I took the blind taste test. Three out of three:

Absolut vs. Svensk

I picked Absolut.

Smoother, sweeter, less harsh.

The Svensk was "mediciny," harsh, more biting, finished a lot harder.

The drinks were 1 TBS. of vodka each, 1 tsp. of maraschino cherry juice. Vodka was chilled.

It's worth it if you enjoy vodka. Don't go cheap.

Hmm...vodka's not something I drink on a regular basis. Wait, is that what's in a martini? Hmm....

If it's a good martini, yes, but top shelf or higher shelf only.

Get them dry - dry as a bone.

Edit - no not dry - that means either dry vermouth, or lots of it. I admit, I don't know booze. Well, just vodka.

My wife picked up some Gordon's vodka awhile back. The stuff tasted like straight up hairspray. You definitely get what you pay for. My personal favorite is Turi Vodka from Estonia.

Crap........once you mix it with cola and juice it doesn't matter....

I would probably puke if I had to taste Vodka straight up.....

So, I will continue to buy bottom shelf vodka.....after all, I'm not an "elite" in anything I do.

And BTW TM....you still haven't told me why you smacked me...........

Of course now I'll have to be trying all these on other taste tests. Soon as I hit the lottery, that is.

Freakin Goose is like 30 for a small.

Gotcha. If I'm drinking anything stronger than wine (which is about twice a year, lol) I usually get a girly martini of some kind. Drives my dad and my sister nuts ;)

I did two shots of vodka, once. Tryin' to keep up with the boys...I nearly passed out.

Oh - this was it. You once told me about studies or whatever indicating the brand doesn't matter.

You have a point though, but I enjoy the crisp essence of vodka. I drink it near straight, ice cold, neat, usually with a tsp of something sugary, like the maraschino juice.

Consider the bone picked! :D

Well it took me long enough to figure you out and find the thread :))

It was actually a MSM story about vodka...they blindfolded supposed connoisseurs of vodka....and had them taste various brands....from the cheapest to the most expensive.....

They couldn't tell the difference.

Bottom line..........alcohol content/percentage is what it is.........you can get from zero to drunk cheaply or spend big bucks....the end result is the same.

Top shelf vodka should not be mixed with anything. It should be served ice cold, straight up with a twist of lemon at most.

For those not sure, a Martini is traditionally Gin with Vermouth. The less Vermouth the drier the Martini. Vodka Martini's are perhaps more popular now since many of the flavored Martinis that have become so common are made with Vodka since the taste is cleaner and with Gin you have the inherent flavor of juniper to overcome and consider.

If you can not drink vodka straight it's still worth buying a better brand as the more expensive vodka's are distilled from better quality grains and are filtered more making it smoother and less hangover prone. Better vodka's are filtered at least 4 times before bottling.

Hangovers are not just due to excessive EtOH and dehydration, they also occur from impurities in the alcohol consumed.

Well, that's just about the most informed paragraph about liquor I've ever read.

Thank you. I'm not a beer or wine drinker but enjoy fine distilled spirits. All alcohols are distilled from some kind of grain or berries and knowing what they are distilled from can helps understand the complexities of the flavor. Mixed drinks while appealing at times are often nothing more than sugary concoctions to hide the taste of the alcohol. Top shelf distilled products can be enjoyed for the tastes created and intended by their master distillers.

Most people do not realize it but a major reason for hangovers is dehydration. You have two things working against you. The volume you drink of course needs to come out as urine plus ethyl alcohol inhibits a hormone called Anti-Diuretic Hormone or ADH. This hormone helps regulate the osmolarity of your blood and urine. Alcohol inhibits this so in essence makes you urinate more, leading to dehydration.

On thing you can do to help prevent this is drink an extra water once the party is over and before you go to bed. If you keep a mental tally of how many drinks you had that evening, drink 4-6 ounces of water for each alcoholic drink. It wont prevent the hangover but will make it less intense. Hydrate more as soon as you wake up as well.

You're welcome! I don't drink enough to have a hangover (anymore) but I'm someone will find that useful! I actually did know that one of the reasons for a hangover was dehydration....but that's what happenes when your momma's a nurse :)
