Anyone know about this chain? I have heard that they have good prices. There is a job fair being held today and tomorrow and they plan to open 30 stores in the metroplex.
Just curious if they are any good.

Cheap and good. We've got them all over. Less election, many generics, but about half the cost of regular grocery store. I prefer Wegman's here to any other grocer, but ALDI's helps out the budget for sure.

Some people swear by them but I don't think their prices are all that different. The thing that is different about them is if you want a cart you have to rent one, you have to pay for each bag you put your groceries in, and you have to bag them yourself. That's how it was last time I was there. I think most of the stuff is OK but stay away from the meat dept., yuck. If you get a job there I think they pay decent.

They are good here in Illinois.
Except the nearest one is 20 miles away.
They do not have baggers at the check out, you do that yourself, they sell bags on site if you do not bring your own.
No baggers and no bags are two ways they have of lowering cost.
They do not take checks or credit cards.
That helps to keep costs down.
They take cash, bank debit cards, and Link Food Stamp cards from what I understand.
They have a mixture of top and lesser brand goods.
They don't have grocery cart handlers, you pay a quarter to release a cart from a rack and then take it back lock it back in place in the rack and get your quarter back.
Soon as you walk in the product selection begins on either side and it is warehouse style no frills merchandising.
They carry a limited supply of pre packaged meat, dairy cases, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables.
They have freezer cases where you can find some good bargains on frozen goods, I like their frozen turkeys.
We can really stock up on a ton of staples for a good price and it is not uncommon for us two have two overflowing carts and spend about $200 to $250 where it probably would have been over $400 here in town at the mom & pop grocers.
Like I said they are "no frills" and you do your own bagging.
I think you will like them.

Isn't that a German company? I think they opened a few in OKC awhile back, but I never went to one. I have an Aunt that likes them though.

All I know of ALDI is from when we were stationed in Germany. They were GREAT places to shop, we would always hit one before out Saturday afternoon drives over there. Yes you have to "rent" the cart but you get your coin back when you return the cart. Pay for the bags, yup but that's the norm in Germany they usually are cheap -you could always bring your own. We have on in our little town and we have been back her for almost 5 years but I haven't been in it yet...kinda odd now that I think about it.
Best thing to do is check one out and see if it is the place for you...maybe I'll take a cruse over there today and check out the one here.

Well about 10 years ago Food Lion came here and opened up tons of stores. They didn't last more than 2-3 years. We had another low-price chain called SuperOne about the same time. It was another bag-your-own store but the prices were pretty good. Most of them are gone too except for a few in smaller rural towns.
I wonder what neighborhoods they plan to open these stores. The places that really need low priced stores are places where businesses usually don't go because of the high crime. In the more affluent neighborhoods, nobody would be caught dead at a store where you had to bag your own - LOL.
I'll certainly check them out b/c I'm always up for saving money.

That is for their main website.Did some googling and it does look like they are going to venture into some less than desirable neighborhoods. Hope that works out. Also they are putting stores into some old Albertson's and SuperOne buildings. From what I can tell, they are about the size of the Walmart Neighborhood Markets.
There is one store planned for my city but I'll bet it's on the "other side of the tracks", so to speak. Now if they will open some Trader Joe's, everybody will be happy.

What's funny is here, I would have thought the same thing, but ALDI's has two stores in a very affluent area 14051. They are within 5 miles of some of the most expensive neighborhoods in Western NY, and those people shop there regularly.

Apparently a lot of other residents don't either b/c the parking lot at my Walmart location is filled with Mercedes, Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, and Cadillac cars.
I buy my meat at Tom Thumb, which is owned by Safeway and is kind of an upscale store, but even on the weekends they are rarely crowded. Safeway pulled out of Texas years ago because of a union dispute but later bought out Tom Thumb.
I'll shop anywhere I can save some bucks. I was just raised that way - waste not, want not.

