Reading so many posts regarding the healthcare effort, I just have to weigh in and say there is a way to do this without government driving it. I know there are others that have good healthcare programs but I have to throw in some high points about my policy.
I am with a private non-profit healthcare cooperative. It has the usual string of employed executives, but the Board of Directors is the paying members.
It has a lot of community Medical Centers and you home at one close to you. If you have some reason to want to change, you can.
Everyone is assigned a primary care physician at their home of record. If for some reason you don't get along with you doc......you can change.
You can self-refer if you want to see a specialist
It already has a reaiatively mature electronic records program. Any doc in the system has access to the same document whether you are at your medical home or a specialty center. And, it's highly secure.
You can log in to your own medical records from home.
They run their own pharmacies
The have Urgent Cares which are much less costly to operate that E/D's. If you present at a higher trauma level than they can support, you get referred (or transported if it's that bad) to partnership E/D's. If triage shows you don't need urgent care, you can be appointed for care before you leave.
It predominantly uses Employer memberships but private individuals can join. If you lose your job, you can keep your insurance.
They care
I would not trade my relationship with this organization for any government program. This organization is proof that private enterprise can do this. Let the government find a way to take care of those that don't do for themselves and don't make us pay for it.
