Grand Theft Auto of course!
It may be a bit too liberal and overly satirizes the US, but it is still freaking funny.

Old SuperNES RPG's way back in the day (New Horizons was a fave as well as the original Resident Evil). I enjoy flight simulators, FS2004. FSX is awesome if you have a top end machine (not me) so I settle with FS2004.

I haven't gamed in a while. Last serious gaming I did was MMORPG's - I was a guild head in EVE Online, and played around with Anarchy Online. Learned somethings about leadership, learned a lot more about gamers as a community, including much I never wanted to know.

All on the Vista 64 bit OS. Nothing wrong with Vista. I have found it to be more stable and problem free than XP SP3. Of course, I am running it on decent hardware: AMD Phenom II X4 940, 8 GB RAM, ATI 3870 X2. That does help :)

playing civilization 4 with a game I saved 2 years ago and I'm still the eminent superpower in that world and have influence over other nations and have control of 98% of that world's resources and my treasury already has 500,000+ gold
right now, I'm mostly into combat arms online! just love hunting and shooting other players  I especially love being in free-for-all scenarios where you can kill everyone especially with only 5 players in that arctic background and I get to hunt and kill players by my knife or machete surprising them from behind (or shoot them point-blank)... I also love to shoot other players with my sniper rifle... god I just love the feeling especially when the 'head shot' message pops up lol  i love it when I get to wear my helmet, goggles, face mask, and armor and I can withstand other players shooting at me  I love throwing around claymore mines and incendiary grenades and love to see when other players go through the blast and they run around burning LOL... still waiting for a new civilization game that is real-time. age of empires is quite limited in scope on what you can do. I wouldve loved age of empires if it was exactly like civilization in size and scope and your production capabilities (especially construction of nuclear ICBMs) are not hampered by population limits.
the thing I love about civ 4 is that it simulates real life scenario and the population decreases every now and then to represent people passing on because of disease (old age and other factors).
if a new civilization game is real-time like age of empires but retaining what we've loved with civilization and bringing back some of the elements that made the game interesting (like spies able to plant nuclear devices in cities or poison the water supply and you can give your surplus military equipment to other countries), then you'd have an almost perfect strategy game...

hehehe... well I play at the easiest leve because if I played at a higher level, especially moderate to deity, my development would always get hampered by attacking civs and restless barbarians. so although the moderate to deity levels are challenging, there's just no way I'd get to be a superpower at the higher levels so I go play with the chieftain level.
with barbarian activity, I also put that at the easiest level or maybe random. but I prefer to just keep them quiet.
with the kind of game I play, I always make it a point to make my world young and huge with temperate atmosphere. I choose America always because you get the F-15 advance later in the game. I also choose a map divided by archipelagos because you have a higher chance of ending up in a continent all by yourself or in a continent just occupied by only one other civ that you can wipe out during the game and the continent is all yours.
so after naming myself as the Emperor and naming my civ, I also make sure to get a feeling of where I'm at. with me, personally, I always like being located in the north at the beginning of the game and if I don't get that, I repeat the game until I get it. I don't know, I just like being located north because north tend to have cooler climates and an atmosphere that make people inventive and creative lol.
I also make it a point to get a feeling of the continent i'm in.

Ah-ha! I knew it! I rule when I play Warlord to Chieften levels too...the more levels I go up..the more I suck! lol. Won my last game..barely...at the level just below Princes. Hard won...and still got a low ranking evening though I won the game! Love those F-15's and Nukes ...favorite weapons of mine. lol
Barbarians....Arrrrgggghhhh....HATE THEM! Makes the game sooo much harder. So, I try to take them out of the game play in the beginning of a new game. Try your game play at a level or two up...then go back and start a Chieften or Warlord game ...tell ya what..makes for hell of a good game.

so I get a feel of my continent by sending one of my warriors on exploration. I don't normally send scouts because they're weak and are vulnerable. so if I have a free warrior at the beginning, I make it explore the continent and once I establish my city, make 5 more warriors, 2 for exploration and 3 to defend the city. but before you make warriors, make a settler first so you can establish your second city. this is the point where you save the game so you have the original world intact if you want to return to it later on.
so anyway, if the continent is occupied by 2 or more civs, I start the game again until I get the ideal continent. if there's only one civ but the continent doesn't appeal to me, I start the game again. I just have to have the ideal continent with only one other civ in that continent so that during the game, you are left in peace to produce, create and develop without anyone pestering or attacking you.
if I've done my exploration of the entire continent and it is the ideal one, then I proceed with the game. personally, I like a continent where the northern part is separated from the southern part by a single island so I can make that island my canal later on in the game so its easier and faster to move my navy across the world. so basically, that's the kind of world I play in lol.
at the beginning, what I do is create at least 50 cities as fast as you can. not only will these be your first original ancient cities, but they will also help complement each other so you can balance between creating your world wonders and creating a military that can effectively defend your cities. but since you've made sure you're in a continent that's

once you're in an ideal continent you know is all for your taking, you don't have to worry much about protecting your cities because you'll have your natural defenses. suggestion is at least station 3 defensive troops in each of your cities at the beginning, but always make sure to strike a balance between creating settlers and troops because you might end up with most of your cities stagnating and when that happens, production stops and you won't be able to create more cities and your empire will get stuck and will be a sitting duck. also be mindful of your treasury and make it a point your always growing. strike a balance between your taxation and science research so that you'll always have a net income. also be mindful of your citizen's reactions because the taxation often produces angry citizens that can rise up and hamper production in any of your city.
at the beginning also, start creating wonders of the world. in my game, I have created all of the wonders of the world with the exception of st. bach's cathedral which the french created first. well I invaded that city later on so now I have all the wonders of the world. if you produce leaders, you can make them rush to complete a world wonder.
as far as resources are concerned, obviously at the beginning of the game you will be forced to use the resources that come up on your continent. but as the game progresses and more or less you know the trajectory of your empire (whether it is powerful militarily and economically), then you can gradually cut off your roads from these resources and conserve them. right now what I do is if I needed oil to build tanks, fighter, and all the other equipment

so when I need oil to make military equipment requiring oil, I don't use my empire's oil deposits but instead import it from other civs. that's how I conserve my empire's resources and right now i'd say I have absolute control of 98% of the world's resources. the poorest civ in my world as far as economy and resources go is france hahaha. zulu on the other hand has an extra oil deposit and I'm buddy- buddy with their leader so in case japan acts up, and they're annoying me already with their attack on zulu which is my primary oil supplier, I am getting tempted to get into the fray and import oil from zulu to build up a miltary that would whoop up japan really bad lol.
right now, I'm not a fan of trade embargoes and I pretty much have a one-way trade with all the other civs with them buying up my luxury resorces while I don't buy theirs (unless they're strategic resources I need like oil and/or uranium and/or rubber). I make it a point to buy them in a lump sum arrangement. if another civ tries to make a deal with you, try to make a deal with them where they pay you per turn. right now all the other civs pay me per turn either because they buy my luxury resources or they still pay up as a deal to end the war they got into with me lol.
so I guess that's pretty much the most important stuff with civ 4. as for combat arms online, try it. it's an awesome game haha.

oh yeah, I need to add that a democratic form of government is the best form of government in civ 4 because you don't have to pay maintenance costs for your military units and you get more percentage from your banks and cities and citizens. also, with a democracy, if you went to war, you can mobilize your citizens to produce faster. the only problem is that when you go to war for a prolonged period in a democracy, the people start getting war-weary and they rise up and if you can't control the cities with uprisings, your govt will collapse and you won't be able to produce anything. so what I do is before I go to war, I just go to a communist form of govt as a form of declaring martial law and as long as you have at least 8 military units in your big cities and 4 units in your small cities, you can continue to wage war. the only problem is, your empire's income reduces dramatically because you start paying up maintanance costs for all your units.
with me, I've only reverted to communism (martial law) when I went to war with france earlier in the game when they used to be a superpower. pretty much I've always had a democratic form of govt.

mystic,
i also have to say with combat arms is that they come up with a shot called 'nut shot' lol.
you got to try this game. btw, its an online game. but for me, it helps me relax and have fun, especially when I do a nut shot and head shot with my sniper rifle ha ha ha ha... when I start playing the game, I just become a michael myers or jason voorhees. when a player is down, I toggle my machete and then just keep smashing the other player's head lololol. especially if I'm wearing my helmet, mask, goggles, armor and other gear, it just feels awesome  a few months back when friday the 13th was out, they had a custom Jason mask in the inventory which I wanted to get lol. but right now I'm content with my gear haha.
I love playing it in an arctic scenario with at most 5 to 10 players and free-for-all. I have loads of fun hiding, hunting and sniping, gunning down or otherwise killing other players.

