You should have had a category for 'indie', a kind of catch all title for bands that in the eighties would have been signed up by an independent label...

Because I would have said I like indie but I like lots of stuff from The Smiths to U2 so it's hard to pigeonhole myself into one of your categories...

I like The Jam and The Clash and also Elvis Costello but won't categorise myself into one of those categories but a bit of each.....

Except country..........No bloody way......:)).......

I have pop.

While many recent pop artist have borrowed from Electronic Music for inspiration, The vast majority of Electronic Music could not be be described as fitting into the pop genre. The closest thing would be Electro Pop, which would best be described to those unfamiliar with the music as Techno with lyrics and a few elements of rock and/or hip hop.

I don't like glo-sticks enough to listen to techno.

Contrary to popular stereotype, Techno, and by extension, Electronic Music in general is not just music for glow stick wielding ravers that are rolling on E. Techno has a long and complex history that starts with a foundation of Funk and Hip-Hop blended with synthesizer heavy European dance music.

Electronic is just as complex and creative as any other genre of music. At any big Electronic Music Festival (The Detroit Electronic Music Festival [DEMF], for example, is one of the largest in the world) you will see a mix of people from every walk of life, from CEO to Street Preacher, and straight laced to Candy Kid (scene slang for people who do Ecstasy). This year at DEMF, I ran into an 76 year old grandmother on a scooter getting down to some Audion, it was awesome.

I didn't see a choice in the poll that fit exactly, except perhaps "oldies," but that usually applies to the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Okay.:eh:

Here are some recent examples of Electropop. I assure you both are family friendly:

The first is the video for "Skeleton Boy" By Friendly Fires. It is more on the Techno and Rock side of things, with danceable beats, but also rock friendly hooks. Even if you don't like the song, stick with the video, it is awesome:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyA8zfouG4Y

The Second is the video to MGMT's "Electric Feel". This falls on the and Funk side of things with techno influences and a little bit psychedelia thrown in. It's an odd video, but the song is catchy:

Favorties:

Charlie Pride
Buck Owens
Eddie Rabbitt (the early stuff, not the pop)
George Jones
Hank, of course

I really love the music from the 1920s to the 1940s.Oh yeah! Love Big Band. Oldies doesn't usually describe anything. Music from the 90's could be oldies to a 30 year old. For other fossils, it's 40's & 50's. Although, strangely, I like techno too. Maybe because my son writes electronic dance music and he's pretty good.

I like most all forms and styles -- except heavy metal which shatters my spine with "bad vibes" -- literally -- and hard rock which gives me vicious headaches.

But the absolute personal fav -- at the moment -- is the new Irish stuff -- am really into the fiddle, fife, and flute combo they're using in reviving and spreading out access to their old heritage type songs.

Ah - the Ritz. Whitworth Street. Just along from the Hacienda.

Saw a good few bands there while in Manchester (83 - 86). Including a very young Stone Roses just near the end - must have been around June 86 or so. James played there a couple of times as well, I remember..

Happy memories. Though I was a student and therefore some of the memories are a bit hazy...

As to the Smiths - yes, I was a fan, but not that 'passionate' about them. For me, the #1 Manchester band will always be Joy Division.

Anyway the last time I went to the Ritz was to see Ian McCullough, he included in his set Celebration, thought I'd mention that, you being a Joy Division fan and all...:D...
