I took this quick quiz and it got me just right:

http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have

I'm from Chicago, and it pegged me as "Middle north" and even mentioned Chicago in the results.

How accurate is it for you?

Pretty damn accurate. I am from Lower Michigan the land of no accents.

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

Result Breakdown:
100% The Inland North
80% The Midland
76% The Northeast
73% Philadelphia
65% The South
33% The West
19% Boston
15% North Central

It was right on for me as well...

Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I do wonder, however, if these quizzes realize that people in Southern parts of Indiana and Ohio have slight Southern accents....and people from the LP of Michigan have no accent, where people in the UP almost have a Minnesota/Canadian accent....

I'm not taking the quiz but I was born in the midwest, lived in the south/southwest, and have lived in the north since 13 years old. I can speak with any of those accents and fit right in. In fact, often when I visit my relatives to the south, I just automatically revert to the accent.

I don't think I have actually heard a Philly accent before......what do you sound like? Is it a less severe New York/Jersey type accent?

I do tend to pick up a slight accent when I travel...you should hear me when I go South. And to this day I say y'all. :D

You're correct on the Indiana and Ohio accents Ski. Go just across the border into KY and they definately talk with a southern draw.

I am always suprised that the southern portions of those states are lumped in with the rest. My family in Columbus all have the Southern drawl..makes me a little jealous since I have no accent to speak of.

Since you are in Cinci you have a slight accent as well, I would think. Right?

I haven't been out of this area much, so I've never been told I have a specific accent.

I DO accents though...I've got a pretty good Canadian/Minnesotan, a decent southern, and I did a Brooklyn accent for a show once.

Pretty accurate:

The West - Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta

Native Californian; I've been told more than once that I don't have an accent, and it seems to throw some people off, especially in the south, where they can't figure out where I'm from...

I haven't taken the quiz, but if "the South" is lumped into one accent, then the quiz-writer doesn't know his/her accents.

There is no single "southern" accent.

You're right about that.
Some of answers people have gotten are fairly specific regionaly speaking.
If we get a couple of southerns taking the quiz we'll see how good the quiz is in that region.

That's a Southern accent you've got there. You may love it, you may hate it, you may swear you don't have it, but whatever the case, we can hear it.

It stated that I have a Midland accent, but southern was almost equal. I would say I generally have a southern or Texas drawl. However, I think I have probably spent too much time in schools to not distinguish between most of the words given, where there is a dictionary pronunciation.

I got "Midland". Interesting that it refers to it as "no accent". I have been concentrating on a career change recently as a voice actor (commercials, industrial training film narration, etc.) and casting directors have pegged me as originally being from the Seattle area. They say I have virtually no accent, but they can "hear Seattle" when I speak.

One of the few problems I have with Chicago is that it's hard to get a proper cheesesteak here.
