Business Owner Fires on 4 Robbers, Killing 2, Police Say
By Christine Hauser AND Sewell Chan
Jennifer S. Altman for The New York Times
Police at the scene of a robbery and killing at 125th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues in Manhattan on Thursday.
Updated, 6:55 p.m. | A 72-year-old Harlem business owner used a shotgun to blast four men who tried to rob his restaurant-supply business Thursday afternoon, killing two and sending two others to the hospital with gunshot wounds, the New York City police said.
The business, the Kaplan Brothers Blue Flame Corporation, at 523 West 125th Street, near Amsterdam Avenue, sells commercial gas and electric ranges, as well as parts and repairs.
The police said that the four would-be robbers entered the business and announced that they were robbing it. One of them took out a Glock 9-mm pistol and started to pistol-whip a 33-year-old employee inside the store. The owner then took out a shotgun and opened fire, striking the four men.

Good.
Once the pistol whipping started taking place, all bets were off...............and that's me just being politically correct in my assessment of the situation as it has been reported.

I'm sure the Bloomberg administration will be making sure that the criminals had their concealed carry permits.
Nice shooting guy, way to prove the right to self defense and wisdom of the 2nd amendment right.

Another couple that we won't have to feed for several years before they're tossed back out into society to burglarize again.

...Yes, that would have prevented this from happening, TIGHTER regulations on law-abiding citizens......
...Notice how, in the article in the link that the author said the shotgun was probably not registered, and had a pistol-type grip...Notice, they didn't have a comment on whether the thieve's 9mm was registered...
...The Lib Media is going to vilify this shop owner, just a hunch...
...In the reporting of that health-club shooting the other day, the media made a point to say the shooter used a "legally obtained" gun...Funny, when they report all other criminal shootings, they NEVER say the shooter didn't follow their ridiculous restrictions, and that they "Illegally obtained" the gun used in the crime......
...I say, GOOD LUCK, to the store owner who DEFENDED himself....He's going to need it!!!......

How do you know the race of the perps?
The race of the business owner?
Persoanlly, I never even gave race a thought in this.
I have no idea on the race of any party involved. I was just refering back to the Obama statement after the professor arrest when he stated that he didn't know the circumstances but gave his ill prepared opinion anyway.

How many times did he fire? If he did one shot, well I'd have to congratulate him on that.

I love good news stories. The two in the hospital are now responsible for the death of their comrades and should be sentenced to life in prison...if not death (which they deserve IMO).

Actually, the author reported that it was the police who said
The police said they did not believe the shotgun — a Winchester 12-gauge pump shotgun with a pistol grip handle — had been registered, as city law requires.
...The Lib Media is going to vilify this shop owner, just a hunch... I heard this story from "the Lib Media" [NYC NPR station] at around 5:15pm.
They reported that the shotgun WAS licensed and no charges would be filed as it was a justifiable shooting.

Hope he doesn't get raked over the coals for this.
That prompted Augusto to pull the 12-gauge, pump-action shotgun and fire three times, cops said. The blasts struck all four men, two of them in the back. One of the perps, James Morgan, 29, fell in the doorway and died outside the building, with a gun near his body. Raylin Footman, 21, who had prior arrests for robbery and weapons charges, collapsed across the street, and later died at St. Luke's Hospital. Two other suspects, Bernard Witherspoon, 21, and Shamel McCloud, 21, were caught a few blocks away.

The way it works in Arizona is they'd be charged under the "Felony Murder Law", which means if anyone, even a co-felon, dies as the result of the commission of the felony the charge is the same as Murder One. The surviving thugs would definitely be facing a death penalty sentence as a very real possibility.
I'd say they're too stupid to live anyway. Four guys robbing WHAT??? A restaurant supply store? Did they expect to find heap big cash there? Restaurants don't buy ovens in cash! The best these idiots could hope to split would be the pocket change the employees had on them. The heist couldn't have topped a hundred bucks on a payday. They'd be lucky to get $20 apiece for this crime.
That would be embarrassing at the Pearly Gates, too.
St. Peter: What brings you gentlemen here?
Robbers: We were robbing a stove shop and the dude shot our asses.
St. Peter: Oh really? Do you know about the Down Elevator?
Robbers: We've heard about it.
St. Peter: Well, you're not getting that. You'll be taking the stairs, morons.

...Yes, I heard that the gun was registered while driving & listening to WABC, (New York)...I let out a yell of, "All right!!! Thank God!!!"...The guy driving in the car next to me gave me a very strange look!!!
...My question is, WHY would the Police issue that statement, prior to confirmation???
Sounds a little strange, doesn't it......
...Did you here the interview of the owner?... He said he tried to talk the thieves into just leaving...This man lost HIS OWN SON in a shooting...
...This man will have to live with the memory of this situation he was FORCED INTO, and also re-live the memory of losing his son...All because some low-lifes wanted to grab some "easy money"...THAT is a CRIME...

I was just waiting for the 1-800 donations number at the end of the vid...hehehe...would have been perfect.
How terrifying that our legislative/elected officials don't seem to get what that vid put so perfectly.

It's very interesting to read how different media cover this story - I read about this in the Post, the Daily News, MSNBC and the NYT - and try to imprint their POV onto an incident where the accounts are consistent. Comparisons to Bernard Goetz, the cost of Mr. Augusto's house, the cigarette butts on the floor of his shop (someone was smoking in a place of business in NYC!), all extraneous to the facts.
Augusto, who tried to talk the thieves out of the store said that he didn't feel like a hero - that he would have felt like a hero if he had been able to get them to walk away. But read the scores of comments after each article - the people of NYC do think he's a hero.