**** yeah!!!!!
i just got 500 kills in combat arms woot woot :dance::dance: with about 20 headshots (most of them from sniper rifle), and nut shots here and there :lol::lol:
also, some more interesting tidbits with civ 4:
so as you trade with other civilizations, you will develop an interest in keeping and maintaining that trade, hence the flow of gold to your empire. when the other civs bring money to you per turn, it becomes important that no other empire interrupt that flow unless you're willing to give that money up. so, for example, if zulu is giving gold to me per turn, unless there comes a point in the game I don't need their gold, it's in my economic interest to protect their cities because if one of their cities get invaded or razed, that represents a reduction of their national income and then to compensate for that, they'll be compelled to terminate any trade treaties they have with you.
but if your empire comes to a point where it's very wealthy (in my case my civ has 500,000+ gold), if some civ invades one of zulu's cities, I don't have to directly go to war with them. since you got the money, all you have to do is use your intelligence agency to initiate propaganda in the occupied city until it falls to your hands, after which you can revert the control of the city to the zulu muhahahaha....

another interesting civ 4 tidbit:
although the other nations may already have SDI, you can make their cities become 100% vulnerable to your nuclear strikes by simply razing to the ground their city with the SDI advance. so what I do is I station at least 2 transports full of modern tanks at the coast of these foreign cities where it is close to the city with the SDI satellite in them, with at least 1 support battleship and one nuclear submarine loaded with a tactical nuke. if they misbehave, that will be the first city to be taken out and they become vulnerable to your nuclear strikes 100%
but in order for you to know the cities with the SDI, you got to investigate the cities first and then write them so you remember what city has them so you can station your strike force.

What video games do you play?
Yes.
This goes for me as well, though I don't care for Sports, Real-time Strategy, or Eastern RPGs.
Lately, I've been playing Fallout 3, Deadspace, Batman Arkham Asylum, Star Wars Force Unleashed, and Resident Evil 5.
As for which type of system is my favorite, it depends on the game. RPGs, Turn-based strategy, First Person shooter, I like on the PC. Action Adventure, platformer, on the console.

One of the best games I ever played was a game called Deus Ex which was on the PC and PS2 platform. The game was very early 2000s but to this day it remains one of my top three all time games only trailing Knights of the Old Republic and Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. Deus Ex is a role playing game that is a first person shooter but has one of the most deep and complex thought provoking societal story lines. In fact, the storyline is the greatest part of the game. Many describe the game setting as being in a not too near future in an anti-utopian setting where a virus has plagued mankind and various governmental and secret organizations are vying for control of the world so to speak.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone. The graphics are starting to get very outdated now but they are not bad at all for early 2000s graphics.
I also like the Splinter Cell series.
Let me state that there was a sequel to Deus Ex which was called Deus Ex Invisible War that came out on the PC and XBOX around the mid 2000s. It was a good game in its own right but I would strongly recommend playing the original Deus Ex first because it was a better game and of course makes playing the sequel Deus Ex Invisible war more understandable of what is going on so to speak.

I play Starcraft and other build and fight games as well. Generals zero hour if they make it I have played it at one point or anouther.
Strike tatics are critcal for a quick victory. Use of faints and choke points holding the other player in a static prolonged conflict.Spending rescources to fight in one spot. One thing in all these games is a two stage deployment works against even proplayers as they think that the army they are attacking is my main force. Only to find my smashing thier bases and crushing their citys with anouther army. Some catch on and use more tact refusing to engadge me in the areas of my choice. Then they are ducks to small attacks and my building larger armys.. looking for the best flood zone in a seige one must make a tatical deciding factor. Where does the other player place his troops, where they think I will bring a main force. So I let them think that by attacking one spot constantly. At least until that weak spot is open then comes the flood. I get a foot in the door even the best players find I own the land.

Ultra Sayan....Good points and tips for Civ 4! Thanks! Some of those tips I already employ..but others are new! Unfortunately, some of those tactics don't work well in the higher level games. Frustrating as get out. Still love the game though!
I swear they should simply teach anthropology with this game. Makes more darn sense to me in the rise and fall of empires then some old dusty book! War too...very realistic when it comes to how your society deals with War weariness.
Thanks again for all the great info....I'll put it to good use.
Gonna have to try the sniper game ...sound fun! Favorite part to play in COD! Hehehehe..love to snipe me some bad guys...too much fun!

you're welcome
yeah the game's AI is really amazing in how it mimics real-life situation. to add to what i already mention. with a democracy, in order to maintain civil order in your cities what you only need to have in your cities are courts and police stations, unlike in communism where you have to station troops in your cities to maintain order. in a democracy, your cities are immune to propaganda because your citizens have the power and are better informed.
currently, all my cities are producing wealth but soon i will have to overhaul each of my cities' defenses so that each one of them will be able to rely on their own city's defenses instead of relying on other cities' military units (which was a result of the previous imbalance with the cities' developments and growth) and they can independently defend themselves. this will be my 'city defense reform bill' i present to my imperial congress soon he he
I can do that now since my treasury is solid. i was waiting for my treasury to hit 1000000 gold but i think my empire is pretty stable that i can afford to go for it and also finally set the tax to its lowest rate just enough to barely make an income and just enough to cover my empires operating expenses and adjust it as needed but always at the lowest level, hence making the citizens happy and productive
and i agree with you how this game teaches a lot of history and anthropology, especially if you open up the civilopedia.

Ultra Sayan....Good points and tips for Civ 4! Thanks! Some of those tips I already employ..
also fun is looking at my empire and how it is so rich! lol. in the northern hemisphere of the empire, in the southeast close to the 16th City, you have the uranium mountains which is preserved and conserved as per imperial policy lol.
then in the central region deserts of the mainland, you have the oil fields and the oil fields off-mainland on another continent.
then you have aluminum alley on the continent farther north of the mainland which is a exotic tourist destination. then north of that continent is an island which serves as the imperial capital city haha.
on the mainland, you have the pyramids, the great library, the colossus, etc. lol. and serves as the political, art, technological, commercial, financial, and scientific center of the empire while the northwestern desert islands serve as my defense manufacturing base (right now just producing wealth but goes on to become my primary military manufacturing base in wartime).
and on the western continent you have the entertainment/theater center of the empire with Kyoto City having Shakespeare's theater (kind of like my empire's Broadway/Hollywood).
my empire is a diverse culture being a byproduct of several conquests (french, roman, greek, iroquois, japanese, aztec, english). but the aztec I had no choice but to wipe out at the beginning of the game lol although I've retained the name of their cities just to maintain some history so in essence I've assimilated them into my empire lol.

I get a foot in the door even the best players find I own the land.
yeah these games are amazing. although from what I understand with starcraft, it's basically pure real-time strategy game like command and conquer. I was into command and conquer for quite awhile but when I discovered civilization, I found that command and conquer and these kinds of games are limited in scope. all you have to do is make units, structures, adopt a plan and strategy but no big picture. although they are realy good and used to play them a lot. but I like a game that goes on virtually forever and a lot of things can happen. civ 4 accomplishes this, and its almost a perfect game.

And right now i'm enjoying the weather in Hawai'i.

I've seriously thought of installing a DOS emulator so I can play some of my old Sierra games like Red Baron on my current system.
I'm enjoying the weather of Arizona. Low 90's currently. Hmm....time to break out the sweater.

still waiting for a new civilization game that is real-time. age of empires is quite limited in scope on what you can do.
Age of Empires on the Nintendo DS is one of my favorite DS games.

age of empires wouldve been cooler if its scope is larger. its not like civilization where the game, aside from teaching strategy, also teaches about history, anthropology & governance. in that regard aoe is more like command and conquer. there are many interestingthings w aoe, like the game being done in real time, the graphics, and the nuclear explosion lol. but its still limited on what a player can do in the game unlike in civ 4 where you have a variety of options.

hehe.
on top of the 'city defense reform bill' i'll present to my imperial congress, I'm now also tinkering with the idea of my own empire's version of a healthcare reform bill for Union of Federal Regions (the name of my empire haha).
currently, there are only 1 hospitals for every region throughout the greater UFR. the 'healthcare reform' I'm thinking of would construct hospitals in all of the cities of my empire with the goal of stemming population decreases because healthcare/hospital access would be readily available. the ability of a city to produce more is also based on the number of citizens that city has. I think the most populated city in this world is the zulu capital and at one point it had reached a max population of 32 million, a definite bragging right. my most populous city only is able to reach 29 million at its max and I wanted it to beat zulu.
but if I were to do that, that means I would then have to start paying for maintenance costs for the hospitals that are constructed which means I have to pay more than usual which means I'd have to raise the tax rate... lol.
what to do, what to do... haha

It is build and stradigy. A lot of fun for a few years until I went to console game systems because the PC gaming always has more demands than my system can provide or operation systems upgrades would not support the programs I had already. I got sick of the nightmare and no longer get the PC games.
Xbox 360 is simpler, no problems with CPU speed or not enough memory or wrong video card ect....

hmmm... haven't played any of the Total War games but from the sounds of it, it sounds like they're like command and conquer. but I will check them out.
Its more of a crossbreed with Civilization and Age of Empires. You have your turn based empire building portion of the game, and you also have the real time strategy aspect of it. It's a very neat game, and the two aspects compliment each other nicely.

