Well, the Raiders just became contenders. That shouldn't be too difficult. With the exception of the NFC North, the AFC West is the weakest division in the league.

I still don't think that they are contenders, unfortunately, unless a whole lot of things go right, and that hasn't exactly been the case lately.
While this trade does address a long-standing problem that the Raiders have had, the inability to stop the run, it also showcases why the two teams are in the respective places that they are: the Raiders traded away the second round pick that could have been used to select Brace, to New England, who is now using Brace to replace Seymour. The Raiders had the chance to select the younger, cheaper replacement, and instead have given up a first-rounder for the player felt to be expendable, admittedly not for poor play, but for the cost of retaining him.
The Raiders will have to re-sign long-term Seymour for this to not be a wasted trade, and that will cost them much more than it would than if they had selected Brace to begin with... The only possible good thing is that if the team improves as Al obviously believes that it can, the pick may not be a high one.

It appears that Richard Seymour may not be too excited with the prospects of playing for the Raiders.

I can't say that I can blame him.

One day, Al Davis' receptionist will tell him Bill Belichick is holding on line one and Davis will not take the call. Until that day, if it ever comes, the Pats will continue to work Davis like a chump.

I think Seymour is worth a first round pick if the Raiders can get him resigned for 4-5 more years. Of course that is a big if and at this point doesnt appear very likely.

No variables, the trade looks good for oakland. Variables, Seymour has been a 3-4 end for most of his career. Raiders have Kelly and Warren. Does Seymour move inside or stay at end? Seymour has battled injuries for the last few seasons. Seymour was not happy bout this trade. Maybe it works out, but seems to me the Pats cut salary, got younger, and picked up a first.

I would suspect he plays DT, and I would think he would be right behind Haynesworth and Harris as the best 4-3 DT in the NFL. The injuries and things of that nature are certainly a concern, but the biggest priority has to be to get him signed. Obviously they could franchise him, so they will likely at least have him two years (or get something back in a trade for him), but if I were giving up a first round pick Id at least want a 5 year deal workedout.

Poor chap.
I bet he thinks the Bengals or Browns would have been more desirable.

Sure did Buffalo. They could get a pretty darn good pick.

Knowing Oakland, I'd bet top five, which the Pats will trade for a bottom five and two seconds, all of whom will end up contributors. But that's just going by recent history.

Seymour still hasn't shown up in Oakland. In the reports I read, Tom Cable said that he had spoken to Seymour and that Richard had told him that he was looking forward to playing for the Raiders. Someone is evidently lying here.

He has five days to report; if or when he doesn't at that point, it will be a story. Until then, specualtion and conjecture...
