We all know it, and even a family pet can really get to you.
I just got back from the vets office to have my Moms dog put to sleep, I stayed with her until she was gone. She just never could really get up this morning and was really looking pretty bad even though she had been doing good for her age.
The vet said he thought she may have had cancer and because of her age it was just time. We didnt know how old she was for sure because I found her on a ranch but I would guess she was around 2 or 3 when I found her and lived to be 16-17. I didnt want a dog so I gave it to my Mom and Dad. She immediately became my Dads dog or to be more accurate my Dad became her human.
Pretty funny, I found our first family dog on a ranch at the age of 5, it just ran right up to me out of the blue. The last family dog we had I found on a ranch, it just ran right up to me out of the blue.
My Dad died 5 years ago and My Mom said all we had left of him was the dog, kinda true.
My Mom has Multiple Sclerosis(Diagnosed '75) and in her case it has progressed very slow compared to most people, but traumatic events in her life seem to have made the disease progress in steps with each event, the last event/progression was my Dad dying.
Not looking for sympathy I just had to say today was not a good day, and life just sucks sometimes!

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Coming from a family that had a literal menagerie of pets at all times, I know how hard it is to lose them.
You did the right thing for your dog, and I wish your mother as much strength as she needs.

Awe, I'm sorry about your Mom and your ranch dog. You were a trooper taking the dog in and staying with her until she past away. When my Mom died, I took her little dog home and I've spent many nights crying my self to sleep with that little dog. She's all I got left too so I understand how your Mom feels.

Thanks everyone, I offered to take Mom to a kennel and look for a puppy and I got a big NO!
I will offer again in a week or two and I bet I get a different answer.

I'm so sorry to hear about what you had to do today. It's so painful to lose a dog, especially as you sit next to them as they are being put to sleep. I had to do that with one of my dogs many years ago. She actually licked my tears away as the vet injected the medicine.
It takes awhile to get over the loss of a dog so it's probably a good idea to wait awhile before you bring up the idea to your mom. I hope this doesn't cause a progression with the MS. Please let her know she and you are in our prayers and thoughts.
There are days that life really does suck and it sounds like you've just had one.

Sorry to hear that.
I care for a lot of critters. (see photo album) I've lost count on how many I've had to put down over the years. It never gets easier, but part of caring for them also means helping them die a humane death sometimes.
You're to be commended for staying with him through the process. Many people can't bear being that involved.

Rainbows Bridge is a memorial site for your beloved pet to enter and roam free.
http://www.rainbowbridge.com/Poem.htm
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