the most perfect game for me is if they could integrate the best of military strategy games (like Jane's naval fleet, command and conquer), empire-building-games (civilization 3 and civilization 4), life simulator games (the sims), and first-person shooter (call of duty, halo, etc...), space conquest/battle games (star wars fleet), flight simulator (janes fighters anthology). a seamless integration of these games and their best elements would be the best kick-ass game

hmmm... now you got me intrigued with Total War. ill definitely checking that out.
lol yeah the game I'm thinking will be complicated. I was thinking in terms of being able to switch views from first-person view to bird's eye view.
the player will have the ability to become who he/she wants to become, from supermarket clerk to model to soldier to police to pilot to fighter pilot to ruler of a nation. the player will be able to do loads of stuff, with a soldier of course he/she will be able to go to a FPS mode when battling opponents. when the player becomes a ruler they would have many options that you can find in civ 4, plus the ability to initiate exploration of space and then you can have the ability to be a space soldier or an admiral of an entire fleet or pilot a starfighter. lol.
I might as well make this game. I actually already have a working algorithm but it needs to be ironed out in more detail. its something I've done since playing command and conquer and discovered civilization 3 because I found that althoug command & conquer was an amazing game, unlike civ 3, I thought it was limited in scope. so through te years my algorithm just kind of evolved as I discovered more and more amazing games. lol
I'm thinking that this game could go both on CD and online using Combat Arms model which is a free online game only that with special stuff, you can buy it.
janes fighters anthology is awesome. still have that game from the other cpu and the fighter I customized in that game.

Furrys have a place in the grand scheme of gaming, anime, manga, etc.
They're at best a fringe group of all three of those subcultures actually. They tend not to get a lot of repsect from any of those groups. Kind of like how in the world of gaming Mini gamers and LARPers are on the fringe.
And when I say furry, I mean those people that actually THINK they are animals in human bodies....or those annoying poser furries you see at cons with the stupid cat ears and faux foxtails. Dressing up like an animal is ONE thing, beleiveing you are one is right up there with people who believe they are actually vampires (I'm a LARPer, I've met my share of those). Playing an anthropmorphic character and being a furry, not the same thing at all.

Well i consider myself a furry, and this board seems nice, compared to another board i won't mention here. Because on the other board as soon as i posted a wolf pic. the other people started posting pics of a person wearing a afro with the term"pools closed"

I grew up playing Atari 2600 games. I LOVED the cartridge games with no load times. I got ticked off last night because I threw Project Gotham Racing 3 in my Xbox 360 last night, had my force feedback Logitech wheel and pedals set up, and I was going to go RACING! Except for one thing: Xbox Live had determined that there was an update available for this game.
WHAT THE HELL?? I HATE THAT!! I had my racing booties on and everything and what am I doing? Watching a download progress bar? Boogity Boogity let's go racing dammit!! That's the kind of junk which frustrates me to no end.
Then there's the Xbox Live threat: If you do not download this update, you will be signed out of Xbox Live. So what's the first thing you see when you download the update? "Signed out of Xbox Live". I guess you're damned if you do and damned if you don't!
You probably would not believe my gaming setup. I have my living room setup and a game room setup. Both have Dolby Surround systems, both HDTV. The living room setup is a movie screen. Literally. 6 Foot diagonal widescreen picture, rear projection from a ceiling mounted Optoma home theater DLP projector. The game room setup is a cute little Sony Bravia HDTV.
I take my gaming experience seriously. When I'm racing, I set up fans to feel wind in my face. When I'm playing jet ski games, I'll put my feet in a bucket of water. When I'm playing Karaoke Revolution, I'll put on my Elton John shades. In order to beat the game, you have to BE the game.
My favorite games are the oddballs. For example, "Typing of the Dead" (Sega, Dreamcast) which has you typing for your life. Fail this typing lesson, and it's a death sentence.
Games that can make me laugh have me from the word go. Games like Elite Beat Agents on the Nintendo DS that are just so off the wall that you're laughing too hard to play them, those are the kinds of games I enjoy.
One of the latest off the wall games is Plants vs. Zombies (Popcap games, PC) which just totally cracks me up. Gardening to save your brains from being eaten by zombies? Who comes UP with this stuff? Pole vaulting zombies? My stomach hurt from laughing so hard! The Michael Jackson zombie nearly had me calling an ambulance!
Or how about Ready 2 Rumble Round 2 (Dreamcast) which had Hillary Clinton as a boxer taunting "Yer gonna need health care when I'm done with ya!"
I like the off the wall games, racing games and flight combat (Ace Combat series) the most. Games I really don't like so much are the FPS, RTS and Grand Theft Auto type of games. GTA has its funny moments but it's kind of a sick humor I don't care for.

One of my favorite role playing public radio skits is called "Another Flame War On the Internet" and it has probably one of the funniest lines when one of the guys mentions something about furries needing love to. The other guy yells, "Oh my god! I knew it! You're a furry, a dirty, dirty furry!" and then from there it proceeds to degenerate into pointing out the other guy's love of Hentai, also accusations about Nazi's and an explaination of this principle (I can't remember what the name of it is) that basically states the longer a topic goes on a message board it increases the likelihood of somone getting called a Nazi.

I've actually spent more time than I'd care to admit on USENET discussion groups.
I don't think I've ever met a "furry" and it's not like I'm not weird enough. I've been to Star Trek conventions, I have a pretty good collection of Anime (Ranma1/2, Bubblegum Crisis, Trigun, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc.) and I know who CLAMP is and I'm familiar with the works of Hayao Miyazaki.
I prefer subbed over dubbed with very few exceptions (like when REAL talent is brought in by Disney for films like Kiki's Delivery Service) because good acting is good acting in any language, same as bad acting is bad acting.
There's an interview with the director of "Planet of the Apes" on an alternate track of the DVD where the director is asked "Why did you put top actors in costumes when you could make cheap actors look the same?" and the answer was priceless. "I bought acting, not looks." The film won an academy award and is easily one of the most famous films of all time.
This "Furry" phenomenon reminded me of that interview because the director went on to describe something I thought was funny. The makeup was brutal, took HOURS to put on and so come lunch break, no way was anybody getting out of makeup to put on the feed bag. The chimps would sit with the chimps, the orangutans would sit with the orangutans, and the gorillas would sit with the gorillas. People classified themselves, and these were ACTORS. Students of human behavior doing this.
I always considered my tastes weird, I mean seriously, I'm probably the last guy in the USA who has a 3DO still hooked up ready to play but this furry biz is disturbing.

I have the Pitt and Broken Steel but I just started the Pitt recently. It had been so long I wanted to replay the game as a goody two-shoes after being Mr. Evil. Fallout is the only game where I actually had trouble picking the evil options, some of them were sooooo disgusting.
Is Anchorage worth buying? I've heard its pretty short.

COD 4, nightmare campian survival is "be a good shot". Online challenging and one needs experiance for the maps.
COD waw, the campian is fantastic, online is intense with good weapons selections. The zomie levels makes one sweat in higher levels. They added the dogs it became insane for survival. The forth one has a packapunch machine that makes it even futher insanity. Ive survived 27 rounds so far. It seems when ever a good team gets to the higher levels players break...thats when we get flooded.
Left 4 Dead...that was crazy on higher diffculty. Floods of infected smokers, boomers, hunters and the ever crazy moment of the tank coming out of the woodwork. Online finding a good team is a bit more of a challenge. It always seems like some ten year old has to scream orders like he owns the copy rights and starts shooting people when no one listens. OR they argue through out the game or want to play a glitch. Some idiot has to get the witches all fired up and guess who they head for first, ME.
Them players move on fast enough thou so it's a short misery when the encounters happen.
Halo3, wait time for online is amazingly long for a great online game. I rather play the campian than wait 10 minutes for a match. The only good thing was the mic count was very low. I wonder if it was because it was so foul and disgraceful that they could not take the online experiance to the public? They had to have done something to stop the single worst gutter talk in all of gaming.
Halo2, still has cheaters, mods and a lot of laggers. Campian is worth keeping the game.
Nothing says I love you like sticking a demolition charge on the EDF in Red Faction. If distroying everything is ones calling. If one is lucky to get a walker the mayhem is fantastic.

I thought about buying a ps2 and Guitar Hero World Tour. It comes with the game and a wireless guitar for 55 dollars, then 99 for the PS2.
It would be the cheapest way to get into Guitar Hero. Unfortunately, that's about all the PS2 is good for anymore. There aren't any other games worth having.
Maybe I'll wait until Christmas and the price of the Wii will come down some since the PS3 is now just 50 dollars more and the Xbox I believe is now cheaper than Wii.

