Remarks of President Barack Obama
Ramadan Message
Washington, DC
On behalf of the American people – including Muslim communities in all fifty states – I want to extend best wishes to Muslims in America and around the world. Ramadan Kareem.
Ramadan is the month in which Muslims believe the Koran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, beginning with a simple word – iqra. It is therefore a time when Muslims reflect upon the wisdom and guidance that comes with faith, and the responsibility that human beings have to one another, and to God.
Like many people of different faiths who have known Ramadan through our communities and families, I know this to be a festive time – a time when families gather, friends host iftars, and meals are shared. But I also know that Ramadan is a time of intense devotion and reflection – a time when Muslims fast during the day and perform tarawih prayers at night, reciting and listening to the entire Koran over the course of the month.
These rituals remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam’s role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings.
For instance, fasting is a concept shared by many faiths – including my own Christian faith – as a way to bring people closer to God, and to those among us who cannot take their next meal for granted. And the support that Muslims provide to others recalls our responsibility to advance opportunity and prosperity for people everywhere. For all of us must remember that the world we want to build – and the changes that we want to make – must begin in our own hearts, and our own communities.
This summer, people across America have served in their communities – educating children, caring for the sick, and extending a hand to those who have fallen on hard times. Faith-based organizations, including many Islamic organizations, have been at the forefront in participating in this summer of service. And in these challenging times, this is a spirit of responsibility that we must sustain in the months and years to come.
Beyond America’s borders, we are also committed to keeping our responsibility to build a world that is more peaceful and secure. That is why we are responsibly ending the war in Iraq. That is why we are isolating violent extremists while empowering the people in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan. That is why we are unyielding in our support for a two-state solution that recognizes the rights of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security. And that is why America will always stand for the universal rights of all people to speak their mind, practice their religion, contribute fully to society and have confidence in the rule of law.
All of these efforts are a part of America’s commitment to engage Muslims and Muslim-majority nations on the basis of mutual interest and mutual respect. And at this time of renewal, I want to reiterate my commitment to a new beginning between America and Muslims around the world.
As I said in Cairo, this new beginning must be borne out in a sustained effort to listen to each other, to learn from each other, to respect one another, and to seek common ground. I believe an important part of this is listening, and in the last two months, American embassies around the world have reached out not just to governments, but directly to people in Muslim-majority countries. From around the world, we have received an outpouring of feedback about how America can be a partner on behalf of peoples’ aspirations.
We have listened. We have heard you. And like you, we are focused on pursuing concrete actions that will make a difference over time – both in terms of the political and security issues that I have discussed, and in the areas that you have told us will make the most difference in peoples’ lives.
These consultations are helping us implement the partnerships that I called for in Cairo – to expand education exchange programs; to foster entrepreneurship and create jobs; and to increase collaboration on science and technology, while supporting literacy and vocational learning. We are also moving forward in partnering with the OIC and OIC member states to eradicate polio, while working closely with the international community to confront common health challenges like H1N1 – which I know is of particular to concern to many Muslims preparing for the upcoming hajj.
All of these efforts are aimed at advancing our common aspirations – to live in peace and security; to get an education and to work with dignity; to love our families, our communities, and our God. It will take time and patient effort. We cannot change things over night, but we can honestly resolve to do what must be done, while setting off in a new direction – toward the destination that we seek for ourselves, and for our children. That is the journey that we must travel together.
I look forward to continuing this critically important dialogue and turning it into action. And today, I want to join with the 1.5 billion Muslims around the world – and your families and friends – in welcoming the beginning of Ramadan, and wishing you a blessed month. May God’s peace be upon you.

I attempt the fasting every year. Healthy for ya, and I have Muslim friends who are also fasting. Helps to not be the only one. Only they always do much better. :)

When I was taking world religion classes in college, I interviewed a couple Buddhist friends for one of my college papers. I also interviewed a Hindu Priest and his staff. In both cases we also discussed Islam and Christianity. In American one can practice about any religion one wants to..
If you were in Saudi Arabia, could you openly practice Buddhism?

I realize he is a Reverend Wright Christian and probably is an apostate. Just curious. Why wouldn't anyone feel OK with it? Fasting can be a great way to detoxify the system and in many cases increases mental awareness. I fasted for Ramadan with my father and we, like many Muslims, donate the money we'd otherwise be spending on food to those in need. So yes, Happy Ramadan, and the selflessness of many, if not most, who practice it.

PICKTHAL: Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the Religion of Truth, until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low.
SHAKIR: Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Messenger have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.

