Just bought a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee today, and wondered if there is anyone with some insight to these rigs. Any problem areas, common issues or just any information that could bring me up to speed with this thing.

Current known problems: coolant sensor faulty, rear brake failure indication on the dash computer, (all lights work except the center cyclops has one out), front axle seals and/or cv boots torn, minor oil leak and bad steering stabilizer; 5.2 v8, loaded so its a nice rig overall.

Thanks

I had a '95 Grand Cherokee. I really enjoyed driving it and it was a great vehicle - but it did have some quirks and problems.

The one area where I spent the most of my maintenance dollars was the brakes. A mechanic told me that Cherokees had a design flaw in the brake system going back to their introduction that was never corrected. Conversely owners ended up spending a good deal maintaining the systems.

The other interesting thing and from what I understand is common to all Jeeps of that era is that somehow transmission fluid can leak onto the manifold when the engine is under pressure and you end up trailing huge plumes of white smoke behind your vehicle. Mine was always going uphill with the AC running and I got to where I would cut off the AC if I knew it was about to gear down going up a hill.

 That explains the smell!

I will see if I can find a fix for that. Thanks

My mechanic told me it didn't really hurt anything - other than burning a little transmission fluid. He explained it to me once, but I forgot what he said - something about a badly designed seal.

Ahhh, just like my classic mustang, similar deal.
