I have decided to try my hand in homebrewing once I get home out of this dirt hole that is Afghanistan. I have been researching it all and find it very facinating. I also believe it will be a great addition to my other favorite pastime.... Golf.

I have a lot of empty space at home and the wife and I agree that making some good beer would be a great way to fill it.

Are there any homebrewers around here interested in giving some starter tips and recipes for a rookie homebrewer? Also, I plan to (if my initial simple setup proves moderately succesful) build a fairly large operation, so any ideas on that would be appreciated as well.

I don't home brew myself, but a friend of mine here does. Private ERJohnson, tell him I sent you. He brews all sorts of beer and I'm more than sure he would be happy to help out a Vet. Particularly one wise enough to fill his home with home brew equipment rather than children. ;)

Ill do that. I have a few of those other things too, what do we call them, oh yeah, children. I keep them locked in the attic (Far away from the beer)

I don't do it myself, but have helped a friend a few times. It's a lot of fun, especially when you start experimenting with different ingredients.

My only piece of advice is to really focus on what you're doing and don't have a lot of distractions. It's a much more exact science than most people think. The least little thing can mean the difference between having 10 cases of nectar of the gods vs 10 cases of moldy crap in your basement.

I think Cav Scout also brews... you could try a private to him too. ER would know for sure.

Eventually, I would think both of them will see this thread though.

I have never brewed myself - too much volume; too little time - but have been acquainted with home brew since I was 14... my older brother got me drunk for the first time on his brew, which was very similar in characteristics to Anchor Steam except it was about 11% alcohol and it was a bit yeasty because he had no flocculant and his filtration method was rather crude. He spent a week in jail when his hobby caught the attention of the local constabulary. He was 19. ;)

Good ol' days... ;)
