I am of Conservative beliefs, and believe there needs to be something done about how how Health care bills are paid. From my own personnel dealings with how the system of health care bill collectors, and collection agencies work with sick people some thing needs to be done. As I understand it 60% of bankrupt people in America come to that state from medical billing.
I feel instead of changing the whole system like Obama would like I feel his idea would be to resolve how collection of medical billing is done.
1. Did you know that health care collector can push the courts to place them ahead of every other bill you owe on like your home, taxes, medication, and ect.
2. Did you know 60% of people entering bankrupt are a result of medical billing.
I feel the Government should pass laws to setup a method of payment of medical bill without forcing people to go bankrupt.

So instead of getting costs in line with reality (remember the french get it done all ghay and socialist for 10.5% of GDP) we should just keep getting screwed? We need MASSIVE reform in the health insurance and tort industries. Without cost cutting we are stuck in and endless cycle.

Those issues could be addressed also as you mentioned. But one thing I know that hits a person that wants to pay their health bill even when their employer pays 80%, and the employee pays 20% it sink a person real quick. There needs to be some ground rules which there are not at this time. I believe at no time should a health care bill collector should be able to move themselves in front of a person paying their house, water, tax, electric, food, medication, and etc. A person should not have to pay more than 5% of their income on medical debt.
Lawsuit reform is a good idea so long as you are dealing with the amount the lawyer can collect as a contingency. The purposed of that money is to care for the injured not fill the lawyers pocket with 40%. Once that money is gone that person ends up on welfare for everyone to care for. I do feel a Doctor that screws up should pay far more than the tax payer should have to.

Funny........a few months ago it was the 'evil mortgage' industry that was causing everyone to go bankrupt..........

My boss is on the local hopital's board, after a recent meeting he told us that over $.50 of every dollar billed out from the hospital here goes toward covering unpaid bills. So it seems to me that those of us responsible enough to either carry insurance or pay our bills are getting stuck with the bills of deadbeats and illegals.
Personally I think immigration reform (kicking the illegals out and seizing their assets) would go a long way to help the health care system as well as several other sectors.

If I'm understanding your posts correctly, your assuming many who file for bankruptcy due to high medical bills...have insurance of some sort? Do I have that right? If I don't..please disregard the remainder of my post.
1) When tragic/trauma medical issues hits a family, they loose allot more then their health. They can loose everything if they did not think ahead to cover themselves in an event such as traumatic health issues. That is to say, if they aren't properly covered with medical and life insurance, their bills can most certainly take their home, assets and savings away to cover the expense. Did you think medical care was free to those who have assets? Many find themselves applying for State disability, thinking that will cover the gaps while they heal. Others, who have no such medical coverage due to cost or their employer does not offer it, sink into a pit of financial ruin for years to come with little to nothing to buffer the weight of their illness. They are put into the State system, and those bills are covered by the tax payer...ie you and me.
Now, having said that..and seeing we have two completely different groups here...lets hit the obvious first. Those with assets and no health coverage or limited health coverage. Exactly what do you propose this group pay and not pay? If paying your utilities and medications takes up all your expendable income..then you are not in the first group then are you? Have a fat savings account, new cars, nice home, maybe even a vacation home, boats/motorcycles whathaveyou, a 401 retirement account....but don't want to 'waste' or throw away that money on services rendered for a health condition?..I say tough. Pay what you owe and plan ahead next time. Many of these supposed bankrupt families are claiming a bankruptcy in order to avoid loosing any assets even though they received services to become well. That's stealing..that's thievery...that's there tough luck. Next time put down the new purchases of a car or IPhon..and invest in some insurance first. I mean duh! Sell that huge home you really can't afford..buy something you can afford..and use the remainder of the money to pay what you owe. Sell that boat..sell that motorcycle, trade in your new car for something you can maintain cheaply while you recover both physically and financially...whatever you have to do. Get over it. Live and learn.
Now the second group...the month to month paycheck earners...they usually don't have assets like the first group. Hell, they usually don't even have credit cards much less homes or other real assets. A bankruptcy is usually recommended to this group to get out from under the crushing weight of bills they will never be able to pay. These people don't come under the same rules as those with assets, as well they shouldn't. However, they become our burden (taxpayers) anyway.
So exactly what do you propose the asset group to do? Be relieved of their responsibilities in order to keep their assets safe?