I know a USB keyboard works on an Xbox360 already because I just used a Logitech keyboard to type in some redeem codes for Rock Band 2 last night.
The reason that Xbox doesn't make a Keyboard and Mouse work on games is because they swore up and down that their console would not be a PC.
The lines between consoles and PC's have become blurrier, with consoles like Wii and the web browser for it (Opera) and the on-line gaming capabilities (which I have but rarely use).
I can't get into using a keyboard for a game controller at all, unless it's a keyboarding game like Sega's "Typing of the Dead" where you have to type for your life. One misspelled word and it's a death sentence.
Since I never got into playing games with a keyboard (I use PC's for business only and never games) I'm not used to gaming on the mouse-keyboard setup and game with console controllers exclusively.

Xbox 2010?
I don't think XBox is going that route. They've been pouring resources into Project Natal, which is an upgrade to the Xbox360 to incorporate face and voice recognition as well as real-time motion capture for controller-free gaming.
I didn't think the Xbox360 was quite that powerful but Microsoft says it is. With Microsoft pouring that kind of loot into an upgrade this late in the Xbox360 life cycle I'd say M$ is sticking with this platform for at least three more years.

Just my opinion, but once you get used to using a keyboard and mouse for FPS games, there's no going back to gamepads.
Not making a keyboard and mouse that's compatible with FPS games on Xbox360 just for the sake of distinguishing their system from PC's is ridiculous. I would really like to play Halo 3 but I'll be damned if I'm going to do it with their crummy gamepad.
Sooner or later they'll release Halo 3 for the PC. I'll just have to wait.

I never even got used to using a mouse for a computer. All of my PC's are equipped with trackballs. I always have to pick up a mouse and put it back on the mouse pad. Very annoying so I try to avoid them whenever possible.

The game is optimized for the gamepad and would probably suffer badly were any other control scheme implemented. It's not like anybody plays an Xbox360 sitting at a desk anyway.
Sooner or later they'll release Halo 3 for the PC. I'll just have to wait.
I'd think with the number of FPS games on the PC platform that Halo would just be another one in the crowd, hardly worth noticing. Not that I'm much of an FPS gamer, I get more into the racing and puzzle games myself.

If anything the game stations both playstation3 and xbox360 have risen to new more challenging graphics and game play is faster than ever. Demands faster cpu speeds to keep up are well thought out in thse game concoles. The XBOX360 was a meeting of both campian game play and online challenges a little over the playstation 3 which is extremely high end for game play and online but the 360 does it way better. The playstation3 online was a secondiary thought to the machines capabilitys for graphics which are second to none. However BOTH XBOX360 and the playstation3 needed to put better CD readers in the machines. They are not well made and often are the first thing to go in the game systems. If they do future improvements to the machines it should be in that area first.
the wii system is great but injurys have been a problem in extended use...not to mention broken controlers and items around the house as they sometimes get thrown in the game play.
Game companys are not suffering if they have a popular product and can sell a million copys in a few hours. Halo2 and then Halo3 then it was Call of duty world at war,Gears of War 2 ect. The disk is the key that makes a game system work.
Wars rage as to what is the better system....the way I see it is if you like playstation3 it's a great choice..if your a Xbox360 fan it is a great choice...the wii is on it's own.

I swear I must have some kind of reading issue because EVERY time I see Blackcatrun's name I read Blackcaturn ......it's creepy.
Lol.
It's very old superstition.
In the early years before lights the laterns used to pick up just a cat eyes in the night a black cat was only seen as a pair of eyes in the dark even when close. This was the rise of the black cat crossing ones path being bad luck. It was because a pair of glowing eyes floating around scared the load out before they hit the outhouse mostly. So it was witches who used black cats to spy on the village with blackcats...because it was so darned frightening.
When the superstition hit main stream chamber pots made a jump in sales.

For those wondering what the zombie level is on the Call of Duty World at War.
This is the last map pack zombie level trailer put out to show the game play Der Riese. A first person shooter muti-level survival mayhem.
Warning good music too.

I'd think with the number of FPS games on the PC platform that Halo would just be another one in the crowd, hardly worth noticing. Not that I'm much of an FPS gamer, I get more into the racing and puzzle games myself.
If you could use a gamepad and I used a mouse and keyboard, I guarentee I would beat you every time. Halo 1 was played with a gamepad on the original Xbox. the PC port implemented a mouse/keyboard control scheme, and it worked incredibly well.
If Microsoft brought Halo 3 to the PC tomorrow, it would not be just another face in the crowd. Just as Halo 1 was not just another face in the crowd.

The control with a mouse and a keyboard just feels incredibly WRONG. With a gamepad, there's a TRIGGER. It feels like pulling the trigger on a gun. There's more gaming satisfaction when the controller feels like what is happening on the screen. Clickety-click bang-bang doesn't give me that feel. Squeezing the trigger on a gamepad does, though.
I'm a controller freak. If I'm playing a driving game, I've got a force feedback wheel in my hands. If I'm playing Guitar Hero, I'm holding a guitar. If I'm playing House of the Dead, I've got a gun controller in my mitts. Fishing games use a fishing reel.
I've got the Hori Flightstick for Ace Combat 5. I've got a trackball set up to play Centipede. I want my games to be as real as can be and that doesn't happen with a mouse and a keyboard.
It may be faster (doubtful) and more accurate (really doubtful compared to what a lightgun can do) but if it doesn't feel like the right kind of control it's not going to feel like gaming to me.

There are so many jillions of FPS shooters on the PC that the market is completely flooded with them. There's no money in releasing another FPS game in the PC market these days.

They should change the Xbox's name to the FPS 360. Three out of every four games is a shooter, and only like five of them in the last three years have been any good.

It's a Western machine and most Western games focus on violence. That's why the Japanese systems tend to have much better variety.

What's much more satisfying is being able snipe someone halfway across a map with no scope. I can have that kind of accuracy with a mouse. Good luck doing that with a gamepad.
I remember back when I first got Metroid Prime. I'm playing it for the first time and thinking "what the hell is with the aiming??". They made it possible for the player to lock on to a target. And you don't even need to aim at the target to lock on to it. They had to do that because using a gamepad sucks.
Halo 3 uses a similiar auto aim feature because using a gamepad is rather difficult compared to using a mouse to aim. You don't get goofy help like this in the PC version of Halo. You have to actually aim.

Currently own a PC obviously, a 360, and a PS2. I haven't used the PS2 for months and the only games I play on the PC are older ones like Baldurs Gate though its been a while since that.
I use my 360 a lot though. I've put over 200 hrs into Oblivion and I've also probably put over 100 hrs into Mass Effect, Fallout 3, and the current Madden. I bought Dead Space on sale last week but haven't tried it out yet.

I supposse so. A controler is just like any other input tool. Halo then 2,3 are great games.Campians are marvals of enineering and the AI is fantastic. Online, cheaters, hackers, mods ruined the game experiance. Not to mention the smack talk got so foul it could gross out the devil. I unplugged the mic just because it was so gross.
Autolock is not easly done as discribed in modern FPS concole games staying locked when the target is firing back is all the player. Plus the players can turn off autolock. Being fluid in motion is a key aspect of playing any game, staying on target and not being hit use of cover ect... Call of Duty is a prime example of the autolock being subtale not over whelming, one has to be on the unit to autolock, raising the sight picture disables the autolock.
I like the hardcore game play in the COD games best. It's brutal combat for the quick or dead. Smack talk is not over used because the chances of being king are slim to none for legit players. Even the best of us can become a kicked dog in any given map.
Theres an old game I like called Red Faction. Wicked brutal but fun PC game.
However as always updates went by it's old programming. The newer games are more than my computer will handle even with all the memory and high CPU speeds.
I dont worry about that when I have a concole anymore.

There's no realism to pointing and clicking on an enemy. A mouse is a horrible controller even for computing. A mouse means that you are stuck in front of a desk and what kind of ridiculous gaming experience is that when there's a desk in front of you?
When I get down and game, I don't sit at any namby-pamby desk with tinny little computer speakers and a dinky little computer screen. HELL NO! I fire up the Surround Sound, hit the projector on a 72" movie screen and I get INTO the game.
A PC is not serious gaming. A PC is a general computing device that is sometimes used for games but it is not OPTIMIZED for the task at hand. These poor PC game developers have a tough row to hoe because there are THOUSANDS of computer configurations out there which makes it impossible to get maximum game performance for everybody right out of the box.
Consoles are dedicated game machines. That's what they do, that's ALL they do and the software works out of the box. There's no "Testing your sound card" or "Testing your video card". If it says "Playstation 2" then it will by gum work on any PS2 on the planet.
I got out of PC gaming back in the MS-Dos days when every game had to have a special "Boot Disk" to even run right. I was disgusted at buying a game and then spending HOURS of my scarce play time configuring the software. That's not what I call fun.

On arrival though you find the ship has been taken over by some sort of demonic looking alien things.

TY,because one message board i won't mention here. When i mentioned opening a shop, they insulted me,and said i only level up and stuff like that, which is untrue, because IMHO SL is too open ended to be a game,i feel it's more like a 3D version of the internet, like Landmarks in place of url requests, failed teleports in place of 408 errors and unable to find a region in place of 404 errors.

