Some things about "Cash for Clunkers" from Eric Peters' site.

Car prices increase in the UK.

Since a "cash for clunkers" was added in the UK, car prices have risen 15%.

* Ford Fiesta (a minicar that is coming to the US next year): £11,570 (10/08) to £13,195
* Vauxhall Insignia (mid-size car, on Epsilon II - Malibu/LaCrosse/Allure): £17,981 (1/09) to £20,430
* Nissan Micra (microcar): £11,200 (9/08) to £12,395

And from the Obama C.A.R.S. programme:

The engine must be disabled upon trade-in and then the car sold as scrap.

THIS PROCEDURE IS NOT TO BE USED BY THE VEHICLE OWNER

Perform the following procedure to disable the vehicle engine.

1. Obtain solution of 40% sodium silicate/60% water. (The Sodium Silicate (SiO2/Na2O) must have a weight ratio of 3.0 or greater.)
2. Drain engine oil for environmentally appropriate disposal.
3. Install the oil drain plug.
4. Since the procedure is intended to render the engine inoperative, drive or move the vehicle to the desired area for disablement.
5. Pour enough solution in the engine through the oil fill for the oil pump to circulate the solution throughout the engine. Start by adding 2 quarts of the solution, which should be sufficient in most cases.

CAUTION: Wear goggles and gloves. Appropriate protective clothing should be worn to prevent silicate solution from coming into contact with the skin.

6. Replace the oil fill cap.
7. Start the engine.
8. Run engine at approximately 2000 rpm (for safety reasons do not operate at high rpm) until the engine stops. (Typically the engine will operate for 3 to 7 minutes. As the solution starts to affect engine operation, the operator will have to apply more throttle to keep the engine at 2000 rpm.)
9. Allow the engine to cool for at least 1 hour.
10. With the battery at full charge or with auxiliary power to provide the power of a fully
charged battery, attempt to start the engine.
11. If the engine will not operate at idle, the procedure is complete.
12. If the engine will operate at idle, repeat steps 7 through 11 until the engine will no
longer idle.
13. Attach a label to the engine that legibly states the following:

This engine is from a vehicle that is part of the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). It has significant internal damage caused by operating the engine with a sodium silicate solution (liquid glass) instead of oil.

Some readers said there will be a HUGE hike on prices for junkyard 302 Ford truck blocks, 231 Buick V6 engines, and 305/350 Chevrolet V8 engines as many of the cars junked will carry those engines. Chrysler 318's could also go.

So essentially the gubment is trying to kill the notion of a cash car for most people. God I love being forced to finance something I don't want to finance.

Well, they are suspending the Cash for Clunkers program after one week.

So I guess it's not going to be much of an issue.

But they've maxed out on the number of cars that were dumped, and that's plenty of good engines that could be used over the 660 and 1,320's of the country, and the bullrings for NASCAR, WoO, and other racers across the country, that were disposed per Obama order.

Even Dale Earnhardt Jr started out buying junkyard engines to build for racing.

This is stupider than the "baby pig slaughter" thought up by FDR in 1933 that caused food shortages for millions.

Automakers, since they have to subsidise along with the UK government their cash-for-clunkers.

Automakers, since they have to subsidise along with the UK government their cash-for-clunkers.

They really should make laws to prevent the companies or the workers from doing things like this during programs like that are done to help the automakers and the economy.

I had heard that the damage to the environment when building is new car, especially the hybrids, is far worse than driving an already made clunker for another ten years.

But this administration wants you to believe they care about the environment ....
