Ireland (have ability to obtain Irish passport due to parentage/ancestry), then Australia.

Believe it or not, I suspect I would prefer Aussieland even though Ireland is the land of my ancestry.

Ireland is very very expensive, not to mention cold damp and dreary more often than not. I have SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and need sunshine to function properly. Not sure Ireland would offer enough sunshine to sustain me--especially in winter.

On the other hand, Australia gets more than its fair share of sunshine and I suspect I would do quite well there--even in winter.

Probably Europe somewhere, but I'd really love to live in Coastal Central America or South America. Grenada would work pretty well too, as my Sis in Law has extended family all around there. They treat my brother like a king when they visit. Wouldn't rule out pacific islands either.

I am a Texan living in Switzerland. It is very beautiful and a nice place to live. I've met many foreigner and they all have varying opinions. A single Brazilian man was relieved when he was moving back home, he found Zurich city life too boring. A woman moving back to North Dakota was afraid they would find it too boring after living in Zurich. I found that amusing.

I think I prefer Swiss life to French. France seems to be more warm and social, with more of a village square, music and mingling feeling in old town centers. The Swiss seem to be very focused on hard work and life quality in all aspects. Since we already have a network of friends and a large family ourselves, I don't feel the social difference too much.

Foreigners to new countries typically struggle not just with the language, but major cultural differences which may not be obvious. Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy are close but they are each different culturally speaking. So I believe I would have to live in a country first before deciding to stay there permanently.

Switzerland, but only after I've gotten a job secured first =P

Bad news: Typically foreigners are given jobs in Switzerland only if their is a demonstrated lack of local candidates.

Good news: If you do get a job here, it's likely it will pay much more than you would expect because of greater demand. Our Swiss job pays roughly double, if not more.

It seems like damn near everything that moves in Australia is poisonous. On the other hand, the most "dangerous" critter in New Zealand is those little sand flies... so small they can wriggle through mosquito netting, but with a bite that can raise a welt and itches like hell. Second would be feral pigs, but they are not nearly as frequently encountered than the biting flies (I spent weeks in the back country in their area and never saw one.) Third (not a critter) would be hook grass... pulls the hair right out of your legs.

You asked what someone would be able to confiscate if they invaded / took over New Zealand (my original statement was that they were fortunate no one had bothered to do so). If they were taken over, they stand to lose their 40 million sheep and ownership of some of the most beautiful landscape in the world.

Sorry if that wasn't clear, I thought my meaning was self-evident...

What does not confiscating sheep have to do with remaining a free country? :eh:

"Confiscate" = "take away" - as in an invader taking over their country, which was fairly common for small countries until the last century or so.

But I agree about the landscapes... I have spent over four months in NZ and have set foot on nearly every area of the country except the far tips of the east and west coasts of N. Island.

Family friends of ours, two of the nicest people anyone could know, tried to emigrate from Oregon to NZ. He was a commercial pilot and his wife was a New Zealander. She was a former flight attendant; they met in SE Asia when he was flying for Air America and she with Air New Zealand. They moved to Queenstown...one of my favorite places in NZ... where her family lived.

After a year they moved back to Oregon. During that year in NZ they experienced continuous subtle discrimination and backbiting by the locals (because he was a Yank) all the while that everybody was nice to their faces. He was very disappointed; she was shocked. As I said earlier... NZ is a very nice place to visit, but they do not want you to live there.

I have plenty of friends there, and the summers are beautiful... unfortunately, the winters are horrible and they have no clue how to deal with more than three inches of snow.

Second guess would be Denmark (Copenhagen)... an absolutely beautiful city that I adored. Plus, it's a 30 minute train ride to Malmo, Sweeden. I tell ya, when the time comes for me to go, I'm going to go there to die.

New Zealand is an extremely friendly country to visit, but once you emigrate it is another story. And it is not just we Yanks. Australia has a lot of votes in my thread.

Anyone here from Australia? Why is it so good there. Also, what's the gold coast of Australia.

I can't tell you why it is so good there... I don't think it is.

But the Gold Coast is a ritzy stretch of tourist beach south of Brisbane centered on Surfers Paradise. Its kind of like Miami Beach, Waikiki, or Copacabana. There is nothing "gold" about it, except perhaps for the tans and the contents of the tourists pockets.

Definitely Ireland! Beauty and wonderful drinks!!

But if one is not inebriated or hung over, or a member of the IRA, how is it?

I wanna travel, but would never live or settle down anywhere else.

2 coastlines, so many climates / terrains, beautiful geography, natural resources, rich history, the highest diversity in the world, we educate every citizen, the best medicine around, security, a solid constitution, history's greatest military, the birthplace of most modern tech advances, freedom of speech, freedom to worship, free elections, the most culturally influential, the strongest trade...

why live anywhere else? I'm telling you, this is the Promised Land.

Yes, the America you describe WAS a wonderful place. However, it allowed too much freedom to those who were fearful of freedom, fearful of personal responsibility, and in denial of God. As a consequence, a war is being waged against the natural Law of Karma, and America is fast becoming a third-world country thanks to King Obama and his delusional thinking.

I'm not criticising southerners, one of my best mates is a cockney but I haven't felt the need to venture south of Watford for a long time...;)...

Actually I don't think I've been south of Stockport for a while...........:))............

Well we've got a good airport so I can fly anywhere in the world without going down south, actually I tell a lie....

I've just remembered, I was changing planes in Philadelphia and the plane was overbooked to Manchester so I gave up my seat and went to London (there was still plenty of seats on that flight) and got a free return flight anywhere in the world as a result...

Now that is the only time since 1991 that I've ventured down south........:D.........

That's what everyone told my friend too... "Come on down... we have a job lined up for you and everything..."

New Zealand is an extremely friendly country to visit, but once you emigrate it is another story. And it is not just we Yanks. I met a Canadian guy... owned a sporting goods store in Auckland... he had been there for 15 years and told me they still treated him like an outsider. Sort of like people moving to New England... they never quite fit in.

Ah, gotcha. Well, isn't that really true everywhere? I've been in Atlanta over 15 years, and those who grew up here still ask, "Where are you from?"

Course, it might be because of my somewhat unusual combination of accent snippets haphazardly assembled growing up in various places....

Not where I live... True you may never be accepted, but most people are and many become "locals" within a few years... even months in some cases. It all depends on your values and your attitude. Where are you from is still a common question, but it is asked with the assumption that everybody is from somewhere else. Surprise is often the reaction when you say "I was born here."

I was invited, and would have had a job the moment I landed in Napier. I dunno what it is really like as I have never been there, so who knows? You are probably right. Then again, you could find that here as well, and in the next town over, the people could be totally sincere.