I actually prefer a mouse BECAUSE I require fast and accurate movements. Gamepads simply don't provide what I need.
I can't stand the slow pitiful movements in Halo 3 when I try to spin around. My friend has this game and he just goes ga ga over it. I can't stand to play it because of the gamepad. In Halo 1 on my PC I can spin around, look behind me and spin back around without losing a step.

The best games for me are the twisted and demented ones that take NOTHING seriously.
For example, "Rayman Raving Rabbids", I thought I was going to pass out laughing at swinging the cow. MOOOOoooooOOOOOO!! Those guys were nuts who came up with that!
Then there was "Conker's Bad Fur Day" with one of the bosses being "The Great and Mighty Poo", an opera singing steaming pile to be defeated with toilet paper. Seriously, very demented and imaginative.
Probably the granddaddy of all demented games would be the platformer "Earthworm Jim", an earthworm in a powersuit defeating a boss named Queen Slug-for-a-butt.
Fighters haven't escaped dementia either, with titles like the venerable Mortal Kombat "TOASTY!" and other honorable mentions like Ready 2 Rumble, Celebrity Deathmatch and Smash Brothers.
If Fighters, Party Games and Platformers haven't escaped dementia, then surely racers are always serious, right? About as wrong as Mario Kart and the various clones with Crash Bandicoot (demented anywhere he goes) and even non-videogame characters getting into crazy race action. I've got "Looney Tunes Space Race" (Sega Dreamcast), "Disney Magical Racing Tour" (Dreamcast) and "Nascar Rumble" (PSX).
I don't think ANY genre has gone unscathed. FPS fans may think their genre is serious, but I'd refer such serious fans to "Duke Nukem 3D" with the tagline "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum and I'm all outta bubblegum."
Not even Chess has gone without its cutup, with "Battle Chess" and hilarious animations turning checkmate into check mania.
From Atari to Williams, in the Arcades, at home and online, video games have been cutting up and making fun of themselves since Ms. Pacman rolled on the scene, and they're still at it today.
These are the games I like the most. Gaming should never take itself too seriously.

With the recent price drop finally picked up an XBOX 360. I'm into most game genre's to an extent, but enjoy the RPGs more than anything.
Either way slowly picking up a back log of good games I've miss since being exclusive to the Wii, if anyone uses Live or plays online games PM I will add you. (Well in a few days I will when my wireless adaptor arrives).
Currently have Madden '10 and Sacred 2. Will be picking up with Bioshock/Oblivion pack and Fallout 3 shortly. And for FPS going to download Battlefield 1943.
As for the topic, I play mainly RPGs with action and sports games scattered in for fun. Normally have one FPS that I keep on hand incase the urge to play comes, but haven't really got into any online shooters since Socom 2.

it is
Need for speed MOST WANTED
---you are a street racer and you get cheated out of a great car in the beginning of the game and you have to buy a cheap car and build it up and get better and better cars untill you are in an awesome car, you have to race all the other outlaw street racers if you beat them you might be able to get thier pink slip and take thier car way for yourself and the cops are trying to attack and stop you and arrest you.
that game is a blast from start to finish and the graphics and story are darn good.
if you play too long you will have the urge to drive people off the real highway expecially cops but if you exhibit your self control you will refrain...most of the time.

Oh I agree, the PS2 was torn to pieces, I played a few games online when I had it (other than FFXI) and most were so hacked or players glitching, it killed everything fun about the game. But that hasn't chanced really. Look at any leaderboard on just about any game that has one, whoever is leading is likely hacking. Normally to the point of being obvious.
e.g. Sacred 2 has leaderboards, best kill to death ratio, leader of the entire world? 0 kills 0 deaths. Or they will do it and have "1337." Just ruins the fun for everyone.
As for a kids online, I just enjoy toying with them and seeing how angry they can get. Although I'm only 25, so I'm still a little bit of a talker myself. :shhh:
All the online games I get into, you can normally find a group of older or at least mature players. Then when someone like the young swearing kid comes in the room, he basically gets mocked until he leaves, and we all laugh. Good times.

Another good option, the Battlefield series has "squads." If the game is 12 vs 12 players, you can only talk to team mates in your squad, normally 3 squads of 4 people although it appears the XBLA game Battlefield 1943 allows more than 4 people as well as not being in a squad all together.
But this allows you to set up basically a radio channel with anyone, you can add or remove people from it, so you can work together with a smaller group of players. Friend of mine and I play this every now and then, we just set up the two of us in a squad and leave it at that. So we can talk freely without anyone else hearing as well as no one else talking over us.
The XBL party system would let you do this in pretty much any game, can even voice chat with friends who aren't even playing the same game. I don't have a PS3 so I'm not sure how their service works.

One of my hopes for Seganet (dead now) and Xbox LIVE was that hackers would be found out and shown the door. I've tried online gaming since Xband came out on the SNES and I've never been anything but disappointed in some way or other.
Either you wait forever to get matched up with other players or the players are hackers or even worse don't know how to play the game. It's a hideous, frustrating experience and I know why it takes forever to find other players... it's because gamers like me are turned off and don't bother.
because
e.g. Sacred 2 has leaderboards, best kill to death ratio, leader of the entire world? 0 kills 0 deaths. Or they will do it and have "1337." Just ruins the fun for everyone.
That's just bad moderating and no oversight when such obvious cheaters rule the game, and that's a turnoff. It's the death of online gaming because the three quickest ways I know to tick somebody off are to lie, cheat or steal.
Good times.
Usually, I'd leave first. I like to think I have a thick skin, served 8 years in the U.S. Navy, sailed on 5 of the 7 seas, thrown grenades and fired missiles and still, I consider myself a gentleman. I will not hang around with barbarians. A man is known by the company he keeps, and no company is better than bad company.

On a side note, the SNES had online? I consider myself a fairly informed 'gamer,' read up on the most news articles, even belong to a gaming forum, never knew that. I can only imagine the service must have been terrible. 56k online was bad enough, I don't even want to imagine getting in Mode 7 graphic battles.

The problem with the old style PS2 is no network capability without the network adapter and finding one since they've been discontinued for two years is no easy task.
I think I actually still have my network adapter and I have no interest in using it. If anyone might want it, maybe we can work out a trade (maybe a used game or something).

So true Gene.
I myself use the Xbox live service so I can play with a few friends and my nephews.
I've been around my nephews when they have played games with younger kids. I wouldn't be able to tolerate that.
I've never gone into a "public" game. I just use the service, like I said, to play with friends and family. I have no desire to really be around the immature and barbaric.

Xband was a modem adapter which goes into the SNES cartridge slot and the game plugs into the top while the phone jack is on the side. It works for playing import Super Famicom games as well.
It didn't last long, like most high-priced peripherals it didn't sell and the curse of online gaming is if you don't have gamers then you don't have gaming.
Seganet suffered the same fate. Most console gamers simply will not pay extra to go online. The ones who do have the cash to blow don't have the time to be online very much because they're working for a living.
I could play Rock Band 2 on Xbox Live in a minute flat but consider what that toy costs.
The 25MBps internet connection is $40 per month, the game cost $140 and the Xbox 360 is a $300 machine and that's not even counting the TV or internet or sound system... it's safe to say that it costs a kilobuck to game online.
Now, what kind of people have that kind of money? Me, of course but for the most part it's a bunch of kids spending their parents money. You can't make much of a market out of trust fund babies so online gaming has a dual liquidity problem. Not enough gamers and not enough cash.
The whole idea of everybody in the world being online ended badly with the dot.bomb crash. Online gaming is a crash too. It costs too much so it attracts spoiled trust fund kids

Hmm online gaming may slow, but I don't see it crashing. Honestly I hear a lot of people moving towards a online only service. I think we will likely see physical media (ie game discs and video game stores) crash before online gaming. If you ask me things will be moving towards Direct Download. Browser games right from your console, plug in your credit card numbers and it downloads right to your harddrive.
Likely not happening tomorrow, but I think that's more of a reality then online gaming crashing. Regardless how many people cheat, how many people are annoying and how costly it gets, I think there is enough of a following that dispite all that online gaming will always be around.
As for the kilobuck, sure it costs a lot to play online. Using the XBOX, the system is at least $300, but that's something children get for christmas or birthdays, one time purchase and at this point more than enough people have one. XBOX Live is $50 a year, not exactly breaking the bank, but annoying. Most households already have internet, although that is about $50 a month. The games are the only cost most kids deal with, and those are normally gifted as well but $60 for a normal title new, then Rock Band has the instruments to pick up. It's expensive, but I don't know about unreachable. Esspecially cause it's something that at this point you would have been purchasing over the last 4-5 years if you were interested in online gaming.

Here is my pet peeve about playing online with X-Box live.
-Cheaters, people who purposely manipulate the game so they can win or just be a jerk.
-Whiners and complainers
-Poor sports
-People who are terrible at games
I've come across so many people who suck at Call of Duty 4 and World at War that they bring down my leaderboard stats. I like to play team based games ie "Search and Destroy," and "Team Deathmatch." I'll be on a team that not only do they not use common sense in these games, but couldn't hit the rear end of a bull with a mop. I honestly wish I could get my win/lose ratio up but can't unless I'm on a decent team.