Same here in Oklahoma wayoverthehill.
I believe it was in the late 70's. They replaced there stores with homeland, which followed along with the anti-union thing for years.
Haven't seen many of them around lately though.
About 10 miles from here, we have a small store, Judd's. The owner cracks me up. every year, he says he is going to close. I think he started this about 6 years ago.
going on into Chandler, they now have a super wal-mart (which is discontinuing my big vat o' Jerky) and an IGA store. Both are pretty good.
Of course, I also have the option of just walking outside, shooting a cow, and calling the butcher.
Same goes with my hog hunts.
All that being said, I wish the new stores the best, It's always nice to have competition for your shopping dollars.

We got an Aldi store about 2 miles away something like 20 years ago, they're very popular and I'd say they sold a lot of own brand stuff. More often than not these 'own brands' were as good as the more expensive name brands...

I like Aldi's. Great prices and reasonable quality.
It's funny how they try to make the labels look like the national brands.

My wife just went to our local Aldi for the first time a couple of weeks ago.
Her biggest complaints were that it was pretty basic food stuffs - don't go there with any "fancy" recipes and expect to find ingredients - and don't even expect to take your time and do things like read labels etc as the Aldi-heads will mow you down in the aisle.

Yes, they have great prices! A new Aldi's just came to my area and I buy most of my fresh fruits and vegetables there. Also, some frozen veggies and berries.

Seems like we're the last ones to get anything. sigh. Aldis has been around in Germany for at least 30 years. I think one of their competitors is Lidl, both of which are now also in Ireland. They were both great. Wish we'd get something like that out on the left coast. The good news is, we do have a Trader Joe's.

every time I went, the store 'smelled' like dead rotten meat----it was really baaddd.Oh jeez! I hate a store that smells. A new place called Market Street opened up here on April 1. It's half gourmet type stuff, ready made meals, etc. and half regular groceries. I checked it out one Sunday morning and it seemed OK but it was too crowded so I went back on a weekday morning to get some chuck roast on sale and the store smelled like dead (long dead) fish. I complained at the check out. I said the store was too new to be smelling that bad. I haven't been back since although they had some New York strip steaks on sale last week for $3.97#. Hated to miss out on that.

I have no idea what a Trader Joe's is?More upscale. Sort of like Central Market or Whole Foods. I never go to Whole Foods but I love Central Market. They have a bakery to die for and 600 different kinds of cheese.
Cheese is going to kill me one day.

This time it was to help one of my friends who needed someone to cover a shift while she and her husband went to an interview. She took a Sunday for me so I could have a 4 day weekend last month for our anniv. so I told her sure. Shes good people and would do just about anything for me so I felt like I could not turn her down. I have to admit that is one good thing about our store most of the people are more than willing to step up and help out when one of us has something important we have come up.

Most products from Aldi's are very good. Many are manufactured by the big names just with Aldi's label.
I prefer to shop at Aldi's and I recommend especially for families. You'll save a ton of money.

I would expect them to follow. They use the same distribution centers and with the Aldi's one opening in Jan 2010 it only makes sense. 25 stores isnt enough to distribute the expense of a half million sq ft DC, even if they added the 13 OK stores.
We have one coming here.

I dunno about that. We've had Trader Joes stores in Phoenix for at least 16 years that I know of and as near as I can tell, the closest Aldi's to me is in Hutchinson, Kansas. That's a bit off my beaten path.

I love Aldi's for certain things:
Bread
Grape Jelly
Red Bull (They call it Red Thunder)
Pasta
Pasta sauce
Ketchup
Brownie mix/frosting
Avoid:
Peanut butter. Tastes like paste.

Whole Foods only sells food that has a hole in it. Doughnuts, bagels, macaroni, swiss cheese, olives, Lifesavers, Cheerios, etc.
It's a niche, but they do quite well.

My mom and dad do a lot of shopping at Aldi's. I would like to, but I don't get over to the town where they are located very often. I usually do most of my shopping at Wal*Mart, since I can get most everything I need there at a good price and I am in that town at least 3 days a week.

Whole Foods I have heard the name but that is it.Central Market is where you go when you want something outrageously expensive or hard to find. They have every kind of produce imaginable, great meat, the aforementioned cheeses and to-die-for bakery, all sorts of deli meats, and prepared meals. Also a huge wine department. Wasted on me b/c all wine tastes like vinegar to me.
