Ok, I have had them both and they both suck in the heat. Both have their pro's and con's.
Is there something better out there? And will it take the heat of the desert?

Both of them use a hard drive. Maybe try something that uses flash memory instead.

Worse yet, the flash cards simply melt.

not something with a card, but something with built in flash memory. a sony walkman. sandisk sansa. an ipod nano or shuffle or the flash version of the zune.
and what temps are we talking about here?

Like everyone said, get something with a solid state drive.

and what temps are we talking about here?i concur. i have a 8 GB e280 sansa and a 4 GB sansa. you can put a micro card in em for an additional two GB but for the desert the 8gb capacity is fairly good. a flash based memory device is more robust physically. i still use mine for exercise or on sporting activities.

alternatively you could get a cushioned water proof hard case for a hard drive based device. i got a pelican hard case for my hard drive based archos 7 wifi internet media tablet with 320 GBs of storage.

those folks make many of the hard cases the military uses for thier equipment. like the cases used for NVGs. or spare electronic cards for radars and other high tech systems.

but with that option he might run into the same trouble of the music melting in the heat...unless Cav spends the extra and goes for the copper plate option.