The hard drive is pretty much useless and the PS2 is so hacked that it's nearly as bad as the PC with cheaters online.
Online gaming isn't worth playing because of all the hackers and cheaters, and even if the game is on the level there's still going to be some foul-mouthed punk kid acting like he just learned his first cussword today. I have every capability of gaming online but I don't do it because every time I try I run into jackasses.
There's plenty of online PC games that are great and they are worth playing. I know there are some cheaters, but that's the nature of the beast. I can put up with a cheater or two.

The great videogame crash of 1983 happened because Atari lost two major lawsuits, one against Colecovision making their VCS adapter and another one against Activision making unlicensed games for the Atari VCS (aka Atari 2600)
The fallout of that meant any kid in a garage hacking away could release a game with zero quality control, no debugging, and no accountability of any kind. Disgusted consumers fled the market in droves as crapware flooded the market.
That's when Nintendo saved the gaming world with a copyrighted boot code and to get it on a game, publishers needed the "Nintendo Seal of Quality" which restored confidence and flushed the crapware into the sewers of digital Purgatory.
Today, licenses mean something, they mean quality control and that's something I expect from a game. PC games have no quality control so there's no telling if they're crapware or not.

Closer to a fin. It's $49.99 per year payable in advance for XBL Gold, and XBL Silver is free but that's just Mama Microsoft keeping the lines open so the 'box can phone home.
Annoying as all heck really, because half the time I put in a game that I haven't played in a while the screen throws up "An update has beenmade available. Download it now or face the wrath of Bill Gates?"
They call these patches "updates" which is really just a euphemism for "we screwed up and sent out this software half-baked, our bad."

Consoles are supposed to be perfect and never release software on the public in beta form. That's okay on PC's where users are accustomed to subrate untested crapware that glitches and crashes but console gamers are used to being treated better than that.

True, and Nintendo sued the pants off of Tengen for it because to fool the NES into running they had copied the 10NES boot rom in violation of copyright laws. That's why later games required a 'boot rom' from a licensed cartridge.
Most reputable dealers wouldn't be caught dead selling grey market junk like that. Not if they want to keep getting software releases on the street dates.

I broke down and bought a used ps2 this past weekend.
But my opinion hasn't changed. Gamepads and FPS games don't mix.
I'm just the opposite, I hate trying to play FPS with a keyboard. On the few FPS games that I've tried to play on the PC I've ended up getting a gamepad for it. In some cases the game pad can't be programmed to do all the commands so I end up having to do a combo of game pad and mouse. For instance on one of the Jedi Knight games I balanced the gamepad on a leg while using my left hand on it to move, change weapons, and change force powers while I used my right on the mouse and its buttons to fire and attack. It worked reasonably well but ever since I've gone console only FPS.

As for updates, I don't see your beef. Games are created and play tested, but unfortunately there is a larger population of people willing to devote hours into figuring out ways to screw the system, therefor patches and updates are used to cover these gaps that were miss by normal beta testing. Also, Updates are not always for patching or fixing games, tons of games use updates to add new features. Take updated rosters for sports games, festivals or holiday events in MMO's. These can completely change and improve the game you are playing, and I see no reason to condemn them.

Just because PC games aren't licensed doesn't mean they are all junk. Read some reviews and you'll find plenty of quality PC titles. Of course if you go to the store and pick one at random, most likely junk.
Well, that's sort of the point. It's not worth going through the coal to find the diamond. What caused the video game crash of 1983 wasn't a lack of quality, it was a lack of consumer confidence.
When there's more junk out there than quality then consumer confidence suffers as a result of it.
As for updates, I don't see your beef. Games are created and play tested, but unfortunately there is a larger population of people willing to devote hours into figuring out ways to screw the system, therefor patches and updates are used to cover these gaps that were miss by normal beta testing. These can completely change and improve the game you are playing, and I see no reason to condemn them.
Here's the reason for condemning...
If it's not ready for public consumption, and I mean PERFECT, then it should not be released. The one thing a video game company has from game to game is the name brand. When I see a good name brand, like Capcom, Sega, Namco, EA, Midway, Nintendo and Konami, I know it's GOOD STUFF because they don't slap their name on junk. They've got a reputation built up and they're not going to blow that on losing consumer confidence.
When I see updates, the first thing that pops into my head is "WHY DID THESE IDIOTS LET THIS PIECE OF JUNK ROLL OUT THE DOOR BEFORE IT WAS READY FOR THE STREET?"
I lose confidence in a publisher still putting the finishing touches on after the sale. I think most consumers would. When consumers make a no confidence vote, that means no sale. That's exactly what caused the video game crash of 1983 and it's why publishers have to be extremely careful that they don't flood the market with crapware and destroy consumer confidence.
Otherwise they wind up like Acclaim (ACK! It's LAME!) software with a reputation in the toilet for releasing bad softs and consumers steer clear. Which is exactly what I do for PC gaming software. I'm not going to waste a whole bunch of time reading reviews because if a PC game is decent, it's going to wind up ported to a console ANYWAY.
Just going through my video game collection, I can find PC ports of Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Unreal Tournament and Wolfenstein.
The one thing I don't get is with all these twitch shooters, why can't the PC do fighters? I keep hearing how great the mouse and keyboard is for speed and accuracy but there are no fighters on the PC.
I personally think that Virtual ON is the best fighting game ever devised by man and you will never see a general purpose computer pull it off as a game. Nor will you see Street Fighter IV, Soul Blade, King of Fighters, or any other fast-moving chain-combo fighting game on the PC because the machine can't handle it.
I think it's hilarious that PC gamers look at stuff like Quake and think that's a fast-moving game. Naaah. It's slow as snails compared to something like Tekken or Powerstone. If there's more than ten milliseconds between life and death, that's a slow game.
The PC is a slow gaming machine for casual gamers. That's not me. I'm the guy with the arcade stick and the racing wheel serious about gaming and I don't do my spreadsheets and gaming on the same machine. My game machine is a game machine. That's what it does. That's ALL it does. PC's need not apply.

Amen! Virtually all of the fighters on the PC are ports from console releases. Every once in a while Capcom is generous enough to toss a port to the PC crowd. Street Fighter IV is on the PC and it runs surprisingly well on my own rig.
You tend to get more beat-em-ups/brawlers on the PC than you do actual fighting games. I don't understanding the reasoning behind this.

You tend to get more beat-em-ups/brawlers on the PC than you do actual fighting games. I don't understanding the reasoning behind this.
The genres that don't seem to work on PC are the fighters, racers, rhythm/dance and such as require precise timing.
I love expert timing games. I just got the 3-cymbal set for my Rock Band 2 drum kit and rhythm is perfect. I don't use the stock drum sticks, I have a nice set of Vic Firth sticks for my Yamaha drums that I use for the game. The stock sticks just don't balance right for me.
The PC works for games that don't really require timing, like FPS and flight sims and such, but in things like Platformers, Fighters, and Racers, the PC is a lost cause.
Could you imagine playing a game like Klonoa on the PC? There's no way in heck you'd make those timed jumps. It's hard enough when the hardware is perfectly optimized, and impossible when some variables like CPU speed and plug-and-play hardware drivers are added.
The PC lends itself well to games with forgivable timing. FPS, Puzzle games, Trivia, Flight sims, things where milliseconds don't make a difference but when precision and timing is crucial, you need a console and the reason why is simple: NO VARIABLES.
This PC is bizarre, the one I'm typing on. Twin screens, Microsoft Explorer trackball, Wacom Graphire art pad, 200 watt per channel Dolby Surround and twin DVD drives. And this is my junk 'puter. You can't program for something like that because no two computers are alike. The timing will never be the same, not even on the same machine from bootup to bootup so games which require precise expert timing will never make it on a PC.
Consoles do not have that limitation. Every developer for console games knows the specs.
XBox360:
PowerPC triple core CPU running at 3.2 Ghz.
512 MB RAM
Custom ATI Graphics Processor
500 Million Polygons per second
1080p Hi-Def capable
Every Xbox360 on the planet hits these specs. Developers know EXACTLY what they're dealing with, and can optimize their software to match the machine. Not so with PC developers, heck, they're still trying to make software compatible with Windows '98 from a DECADE ago.
Too many variables make for a bad gaming platform. The PC has far too many variables.

Oh don't get me wrong, I only use PC's for MMORPGs, I wouldn't really touch it for much else. Basically because it's way to expensive to keep on top of it for the new games.
On the point of the video game crash of '83, in 1983 people couldn't readily access video game reviews with a few keystrokes of their PC. Let's face it even brands you labeled as good companies have made poor games. Midway esspecially. I think Gaunlet alone proves that. But in today's gaming world, between movie title games and just flat out junk (ie Vet Doctor on the DS), the video game industry right now has a very low percentage of quality games compared to the whole.
I don't know what the ratio was in 1983, but today I'd argue maybe 5% of games released are any good. And that's everything, everyone has their favorites and non-favorites. So if you don't like RPGs and FPS, then that % drops even more. The difference is now with proper marketing and online reviews, the industry can hold more crap.
I can understand your point on Updating, but I supose we have different tolerance levels, I can understand a game not being perfect. Humans make games, and by in large I'd say we aren't perfect. I appreciate that fact they care enough to spend their own money to fix the game, without charging me more.

