The bow stem of USS New York was cast using steel from the World Trade Center.

The ship will be Commissioned on November 7th of this year. Read more about it here: http://www.ussnewyork.com/

This is a fitting tribute to those who gave their all on that fateful day.

Well, that is something at least.

Sure wish they would go faster in reconstruction though. Not that is really possible now.

The article says it is an "amphibious transport dock ship"... do you have any idea what LPD stands for?

I believe LPD means "Landing Platform Dock".

He's a very special individual. Graduate of the Naval Academy and retired from the U.S. Navy.

He was thrilled to have the opportunity to help with the procurement of the Tower's steel so this floating monument to the heroes who gave their all that day could be built.

I'm so sorry for your lose. The firemen, paramedics, and police that rushed into those burning buildings that day are the real heroes. They ran into a situation that everyone else was trying their best to run from.

Please accept my deepest condolences for your lose.

It is indeed not forgotten, although I am a bit dismayed at the poor response to this thread. I would have thought that a great number of people would have posted their support for this ship in here by now.

Sorry, Jim, just got here. This is pretty awesome!

Bella, that's neat that your brother in law was involved.

Twinheart, I am terribly sorry for your loss and pray that no American ever forgets people like your cousin's heroism.

Placing metal from the towers in the bow of the ship was a great thing to do. Where ever that vessel goes, the remembrance of the lives that were lost that day will be very visible.

Pretty cool. I also like how Libs never come to these types of post. Their face is empty

thanks so much to all for your kind words - it is here that I take comfort that he, and all those murdered on that day, are not forgotten - Ground Hero may be moving slowly toward completion, but knowing that a piece of that place, where so much heroism, selflessness and bravery was shown, is travelling with the greatest military force the world has ever seen makes me proud - I know now that my cousin is there, ready to face down danger and continue to protect and defend, just as he did on that day. I can think of no higher honor - again, my thanks to all - twin

I imagine the commissioning ceremony will be very poignant.

The principal mission of LPD 17-class amphibious transport dock ships is to transport and deploy the necessary combat and support elements of Marine expeditionary units and brigades. The ship will carry approximately 720 troops and have the capability of transporting and debarking air cushion (LCAC) or conventional landing craft and expeditionary fighting vehicles (EFV), augmented by helicopters or vertical take off and landing aircraft (MV 22). These ships will support amphibious assault, special operations and expeditionary warfare missions through the first half of the 21st century.
