So none of you are of the "It's a form of Jesus's name and you are taking it in vain" and "unless you are talking to Jesus you can't say that" crowd?

No. And if somone would try that on me I would just tell them if I wanted to say "Jesus______" or "God__________" I'd just say it.
And honestly if I want to swear I can put together a string of words that would make an old sailior blush in shame, so why would I use "geez' to swear? I am the winner of the unofficial Girl Scout swear-a-thon after all ;)

It's either a substitute for Jesus or the plural of Gee.
The listener has to make the decision.
and what's wrong with **** ?

No. I use it all the time but I spell it "Jeez". To me it's a contraction of Gee Whiz or the ever popular Cheez Whiz.
Anyone who is from Chicago uses Jeez all the time.

Know what's fun? Different cases. It's a variation representing even more weirded outness.

Like Sheeeesh, or Gosh, Dog Gone-it, Dag Nabbit, Holy Cow/Makeral, Gee Wiz, Geez falls short of saying J---- C-----, it is but an ordinary way to express any number of emotions in response to distaste or astonishment in liu of a swear word. I don't see any connection to being blasphemous what-so-ever. Though the suggestion is sometimes there that the words might be used as a replacement, the intent to use an expression that does not create a verbal insult unto anothers ears is worthy of commendation to the restraint that is used in mixed company, by the one that delivers the verbal expression.. Freakin' kinda pushes the envelop, though the same applies..

Maybe Geez is what Jesus' friends called him:
Lazarus: "Hey Geez, what up dog? You coming to the kegger this Friday? Last time you came to one, that keg lasted all night!"

I tend to think of it along the same lines as "freakin'" - an alternative for language that I don't use - I don't take the Lord's name in vain, and I do not usually swear, so these two words do get used, but not often -

Then again, I learned a few swears in German as a kid. heh heh heh.

Hope this is not over the line but I have to share the funniest swear I ever read. From one of Stephen King's short stories IIRC:
"Jesus jumped up Christ in a chariot driven sidecar!"
I still laugh when I see it. And of course, I've used it on a few occasions too. Beats a lot of other things I COULD have said.

I hadn't seen that whole sentence before.
I have heard Jumped up Jesus before.................
thanks all for answering. I was just curious as to what others thought because of an incident yesterday. I'm not devoutly religious, but I do have a relationship with God that I have to work on every day because I'm surely not the best of his flock. I'm human and fallible and definitely not the best that I can be. I screw up a lot. I go to church, but not every Sunday because honestly, it's too far to drive and sometimes we need to save the gas. That is just reality. Also, it's my husband's church and the family has been active in it for generations, sits on the board etc. not the church I grew up in. It's small and of course we've all known each other forever because that is reality in a small town also so it's not like I don't like the church or anything it's just different than what I grew up in, so don't think I'm hacking on this church because I'm not. I like it, it's just different than my past experience.
Yesterday my DD got the riot act read to her by her younger cousin because she said geez. Of course she has to run to me and ask me if it's a bad word. :eh: Our church never taught that it was. It was not considered blasphemous or out of line. It was considered along the lines of Golly Gee instead of being considered saying something along the lines of Jesus H. ****ing Christ which it seems to be considered in this church. I'm sure I'm pretty much the heathen in the family now for allowing her to say it. :D
I know it can be considered a shortened version of Jesus I just don't think most people use it that way or even read it to mean that.
Any more opinions are welcome as I am sure I'm going to have to defend my point at the next family dinner. :)

It is a substitute word with the same meaning & intent.
If you hold that, "Jesus" is an exclamatory word and "bad", then I would say, "geez" is as well.

Who's to say saying "Jesus!" is not just a more crass way of saying "Geez" though?
I grew up in a household and around people who did not ever say "Jesus!" in that manner and quite frankly it never crosses my mind to even use the name Jesus in vain like that....Jesus is not an exclamatory word in my vocabulary.....therefore I am not consciencely substituting anything.....
So confusing...

Uh...........no. read my other posts.
That is why I was taking this poll. There are those that are taught that, and I'm not going to say what they believe is wrong because that is what they are taught and believe. Apparently that includes the church I am currently going to although I've never heard it said before in any sermons or discussions. It looks like it was told to the children though since my nephew said that is what he has been taught.
I sat and thought about this a little and I guess what really bothers me is that a child younger than my daughter who is only 9 is lecturing her on how geez is a bad word when these same children are allowed to do and watch things far worse than that.
They aren't allowed to watch Harry Potter but they have watched all the LOTR movies. They can't watch certain movies because of language but they own and watch Transformers and have seen both movies. Movies that specifically talk about masturbation and have sexual references and innuendo in them. But somehow that's OK. :eh:
I'm guessing I'm having a problem with what I view as hypocrisy.

Ok... I apologize. I interpreted that statement as incredulity that none of us thought that Geez was blasphemous.
... And you are probably right about the hypocrisy... but then most of us rationalize subtle differences between various things that others do not detect, making us hypocrites in their eyes. It is unfortunate that their kids are parroting their parent's opinions to the detriment of your children, but don't be too harsh on the parents... they may have valid justification in their minds that differentiates between the issues, even though you do not understand it.

Don't worry, I love them all to death. There will be no harsh words or anything. I imagine it won't even be brought up although I've been wrong in that arena before. I just can't get around in my mind how they think it's OK for their boys to watch movies with overt sexual innuendo and mentions of masturbation but Oh My let's not say Geez.
I pick my battles and this is not one. I have taken my DD aside many times and explained that some things they do or believe are not going to be the same for our family and to respect that, but also know that we aren't going to hold her to their standards if they aren't around. Hope that makes sense.

Mencken said there are so few swear words in English that they should be use with care and discretion.
