It sounds like she can't be charged.

"I don't have enough courage to hold a gun — but I can hold a knife."

"I am confessing because I promised I would do so before becoming 18 — to avoid upsetting my family."

Man, it is like something that comes out of fiction... from Japan.

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes - ah

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes goes - ooh

(Ooh) But I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her
Yes I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me

Tall, (and) tan, (and) young, (and) lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, I smile - but she doesn't see (doesn't see)

It's very predictable that when the available punishment is unsuitable to meet the crime that criminals will game the law like this horrible monster did.

The death penalty should always be an option for all offenders. If she's too young to understand the consequences, big fat hairy deal. So's the bear that broke into a house in Colorado last week and mauled a woman, and it's dead meat.

Rita the Ripper here didn't just use a knife as a weapon, she used a far-too-liberal law of forgiving youthful indiscretion. In just a few short months, her record will be sealed by a liberal judge and she can apply for a job as a Nurse Ratchet without any criminal record at all.

Her logic in confessing is that at 17, the law won't charge her, she'll have a nice squeaky clean record and she'll have beaten the game of justice.

Fortunately, thanks to modern technologies and communications, her crimes are a matter of permanent record ANYWAY regardless of what any stupid liberal justice system has to say about it. Liberal judges can't expunge the internet.

When a little girl can outsmart the law, the law is stupid.

Like confessing at 17 won't upset her family.

This teenager is one sick, manipulative, twisted puppy.

She probably believes that her family has no values other than what the law says it has.

So long as she's within the law, her family has no other pride.

My mom drilled into my head that we have pride as a family and I wasn't allowed to run around in public with torn or tattered clothes. I had school clothes and play clothes and all were to be clean and in good repair when leaving the house as a representative of the Doane home which she kept.

The family is the basic building block of society and family has a higher set of moral and ethical values than the law does. The law is, at best, a least common denominator for behavior. It's not the gold standard by a long shot.
