This is one issue I really don't keep up with, I know its all about unions and such but what exactly is it and which sides are taking which stance?

no secret ballots for people that want a union in their place of work.

if you vote against unionizing you will be targeted by the union.

And if you vote for it you will be targeted by the company.

It's a bad thing all around

Political payback for the support from unions in the election, so unions can stuff their coffers with even more of rank and file monies. Then the union heads represent rank and file so well as they did during the election, urging members to support the o knowing full well that many union members would be impacted negatively by the o's policies he wishes to put in place.

I don't understand this still . . . . why can't a union worker working in say, a grocery store, go to the polls on election day, and vote privately? Why is he/she forced to vote somewhere where the union heads can see his/her vote? How can they tell a private citizen that he/she cannot go to the polls - it's our right? This infuriates me, but I want to make sure I have all the facts straight.

not voting in elections, like for president, but voting for the union to come into the grocery store and unionize it.

Card Check is just another reason why you're better off not being in a union.

Which means they can trash your car, house etc. Go after your wife and kids and stuff like that because they know who you are.

Card check only applies to forming a union, or unionizing (joining an existing union) a workplace.

Say you work at Walmart. If card check passes, then a couple of guys representing a union could come to your workplace, and talk about the benefits of union with you. If at that time you agree with them, you sign your name to their list. When they get 50% + 1 people to sign that paper, all those people have just agreed to join the union, and the union then negotiates on your behalf with Walmart with regards to your salary and other benefits.

Benefits: Easier to form a union, no cost to setup a secret ballot.
Problems: Your vote is known. If you choose not to sign, the people who wanted you to sign KNOW you didn't want to sign. This might lead to "enforcers" who "encourage" you to vote by "explaining the downside" of voting the wrong way.

Hopefully that makes clearer. What could go wrong? Nothing in a perfect world. If we lived in a perfect world, why do we have secret ballots for government elections?
