, rather than going to the HDD, and bringing them in when you ask for them. It does make a big difference in how 'snappy' Vista feels. Especially if you have a lot of RAM.

As for waiting for SP1 for Win 7 to come out before you move to it? I'd say that you are doing yourself a dis-service. Win 7 RC 1 is almost flawless, and the RTM will be better.

For all of the bad publicity that Vista got, it really wasn't because "Vista sucked", it was because drivers from people like nVidia, Creative, and others sucked.

Those people FINALLY got their acts together, and Vista drivers are now pretty mature, and with Win 7 being able to use the same drivers, people aren'te blaming Win 7 for things that isn't it fault, like they did with Vista.

Unless you have VERY old hardware, I'd highly recommend Windows 7. Even then it may supprise you. I just put Win 7 32-bit on an ASUS EEE 900 Netbook, (Celeron 900mhz CPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD) and it runs better now than it did with the original XP install.

Fellow Cincinnatian, we'll just have to agree to disagree. ;)

From your comments, Windows7 really looks good. Do you think a clean install of Windows7 is the way to go or will an upgrade from Vista be ok? BTW, what is this HyperOS software you mentioned? Would allow any OS such as Win98 etc. to be installed as well as Windows7?

I have used it in my laptop and it is a big improvement in the security and nag screen department over Vista. They have a big half price sale going on in the preorder departement at MS.

I still turned off UAC, but it isn't nearly as annoying as it was in Vista.

Windows 7 IS really good. Better than Vista (especially for lower end systems), and LIGHT YEARS ahead of XP.

I would recommend doing a clean install. I installed Win 7 both ways. A clean install on an open partition, and upgrading from a Vista install on another partition. I just liked the results much better with the clean install.

The latest version of HyperOS (2009TE) will allow you to install any combination of Windows 2K, XP, Vista, Server 2003/2008, and Windows7, including the 64 bit versions.

I currently have 4 Vista 64 bit partitions, 2 Win 7 64 bit partitions, and 1 XP 32 bit partition. I have two other partitions that I keep 'open'. I use them to make a copy of any of the other partitions to test out any software that may 'hose' the OS. That way if the software DOES hose the OS, I still have the original one to use while figuring out what happened in the test partition.

My genius nephew (he's 19 and I swear was born with a mother board attached to him...lol) says that since he's down loaded Micro 7.(works on campus UNR IT support program for the whole school)..he confident that I'll like it much better then XP..and waaaayyy more user friendly and software compatible then Vista. Thus far, he's not found anything worth complaining about..and has given it a thumbs up...1 through 10 rating...Micro 7 gets an 8. Not bad...maybe they finally got something right?

Once it comes out...I believe it's December this year it comes out...I will be switching both home computers to the new OS.

Windows 7 will be released on October 22.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/home?os=nonwin7

I have 2 copies of Vista Home Premium pre-ordered. A 64 bit version for my desktop, and a 32 bit version for my netbook.

One final bit of advice. If you have a 64 bit processor in your system you should definately buy/install the 64 bit version of Windows 7. Don't cripple it by running a 32 bit OS (with it's RAM limitations) with it.

That's comforting to hear... I am holding off replacing my 5 year old (or is it 6?) computer because I do not want to deal with Vista (I use XP and have no particular complaints about it.) But that said... I will wait until the first wave of 7 hits the streets... I have been burned by Microsoft too many times to trust them right off the starting blocks.

I can't wait. Vista is a road bump like Windows ME was
