The answer to this question can best be answered by John Taylor Gatto, a former school teacher and author of several books, including Dumbing Us Down, his first book. Gatto has done some great research that clearly shows the true purpose of public (government) school, and that is "to render the common population manageable and to train the next generation into subservience to the state."

He has uncovered some shocking, undeniable facts about our education system. For example, here is a quote from the "Behavioral Teacher Educational Project", one of three documents by Benjamin Bloom that were inserted into every state education department in the country between 1967 and 1974. Gatto writes, "Nothing less than quoting again", 'the impersonal manipulation through schooling of a future America in which few will be able to maintain control over their own opinion', "an America in which (quoting again)" 'each individual receives at birth, a multipurpose identification number which enables employers and other controllers to keep track of their [underlings]', (underlings is my interpretation, everything else came out of the document), and to expose them to the directors subliminal influence of the state education department and the federal department acting through those whenever necessary.'

Here is another quote from Edward Roth's 1906 manifesto, "Social Control". "Plans are underway to replace family, community and church with propaganda, mass-media and education (schooling)...people are only little plastic lumps of dough."

Here is a little known fact about modern schooling in America, in Gatto's words. "Between 1906 and 1920, a handful of world famous industrialists and financiers, together with their private foundations, hand picked University administrators and house politicians, spent more attention and more money toward forced schooling than the national government did. Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller alone spent more money than the government did between 1900 and 1920. In this fashion, the system of modern schooling was constructed outside the public eye and outside the public's representatives." Here is a brief history of how and why public education came to be. http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/historytour/history1.htm

Gatto provides many other revealing facts and quotes like those I've mentioned here in his books and in his articles. I took the information in this post from, "The Shocking Origins of Public Education", a speech given at a homeschooling conference in Vermont by John Gatto. At the bottom of the page there is a link to several other articles by Gatto. http://4brevard.com/choice/Public_Education.htm

Gatto's largest book, The Underground History of American Education, can be read free of charge on his website. http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/chapters/index.htm

Many issues come to light when reading Gatto's work, not only regarding our schools, but our whole society. And this doesn't only apply to the U.S., it applies to the entire world.

Gatto's work gives you an entirely new and different perspective on education. Obama's motive to reach the youth becomes crystal clear from reading Gatto's articles/books.

Heres the link to the teacher Prep. from D.O.E.

Teacher Prep for President Obama 9-8-09 Speech to Students

http://www.ednews.org/articles/teach...-students.html

The part that states "Why is it important that we listen to the president and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of congress, or the govenor?"

That is 100% out of whack teaching our children Pre-K -6th that we are to listen to them? they are elected officials! They are in their positions to listen to their constituents and abide by their wishes NOT the other way around! They are there to represent us! Not dictate!

I hope his speach is nothing more than a pep talk about go to school & do your best, unfortunately I have the feeling that the speech will be used to push other subtle "nudges" to our children like the one I quoted directly from the D.E.O. guide linked above.

I am an involved parent & will reserve the right to share MY value system with my children. I send my children to school to recieve an education and socialize. not to be indoctrinated by an administration.

Another interesting book in this topic would be "Education: Free and Compulsory" by Murray Rothbard.
