yep.

I've read so much about this movie and Cameron is once again going to be at the forefront of a revolution and breakthrough in film-making once again the way he did when he seamlessly integrated CGI with live-action movie in Terminator 2. this time, I read that with his new technology and technique of advanced photorealism, it would absolutely blur the line between CGI and real life. apparently this film has been 15 years in the making. apparently he wanted to make this movie immediately after Titanic, but back then the technology still wasn't available and had he gone through, the budget wouldve been impossibly and prohibitively expensive (remember Titanic is still the most expensive movie ever made and Cameron got lucky teenage girls flocked the movie again and again. I saw that movie after reading so much about it and how Cameron was a perfectionist, paying a lot of attention even to the smallest thing with Titanic to make the ship an authentic replica...)

but he just better pray for Titanic-like box-office numbers. I read the budget for this movie is $400 million

but this movie is definitely on my list of to-see movies.

Dumb question of the day:

What is it about...?

My understanding is that it is set in the future and the military creates alien life-forms that can be "possessed" by humans for combat... I think.

Huh. Interesting. I'll go if it's at the $3 theatre. They're picky, though. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(2009_film)

The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully, is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body. Jake travels to Pandora, a lush rainforest-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms – some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race that humans consider primitive, but are actually more evolutionarily advanced than humans. Standing three meters tall, with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na’vi live in harmony with their unspoiled world. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies that are controlled by a human 'driver' through a technology that links the driver’s mind to their Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Na’vi female, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.

Over time, Jake integrates himself into Neytiri's clan, and begins to fall in love with her. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na’vi – forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

One article I read said its likely an Oscar nominee. In watching the trailer it has a video game look to it, like whats used for video sequences in games. I dont like that look at all.

i am looking forward as well and will see it on the imax.....

they bragged that they solved the "deadeye" problem they had with films lilke the polar express, which really took away form the expressions of the face......

if they did indeed solve that problem, this will be a start of many more movies like this......

hopefully, this would finally lead to a dragonlance set of movies......

and yes, i know there is already a movie of the first book, but it was so god awful horrible, its very existence should be stricken from all public and private knowledge........

If one can get past the "military/industrial complex" ideology that has been described so far in external reviews it will be an awesome movie with extreme special effects. As in most movies of this caliber it is a commentary on the similar level as the Odyssey by Homer. It is a peep hole into the human condition where obstacles of many descriptions are overcome.

That's my take away IMO.

I hope Shyamalan doesn't screw it up with a "Dark" and "Brooding" theme. Hopefully it will appeal to the younger crowd.

Done right, the Chronicles would make excellent movie fodder...chances of that happening...eh...

Just for your information, in case it offends some of your sensibilities, I took Avatar to basically be a scifi retelling of 'evil Europeans stealing land from the native, goodly peoples.'

This kind of theme doesn't bother me, but I'm just throwing the info out there...

This is why I kind of hate cool trailers. You can make anything look good in a trailer. With that said, James Cameron has really pushed the envelope again.

The subject matter holds no interest for me though.

Spooky....hubby just said after watching the trailer that this was a sci fy version of Pocahontas. Still, good story line...worth reinventing and retelling to this generation..even if it is with moon people and evil military master minds.

does anyone else get really tired of movies that depict our military/government as some evil mastermind entity? I mean really..it's getting old ya know?

I'll go see the film...looks amazing!

The initial reviews from "avatar day" - in which 10 minutes of footage were released and shown to select audiences, were pretty horrific.
Who knows.. the guy makes a movie every 10 years now, so it better be good