Sura 9:
1. A (declaration) of immunity from Allah and His Messenger, to those of the Pagans with whom ye have contracted mutual alliances:-
2. Go ye, then, for four months, backwards and forwards, (as ye will), throughout the land, but know ye that ye cannot frustrate Allah (by your falsehood) but that Allah will cover with shame those who reject Him.
3. And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger, to the people (assembled) on the day of the Great Pilgrimage,- that Allah and His Messenger dissolve (treaty) obligations with the Pagans. If then, ye repent, it were best for you; but if ye turn away, know ye that ye cannot frustrate Allah. And proclaim a grievous penalty to those who reject Faith.
4. (But the treaties are) not dissolved with those Pagans with whom ye have entered into alliance and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor aided any one against you. So fulfil your engagements with them to the end of their term: for Allah loveth the righteous.
5. But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
6. If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah. and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge.
The Sura is in context with the Battle of Tabuk. It's clear that the the verse you cite is in regard to those who persist in fighting, which even as still cruel, is a hell of a lot more than God allowed the children of the tribes of Canaan.
REGARDLESS, even IF the Quran were to endorse the wanton killing of non-aggressing unbelievers (which it doesn't), the book itself does not kill a single person. Islam as a religion does not bring harm to anybody. It's entirely up to the individual to act as he or she will. Religious fault is a fallacy, harbored by those who thrive on fear and who lack the will to understand individuals, choosing rather to subscribe to obtuse generalization.
Anybody who believes that the Quran (or any other book) is a problem, or source of any problem (other than being extremely boring at times), has no idea what they are talking about.

Here is one man's opinion; Islam is religious-political-cultural ideology What many Muslims and non-Muslims alike fail to realize is that Islam is not a religion in the same way "religion" is understood in the West. Philip Hitti, the late Lebanese-American scholar who taught at Princeton University for nearly fifty years, was a leading expert on the history of Arabs and Islam. One of his books has three parts: Islam as Religion, Islam as State, and Islam as Culture. Whether Muslims are aware of it or not, orthodox Islam is a threefold system—a religious-political-cultural ideology—with the goal to subjugate the world to itself. Source: Ansewing Islam.... Several points:
1. He says that he lived in a "majority Muslim nation," but does not say where.
2. Not all Muslim nations practice the strict form of Sharia law that is offensive to basic human rights.
3. He cherry-picks parts of the Koran and Bible to make his point; not all Muslims and NOT ALL CHRISTIANS follow every part of the Koran and Bible respectively. I rarely see Christians giving up all that they own to become priests of Christ a la Matthew 19:29, but it's there! Oh and the Levitical laws? Only one is harped upon (homosexuality), but the rest are not followed.
All religions can lead to great misfortune or great benefits. Islam is no different in this regard.
The current culture of the Arabian peninsula, and its appeal to the frustrated and war-torn youth of Middle Eastern nations is a HUGE problem. Islam is not. Deal with the Wahabists, not the peaceful Indonesians.

I could make the same argument for certain forms of Christianity by cherry-picking different sects.
Christianity is a culture: take a look at the fundamentalist sect of the latter day saints! They've taken religious culture to a NEW level! They dress in antiquated garb, they create communities that are solely composed of their members, and they seek domination of their home country and total conversion of all peoples within.
I'm not bashing Christianity, nor am I praising Islam: if I had my way, every human being would take the time to develop their own spiritual pathway and seek enlightenment on their own terms. I'm merely seeking to dispel the misconceptions about a different culture, insofar as a religion is being SOLELY identified with one problematic interpretation of it!

And therein lies the fallacy of your argument.
1. I said Muslims, not Muhammad. Moses killed people. Jacob killed people. David led wars and killed people. It would be intellectually dishonest of me to claim that the entire Jewish religion was hell-bent on killing non-believers (Gentiles) because of what their founding leaders did.

The ones doing it are claiming it's the religion.
Both radical and non-radical muslims claim they are following the true religion. Who am I to determine which one is correct? If non-radical muslims are tired of being associated with the radicals, then it is up to them to make that disassociation, not me.
For example, you mentioned Phelps. I'd be willing to claim that just about 100% of christian sects have denounced Phelps and his beliefs. There is no ambiguity within the christian community, or their message to the rest of the world, about whether or not Phelps represents Christianity. They make it clear that he doesn't.
There are some within Islam who criticize the radicals in their religion. But that voice is not loud nor strident enough. For example, when a cartoon of Muhammad was published, muslims took to the street in protest, some threatening to kill those responsible. However, when 3000 Americans were slaughtered in the name of Muhammad, where were the Muslims filling the streets in protest?

My religion is self-improvement, non-aggression, and being happy - religion and "way of life" are synonymous.
Mormons aren't out and about slaughtering non-Christians, but the religion they follow indicates that it was right to do so at one point. How did God order the Israeli tribes to treat the non-believers of Canaan? Yet that doesn't mean that any Jew or Christian who kills a non-Christian is the fault of the bible. Murder was justified when God commanded it, is it the Bible's fault if a man kills another today and claims it was justified because God told him to do it?

It's logically erroneous to bypass the responsibility of the conscious individual to act or restrain himself physically, and claim any fault in an inanimate concept such as a belief. The Quran has not killed a single human being. Islam has not killed a single human being. Nor has the Bible, the Torah, Christianity, or Judaism. People, simply, kill. It happens. No, it's not. It happens. It won't stop happening. Oppression and strife predated Islam, and will thrive once it's dead.
It's the pseudo intellectual who tries to assume any other cause for murder other than the physical reality.
And it's the intellectually dishonest who look at the reality of countless acts of violence done in the name of a religion, and claim the religion has nothing to do with it.
This is exactly why moderate muslims get painted with the radicals - because they refuse to accept the reality of what others are doing in the name of their religion.

You may have something there. But then again many do not like reality and would like to look at things through rose coloured glasses.
