""Those who resell recalled children's products are not only breaking the law, they are putting children's lives at risk," said Inez Tenenbaum, the recently confirmed chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The crackdown affects sellers ranging from major thrift-store operators such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army to everyday Americans cleaning out their attics for yard sales, church bazaars or - increasingly - digital hawking on eBay, Craigslist and other Web sites."
Seriously folks this is getting just plain nuts. How much do we really want the government into our everyday lives? How long before we get taxed on these items we sell too?

It will. I am hoping that this recent showing at Town Hall meetings is an indication the public is FINALLY willing to stand up.
We do not have much time left to save this country, if we even can.

I think we have. The pain that we would endure to bring back the liberty we once had would be far too much for most Americans.

Some of those recalls are just plain dumb. I mean seriously, a KILLER HOODED SWEATSHIRT?
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09299.html
"CPSC received one report of a death involving a 3-year-old boy in Fresno, Calif. He was strangled when the drawstring on the hooded sweatshirt that he was wearing became stuck on a playground set."
Sad but recalling a sweatshirt over a freak accident seems a bit extreme and overreactive.
Some of these things could wind up being antiques. I just picked up an old AM/FM radio with tubes that still works, but looking at the design (I happen to be a radio technician by trade) the radio is dangerous as all heck if you don't plug it in the right way because the cord wasn't polarized and the wrong way makes the metal chassis hot 110VAC. Basically like sticking your finger in a light socket. I cut the plug off and put a polarized plug on it so that can't happen anymore. It's a neat old radio and I bench tested it and aligned it right up. I'd be ticked if somebody told me that's illegal to be buying curiosities and antiques like that.
Some good old toys had lead paint on them. Are those illegal? What if they're sold to collectors instead of kids? What point is being overprotective?
I remember when I was a kid we used to play with lawn darts, "JARTS" they were called. Kids throwing big heavy pointed objects up in the air was probably dangerous and not the most brilliant plan ever devised, but it was fun and allowed for some very valuable skill development in first aid rescue.

My emotions, without guidance from my mind, agree with: "if we even can."

The second-hand stores we go to won't buy stuff if it's on a recall list. We're asked to check everything before they'll consider buying it from us, and we're just wanting to declutter all the old baby products.

I like the way you put that. That is precisely how I feel sometimes...

So Congress and Bush start the process of making a law in response to Mattel importing toxic toys from China. By the time it gets passed and enforced it turns out Mattel is exempt, small businesses who make toys from all natural materials you can count on one hand need to test their products and second hand sales whcih are charitable organizations and yard sales feel the brunt of inspectors. Way to go Obama, you see why people are freaking out about ambiguous powers you are trying to grab in health care and control of the internet?