It's an exellent point gdoane made and one experianced more times by many PC users/players.
I know one kid who spent 3000 dollers on a gamer computer...and still had to change video cards to play certian games. Funny no one laughed at this expending of funds tobe the king of the game..
The PC cant be beat for RPG/empire worlds..but gamers know the conole is the master of the FPS and race and street fighter type games.
Reviews are watched but not really payed as much heed as one might think.
Rentals are big bucks for new platform game systems...word of mouth at schools and between gamers of all ages can make or break a game in a minute better than any review ever written. Many games just didnt get the play time because the junk was killing the market.
Sony play stations I think made the console gaming into an empire and streamlined the game programmers abilitys by taking out the compatible problem. A ton of games for the system was pure cheap junk.
Anyone seen the bin full of EA Maddens and certian other games that sold tons but sucked? They died because they are junk. THAT taught the game companys a few serouse expencive lessons. They 3D worlds became more prized and some really good game systems built that had some fantastic games out. Sega being one of lessers in the crowd with a really sweet machines.Tough reliable and games that are very rare for any bugs but they fell short.
Some of the games made for the system had improved AI and story lines became a must. Resident Evil is one such event game that took a story with a plot puzzles and dangers worrys and that age old whats in this room questions. That one had to get the next game to get the answers to the first or continued the storyline.
As people learned to race fight and shoot the game systems improved, load times seamless play, fantastic AI, split second reaction times complicated enviroments needed machines with alot of internal power.
Which is why when the Xbox was unvieled it sold like fire in a grease factory. PS2 came out and went into a hall of gamer fame over night. Both systems had bombs for games some went unnoticed like odd worlds Abes Oddessy. AS people went online to compete race games fight and FPS and improved machines made any bugs glare like a neon sign...addons to games like new cars/weapons/armor/ect... make the value of the games rise in replay.

I like RPG's, turned based strategy, puzzle games, etc.... all of which work JUST fine on a PC. Hence why I game on both PC and console. I'm a snob about the content quality of a game, not the machine it runs on. Unlike some people I won't buy crap just to say I have it.

I can agree that the game markets of today are flooded with junk, I don't think it's nearly as bad as the Atari days, but it's true.
I do take issue with the 'bid of madden' games, sports titles find their way to the bids quickly because new titles are out with updated rosters and online features (EA turns off the online servers on their games once the new one is released). So a dated sports game is normally dirt cheap because people want the new ones.
Reviews should be taken more seriously, some are bad, but the key is to find ones you can trust. There are tons of websites and forums for games, and I understand that not everyone has the time or the energy to search hard for this information, but it is there. I have found a nice forum I use for all my game news and chat, this way I can talk with peolpe who have already played the game or know more about it, people I share interests with. Unfortunately this is what it's come too, I don't want to make the case it's a perfect situation, but it's better than the days of the Atari.
So even though crappy games exist, and will continue to be made as they cost so little and someone will accidently buy it, I don't think this will be the end of the video game era like the Atari dang near was.
Side note, RPG's are fine for the PC or console, but FPS are a highly debated topic. You say consoles are the master for FPS, I know people who will never go back from keyboard and mouse for FPS. The mouse tends to be much more accurate, although I prefer them on a console.
angelicmadrigal; Turn based is the best IMO, nice to see others agree. Anymore the ATB (Active Time Battle) system is becoming the way they are made.

I take exception to that. I play a lot of shooters. CoD4, 5, Section 8, etc... and there has only been one game that has come out console only that i've been envious of... Killzone 2 on PS3 for example.
I can't talk about nintendo beating the mario name to death or Sega animating the old and dead sonic the hedgehog for one last walker-assisted run for a bunch of shiny circles.
As far as quality goes, ...uhm, whatever? Development is a harsh mistress. Most of these companies have investors that are concerned with RoI rather than quality. In the PC market, we're seeing a slight up-turn in indie developers like Hi-Rez Studios and Global Agenda (www.globalagendagame.com). Games across the board have patches and updates, and whatever. I don't care if it's console or otherwise. They all have fixes that need to be done.
Regarding speed... LOL. I don't like flame wars where it's console vs PC, but i'm always more than happy to point out the soft target lock that you guys get on console for shooters. Man if I had a soft target lock, i'd be a 50:1 kill/death player also.

Well times changed for sure. So did the profit margins..Halo2 sold a milion copys in less than 24 hours. That never happened before.
Game makers took notice enough to take more time releasing games. Making the game bug free as possible. EA has always been a "snooker player" for sports games. not many are buying them for that shut off of the online.
Best scource of information is a second hand game store. Theres national chains that in my opinion are crap they sell broken machines and nonworking Game CDs. Small privet owned new and used game stores are the best for good quality and for very good info.
WE have one up here run by good people and they know what I play for games.
They also wont stock junk..if it doesnt sell they loose money. They will get a game if requested but wont sell it new or used otherwise.

Well, there are different kinds of shooters. You're calling FPS games "shooters" and that's not what I think of when I think of a shooter. I think of games like Defender, Galaga, Xevious, Zaxxon, Gradius, Tempest, and R-Type, the twitch shooters where the player is never more than two seconds away from certain death.
When I'm playing a shooter like that, and doing really well, I hit a trance-like state where I'm acting on instinct with no real plan beyond kill everything and don't die. It's actually very relaxing even though it seems very violent.
I can't talk about nintendo beating the mario name to death or Sega animating the old and dead sonic the hedgehog for one last walker-assisted run for a bunch of shiny circles.
I can, and I can even name the creators of those titles off of the top of my head. Yuji Naka was the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog and Shigeru Miyamoto was the creator of Mario.
Few games stand the test of time. How many video games can you name that are 15 years old and still selling? Or even TWO years old and still selling? You'll never know how great a game is until it's been around for years and the praises are still being sung.
As far as quality goes, ...uhm, whatever? Development is a harsh mistress. Most of these companies have investors that are concerned with RoI rather than quality.
The video game biz is a venture capital model, and the thing about investors is that they don't like losing money so they want a sure bet. That's why when you see sequels like Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty 5 that they didn't go make an original game and it's why we have sequels out the wazoo.
In the PC market, we're seeing a slight up-turn in indie developers like Hi-Rez Studios and Global Agenda (www.globalagendagame.com (http://www.globalagendagame.com/)). Games across the board have patches and updates, and whatever. I don't care if it's console or otherwise. They all have fixes that need to be done.
As an avowed hard-core conservative, I believe in NO SAFETY NETS. People are more careful when they have no safety nets and have a possibility of failing.
That's why the availability of abortions and birth control have resulted in more unwed pregnancy than ever before when exactly the opposite would be the logical outcome. People who have an "out" will not be as careful as they should be and that's why safety nets are more evil than good.
The ability to patch software after release has made for some very sloppy software. Console software was a lot better before it could be patched. Now it's getting nearly as haphazardly slipshod as the shovelware on PC's.
Regarding speed... LOL. I don't like flame wars where it's console vs PC, but i'm always more than happy to point out the soft target lock that you guys get on console for shooters. Man if I had a soft target lock, i'd be a 50:1 kill/death player also.
That's not the kind of speed I'm talking about. When a console plays a game, that's what it's doing. That's ALL it's doing. That's the one and only job it has, it doesn't do anything else, and it can time everything PERFECTLY. PC's really can't. That's why you'll never see a game that requires real timing (platformers, dance/rhythm, racers, etc.) do well on PC because PC's are general purpose machines with general timing.
PC's can't even keep time better than a dimestore wristwatch. My crummy Timex is accurate within a second per month. I've never seen a PC good for a second per day.

The people i dislike most in online games are Brazillians,of course i don't mean all of them, but a few years ago i caught one ripping textures off a car in a online game part by part and putting them back together and quickly reported the person to the Lindens.
And scripted translators in the online game are bad, because one time i used one around a nice Spanish person and the person told me to turn off the translator.
They don't speak Spanish in Brazil, the language is Portuguese. A translator wouldn't work very well unless it translated to Portuguese and even then, a translator wouldn't work very well. English is a Germanic language, and the structure is somewhat reversed to the Romantic (Latin-based) languages. For example, we'd say "A White Dove" while they'd say "Una Paloma Blanca" or A Dove White. The object of the description precedes the description because the noun has more importance than the adjective.
It's not just a matter of translating words, because the entire structuring of the sentence is different between the Germanic languages, the Romantic languages and the Asian languages.
Take for example the meaning of "is". In English, it's a funny Bill Clinton joke. In Spanish, there actually are two versions of "is". The verb "Ser" is a permanent state, like being a boy or being a girl, and it means "To Be" permanently. The verb "Estar" means the same thing, but in a temporary state, like being at the store, or being tired, the kind of "is" that changes.
It's confusing to an English speaker. Computers don't have the non-linear thinking ability to understand a different set of rules that the human brain enjoys and computer translators will never be any good without comprehension and intelligence. You'll see true artificial intelligence before you ever see a decent computer language translator.

I put 94 hours into it on the first two trips and I could easily equal that this time since I'm trying to do all the expansion stuff plus all the stuff I didn't get to do the first two times. This game is massive and you really can put that much time into it. The thing that people who don't play video games can't seem to understand is the entertainment value that justifies the price of the game.
Sure, you can pay upwards of $60 for a game but if you get 100 hours of entertainment out of it, that's only 60 cents an hour!
Buy a Movie DVD or Blu-Ray for $15 and get two hours of entertainment out of it and what are you paying? That disc is costing over $7 per hour ain't it? So it costs over ten times the money per hour of entertainment.
A smart gamer can game cheaper than cheap, and no, I'm not talking about pirating games. You can pick up a used SNES or Genesis deck for under $20 and used games for under $5 apiece all day long. It's entirely possible to game for less than what cable TV costs hour for hour.
The people who look at video games as an expensive hobby are just looking at price tags and not considering how much entertainment there is in that package. It's the old penny-arcade mentality of thinking you're just buying a credit to hit the start button and that's not the way gaming is today.

Well, that's sort of the point. It's not worth going through the coal to find the diamond. What caused the video game crash of 1983 wasn't a lack of quality, it was a lack of consumer confidence.
When there's more junk out there than quality then consumer confidence suffers as a result of it.
I was with Astrocade, "The Bally Professional Arcade" at the time of the big dive, that actually began in 1982. We were the first to declare bankruptcy. :boohoo:
The primary reason for the crash was the huge number of titles that flooded on the market making it very confusing for people to choose the best titles.
When we began, ourt console cost $250 and we had a very limited number of titles. People would purchase an amount equal to the cost of the console in game cartridges.
It was easy to choose the best games because there were so few choices.
That all changed almost overnight. One week a parent had 4 consoles and a handful of cartridges from which to choose and the next week there were HUNDREDS of choices. They simply STOPPED making any choice at all.
The other factor was the promise of the home PC and there were big questions as to whether anyone would put out money for a dedicated console.
Nintendo revived the game console market by tightly controlling cartridge development.

I could do without the crummy PC games but I do run musical instruments on my PC's (MIDI support) and I have one PC for my Yamaha keyboard, one for my Yamaha electric guitar, and one for my Yamaha electric drums. I was playing Rock Band before playing Rock Band was cool.
I first saw multiple computer displays working in 911 dispatch centers where the operators have as many as 8 screens going at one time, across four computers. I thought it was cool as hell frozen over having a PC with multiple displays and now all of my PC's have multiple displays.
That's the one thing I've never seen a video game do. Except the Nintendo DS. But it only does it little.

Baldur's Gate was good stuff, never played KotOR but always heard good things.
But I have a question on Fallout 3, I recently got a xbox with the lastest price drops and have been debating picking this up. Right now I've been playing Left 4 Dead, Sacred 2, Madden '10, Lost Odyessy and Battlefield 1943. I will pick up Modern Warfare 2 and likely Left 4 Dead 2 by the end of the year. Also would like to play through Dead Space, Bioshock, Star Ocean and Blue Dragon (looks silly but made by Mistwalker, so that's a plus).
My question is if Fallout 3 is worth picking it up, with the level cap, is it something you can get burned out on, or is it something you find yourself enjoying longer than expected? I just get worried that once I'm capped I will likely get burned out, no more building my character.

Fallout may be the best game for the Xbox period, not just the best RPG. If you get the Game of the Year version, there's about sixty to seventy hours of game time, and unless you're one of those people that obsessively explores every nook and cranny you won't come within five levels of the cap even after the main quest and the five expansions.

Dragon Age: Origins comes out in just over a week. Its made by the same group who did the Baldur's Gate games and the first Knights of the Old Republic game (this means it will be good since they are considered amongst the best RPG games ever made). While not a sequel they do consider it the spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate II. The only reason I won't be getting in the day it comes out is because I've still got plenty to do on all the Fallout 3 expansion before I'm ready for another game. Plus I've got Grand Theft Auto IV sitting here waiting for me (I put a couple of hours into it and it just didn't click for me yet but it might seeing as it took Oblivion that long before becoming my heroin for several months).
I was thinking about picking up Dragon Age even though I have tons of games I haven't worked through and Gamefly. BioWare is just the illest when it comes to storytelling. Mass Effect was mindblowing.

Oh I'm an explorer.. my buddy played the game a capped (prior to the increase) around 80% of the main story. But he didn't know there was a cap so wasted some perks on things like "gain an extra level" and "have animals fight with you" thinking in the long run these might be helpful.
I plan on borrowing his copy to start a game up after I finish Lost Odyessy to test before getting the GoTY for myself, mainly because after a JRPG it's nice to play an American one, was considering Oblivion, played Morrowind and liked it, but I think Fallout will be my choice. Thanks.

Well, the third expansion, Broken Steel, raises the level cap from 20 to 30 and once you hit about level 25 it takes foooorrrrrrever to level up. So you should be alright.
Oblivion is fun, it's basically the same game but with elves and magic instead of rocket launchers and mutants. Fallout is better IMHO.

Yea, made by the same people, so I assumed they would be about the same. Fallout is newer which has to give it the edge even if all other things are equal.
Yea he hasn't touched it since the Alaska or Pitts expansion, so I wanted to get into it so we could explore the newer areas together, in a way.
In the subject of first person gunning RPG's, have you looked at Borderlands at all? I wasn't a huge fan of the art style used so I've stayed clear, but from what I read it's like Fallout + Deus Ex + MMORPG.

I'm going to get fallout just because it's been said to a fantastic game.

I've pre-ordered Forza Motorsport 3 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (Prestige Edition). Dragon Age looks good and I'll probably pick that up.

Fallen Earth is pretty cool. Sandbox MMO, and different from most MMO's out there, which is a big plus. I've been slacking on it and mainly crafting however, still in Sector One.
You'll have to mention if Borderlands is any good or not.

I've been trying to decide if I wanted to get that. Usually my console gaming goes on the wayside because I'm usually involved in PC MMO's, but BioWare is king, and if it's anything like Mass Effect in terms of quality it will be awesome.
I wish it had a co-op mode, however.

FE is nice once I got past the awful character animations. It is a refreshing change in the MMO genre. I'm really looking forward to APB... http://www.apb.com

I recently bought all the expansion packs for Fallout 3 so I'm now playing through it for the 3rd time. I put 94 hours into it on the first two trips and I could easily equal that this time since I'm trying to do all the expansion stuff plus all the stuff I didn't get to do the first two times. This game is massive and you really can put that much time into it. Though it will be a while before I catch up to Baldurs Gate 2 or Oblivion as I think I've probably put over 500 hrs into the former and 300 into the latter.
I still haven't bought any of the expansiosn for Fallout 3, which is funny, since Fallout is one of my favorite game series. Something about that future-retro vibe always makes me smile.
That and headshots.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is APB going to use the Guild Wars sub model, aka buy the game, no monthly fees? I don't think I'd buy APB with the monthly fee (I already pay enough subs as it is) but if it's in the Guild Wars model I'll likely try it.

I'm honestly not sure. I recently canceled all my subs so I am open for one or 2.

Currently I have EQ2, Champions and Fallen Earth going, though I think I'm about to cancel Champions. For some reason it was fun at first, but got old, especially after all the up and down patches.
I'm one of those nerds desperately trying to make it until SWtoR comes out .

I'm on the fence there. SWG still pains me.

I'm not familiar with APB, but it will basically depend on the game style usually for monthly fees. Taking Guild Wars, when you are fighting it is you and your party only. Looking at MMO's like WoW or FFXI where when you are on the field you can find other people running around.
Normally games like Guide Wars or Monster Hunter that use the hub system do not have monthly fees. I can't think of any off the top of my head that do.

True, but different people behind each game. When Old Republic comes out it's likely to be the final nail in the coffin for SWG.

Pre-CU SWG was such a wonderful game. My wife and I had a wonderful combo too. I was a Commando/Smuggler and she was a Combat Medic. We would take down crowds in PvP action with just the 2 of us.

Unfortunately I never got to play Galaxies pre-CU. I only know of this era though word of mouth. I tried the game post CU, but couldn't get into it.

(emphasis mine)
I'm going to have to disagree:

Also have the game on my desktop as I type this.
Soul Edge/Soul Blade is playable via PSX Emulator, and work on the arcade board's emulation through MAME is ongoing.
All the Neo-Geo KOFs are emulated perfectly as well. Ditto for CPS3 games (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure; Street Fighter III).
There's quite a few fighters on the PC, but most are achieved through emulation.
